I remember seeing this when it was first broadcast on Dr Who. Pity the clip ends before the Doctor's comment at the end of the TOTP clip. He said: "I didn't know they played classical music." Eee lad, it were good growing up the 1960s.
Lennon hits a Bminor on: Ri-hi-hide at 0:41?? If you listen carefully,George must be playing a variation(s) of it. Are there any Beatles cover musicians who know the exact chord(s)sequence on that part?
To all the people who keep saying this is not from top of the pops; the insert is; and this was used by Doctor Who and then the beeb wiped it. It's not in the totp studio; it was a specially filmed insert for totp. Yes that's different from 66 when the lads appeared in the totp studio to do Paperback Writer/Rain.
@sebas71 It was a clip from TOTP that was latter put in an episode of Doctor Who. Because that episode of TOTP has since been wiped by then BBC, that clip on that Dr. Who episode is all that remands of The Beatles performance.
Some of the two best things in the world doctor who and the beatles I wish I were British then I could be part of a place were great people and great things have happened sigh .....
That is the way it was done, back in the day. It was a rare thing, for musicians to play live on any program. They had to be on shows like Ed Sullivan, to actually play live music. And even then, it didn't always happen.
No, it's not out on DVD yet but it was released on VHS video along with the 1988 story 'Rememberence Of The Daleks' back in 1993 and they both came in a fantastic collectable silver Dalek tin. I've since heard that it is now likely that 'The Beatles' clip will appear on a future digitally remastered and restored UK DVD release. But there may be copywrite issues for the rest of the world though?
It's now available on DVD, but you'll have to buy the British/European Region 2 version to see The Beatles clip. It has been cut from American copies.
It's called 'The Chase' (although each episode had it's own title back then) and it's a 1965 story starring William Hartnell as the 1st Doctor and it also features the Daleks too. I've heard a rumour that when it gets released on DVD some time in the future, they may have a copywrite problem and so that Beatles clip may have to be removed? Pathetic really since that clip wouldn't exist had that Doctor Who story not been discovered and saved.
Thank You Doctor Who for tuning to BBC-1 to see this segment of the Beatles on Top Of The Pops, the onl;y known footage to exist from this show.Had this show not been discovered in 1978, we would of never had the chance to see even this footage. Many Thanks for posting this classic footage, only wish more existed out there somewhere ?
We should think ourselves lucky that the BBC didn't decide to junk this episode of Dr Who too - of which they destroyed many legendary episodes - otherwise we'd have nothing.

I seem to remember the Beatles being on TOTP and performing behind perspex to keep the fans away from them. Anyone else remember this?

Well the good news is this Doctor Who story is now available on DVD and The Beatles clip is included. Or at least it is on European copies only.
