I only knew before that all these terms refer to forward, rear wheels drive .. never knew about the engine thing and the weight distribution and all these info !! Great video !! thanks a lot !
@MN12BIRD they still consider it FR for some reason, thats why theres no 50/50 weight distribution MRthey are all rear bias. Like the new LFA, its rear heavy but the engine is in front, its still considered a FR but you can argue its MR in terms of weight
It's actually pretty common for FR cars to have the engine mostly behind the front axle. It's good positioning. However, traditionally only cars with the engine behind the driver are labeled as MR.
I don't know the history but I bet the term "mid-engine" was invented after somebody started putting rear engines further forward, and wanted a way to advertise it distinctly from RR layouts.
I find it a more artificial marketing term than the others.
Dear God please tell me no one actually makes an RF? Why the hell would you want the engine in the back and then front wheel drive with no weight over the front wheels?? MF would make no sense either. Unless its for some specialty car like I dunno something like a boatcar or something. Front wheel drive is bad enough but the one thing its got is the engines weight over the wheels. If you put the engine in the back why would you add more work (drive shaft) to have the power go to the front?
@MN12BIRD There was an early VW that uses the bug chasi and engine but with another body that used a diferential to make it FWD but with the Rear engine.
I have it chasi with the diferential system on a book of old VW mechanicals, but i dont know the name of this VW car and where it was made
Very informative. I was trying to find out what these initials meant, and Google sent me here. Thanks! You should have your own cable tv segment, like on Top Gear. Your trademark personality gimmick could be your distracting pen clicking.
Reminds me of the Smart car. Well not the car itself but the fact you can say "I drive a rear engine, rear wheel drive Mercedes." but its really only a Smart car lol.
Yeah lol it is. Not exactly as sporty as most RR's but it was one of the first economy cars to use a transverse engine with trans axle before they started making FF cars. Funny thing is Hitler ordered Porsche to build them under the new name "Volks Wagon" witch means "The Peoples Car" it was designed to be easy, simple and reliable.
u know with the DCCD the subaru's have they can imitate ff or fr driver trains,by shifting some of the torque to the back wheels or front wheels, but that doesnt make them into real ff or fr, awd are awsome!!!
Some might say nothing but I usually refer to trucks and offroad vehicles as 4WD. Cars designed for blitzing the track, cars with electronic diffs and other such technology I would call "AWD" ie I wouldn't call an WRX STi or Evo 4WD I would say AWD. But I mean... kinda the same thing anyway!

Isn't the s2000 considered a mid engine layout since the engine is placed behind from front axel? i could be wrong.
kippo 1 year ago
@kippo Yeah I've seen some front engine cars with the engine so far back behind the front axel line that you can consider it mid engine.

i never heard it called that. i hear FWD,RWD,AWD,4WD
james42519 3 years ago
Yeah thats just more basic. RWD doesn't tell you if the engine is in the front or back like FR, MR, RR does for example.

The world's cheapest car is a RR with a back seat ..
Take a look at Tata Nano .. No more praise than this though .

Yep. Some people take the front diffs out of Evos to make the Rear Wheel Drive. the Evo in Tokyo Drive was converted to RWD.
