The golf gods were smiling on Jack that day. It's impossible to describe the electrifying feeling that washed over those of us who witnessed Nicklaus pull one last, great victory out of his club bag. On that day, and in that place, Augusta National, Jack Nicklaus cemented his place as the greatest golfer the world has ever known.
Keep into account...the equipment they were using back then. was vastly different.
Jack Nicklaus, like everyone else, was using Persimmon Woods, and "wound" 3-piece golf balls.
46, back then, was considered to be an advanced age. Up until then, Mr. Nicklaus had not won a PGA Tour Event in 3 years.....he hadn't won a Major in 5 years, which is why so many of the critics and writers had written him off..
I watch these clips...and they still give me a chill. Seeing everything unfold the way it did....and with his son, Jackie on the bag....[sigh]...I can sum it all up in one word.....
Seve Ballesteros had lost his father recently in 1986, and he wanted to dedicate the masters victory to his late father, that´s why he was so eager and sad after the public reaction, applauding a mistake. This sport is for gentlemen.
I turned 46 this year and had a moment like this. I haven't played steady golf in the last 12 years but when I did I was 6 handycap. I was playing some old friends this past summer and was down by 6 after the12th. I ended up birding 3 of the last 6 holes and shot 38 after posting a 46 on the front. I remembered this match while going thru the last 6 holes. Thanks for the memories Jack, you are truly an inspiration and a true American icon.
@chilibro Jack Nicklaus is the greatest golfer ever. At this stage he is 46 years old and many believe that he is through and can't do it anymore. But on the 4th Round of the Masters. he makes a charge on the back nine to win the Masters and becoming the oldest player to do so.
@chilibro In a word; yes. It probably won't mean much to you when you're 45 either, because you didn't see it. But for those of us who were watching that Sunday afternoon, it's a perfect example of why we all watch sports. A great old champion who'd been written off making one last fantastic effort to remind us of the great champion we grew up with. I hope some day something similar happens for you; only then will you understand the feeling.
I will never forget watching this live, and I taped it. Jack was always my favorite. It's not just the greatest golf tournament I've ever seen, it's the greatest sporting event I've ever seen. 1980 U.S. hockey team beating russia and then going on to win the gold is a very, very close second. Even if I could'nt watch it again from time to time, which I do, I could never forget that day.
"Yes, sir!" Jack's stirring win at Augusta is an inspiration to anyone told "you can't do it." He made everyone eat their words and excelled as the pressure rose while the other golfers wilted.
@rob3377 Yes, sir - you are right. And it is very inspiring to watch over and over again..reminds you why one should never give up..and why golf is such a great game. It is not about money, it is about passion for the sport or anything you do in life..something lacking today, perhaps because big money has taken over..
Thanks for Posting !!! Just saw the special on the 1986 Masters 25th anniversary on this year's Masters eve. The back nine of the 1986 Masters, Nicklaus was money. The field he played against his whole career, as well as that day at Augusta was SICK .
My favorite golf tournament. I'll never forget watching it live. Ben Wright's call on Seve on 15. " Oh he's hooked it, he's pull hooked it, that ball's destined for the water".. There will never be another Jack. He won so many times, but the times he lost, he always put the focus on the guy who beat him. That's why he's the best there's ever been. Thanks for posting!!
One for the ages..Two sporting events immediately come to mind when one is asked to recall the greatest moments in sports: Lake Placid 1980 USA vs USSR and this one...Jack tops them all

Jack is great but the american public is nasty.
Seve Ballesteros had lost his father recently in 1986, and he wanted to dedicate the masters victory to his late father, that´s why he was so eager and sad after the public reaction, applauding a mistake. This sport is for gentlemen.
