it is a feeler stick. you put it in the hole. if you hit something and it moves or bites the stick then there is probably a fish in it. then you grab it and make dinner

@SefMags Tickler stick, feeler stick, pull rod, etc. It is used to find if fish are in hole out of hands reach.
