  • @qommoq Getting a high score on guitar hero doesn't make you a rock star or authority on tone... punk A. In fact it also limits your creditablity on tube amps, guitar tone, or anything related. Do you even know what a mesa boogie is? Do you even know what tone is? Keep going to guitar center and buying every new digital gimmick they come up with to sell to people like you who think they can just turn a knob and get tone. It's in the hands, it's in the soul, and it's in the glow of tubes.

  • Retired the Mark IIB? What're you playing, now?

  • Hi mate, great sound:) I'm a recent Mark IIB owner and was just wondering what settings you use for this? Really nice....

  • Don't remember bro, made this vid 2 years ago / Mark II has been retired since.

    Keep Rockin!

  • Believe me, I've read everything there is to be read on those (and similar MKs) on the net. I was asking for your personal opinion...

  • I see, well back in the early 80's I had a friend who had a Mark Ia. I thought it was the greatest amp ever (at the time). As of late, Guitar Center, had one. The clean was very nice/smooth/tight. The distortion did not have the gain that i personally like. You could probably kick that up with your pedals and get a good sound.

    Good Luck

  • Τhanks a lot! I am mainly looking for cleans, anyway. And with the small budget that I have, if I get it, it's gonna be my first Boogie. There is another question but if I get it (I really hope so), I will direct it to the Mesa technical support. But anyway, here goes: that particular MK IIa doesn't have an effects loop, but a slave in and slave out instead (a proper eff. loop was introduced at MK IIb). Do you think it might damage pedals if I use it as an effects loop?

  • I "think" the slave in/out inputs are for an additional amp head.

On my Mark II that's what the slave was intend for. I'm not sure about the Mark I. I'd check with Mesa before you plug any of your pedals in. In the mean time, run them in front of the amp.

    Rock on man!

  • Well being that this comment was made 7 months ago you probably already have your answer. Here it goes anyway though. A slave out as an effects loop (although line level) is still WAY to hot to put into a pedals input and would most likely overload the processor in the effect. The slave out comes straight from the output tranny.

  • Indeed, I know the answer by now, but in any case I would like to thank you for your info. The effects loop on the MKIIa is not really an effects loop as we know it, but it can be converted easily to one with proper levels for pedals... it is a very handy mod that my technician has done.

So in this case, there can't be a true claim for the MKIIa to be the first amp in history with an eff. loop, but it surely is the first with a footswitchable second channel! :-)

  • Would you say that a MKIIa is very different from this in terms of cleans? I am mostly interested in those (and with a large headroom) since I am playing with pedals, but your general opinion about MKIIa units (including their distortion) would be nice...

  • mesa burr

  • yes

  • Thank you very much for your answer. I think i will go for something else then :)

Maybe I'll find a used Mark IIc+ one day ^^

  • Have any opinion on how this is for metal? :) Is the distortion much different than the IIC?

    Nice playing by the way!

  • If you're going to play metal this is not the amp for you. This amp does not have the gain you will need to accomplish a metal sound. Unless, you kick up with a pedal/overdrive.

Yes, this amp does was made before the "c".

    Rock on! Good Luck

  • To be honest, I think most of your tone is from your fingers - not the boogie. Very nice. I used to have that exact amp.

  • Thank you very much appreciate for your cool comment.

  • @jeffhamula You idiot, the tone is the gear, not fingers !!!!

  • @qommoq mofo, you aint got a clue what you're saying. have you ever played a guitar?

  • @jeffhamula dipstick, I know exactly what Im saying. Unfortunately you dont, and is why you are so laughable. tone in the fingers....bwaa ha ha ha ha dipshit!

  • I fancy a Mesa Boogie,Dave,but they're a bit out my price range!

  • Don't feel bad, i've owned this one for a number of years. Fire up that slide bro!

  • Great great bluesy tone and licks Brother!! Drive on in main!

  • Thanks bro! you are too kind main!

  • Thanks bro!!

  • I own the same amp. What tubes are you using? Do you have a simulclass or is it the 60/100 watt model? Thanks-

  • No simulclass - 60w

Boogie tubes 6L6's - A7's - amp into a gt8 with compression and reverb - helps the sound quite a bit. Thanks bro!

  • THANK YOU!! I've been looking for this sound and Now my Amp search has ended! Very Nice Playing!

  • Thanks for your cool comment and congrats!

  • Wooaaaa nice! Just the right amount of BITE!!

    Great pickin too main!

  • Thank you Jerry!

  • Wow, that blues solo sounds like the ''another brick in the wall'' solo by Pink Floyd

  • Hey thanks I am extremely gracious of your cool comment.. :)

  • Dave,

Cole's been listening to David Gilmour lately so he has an affinity for same. The above comment came from him and is a huge compliment. He really likes your guitar work! You have great "feel" when you play.

    GOD BLESS!

    Tim

  • Wow thats awesome! The honor is mine !

    Thanks so much!

  • In Fact, you can see a Mesa Mark I in Gilmour's rig for that album and tour.

  • Wow, how cool is that man!

  • Heck yeah.....!

  • That right! yeah!!

  • Hmm, put this amp in a trap case a while back, but you have work w/the volume and master volume of the distortion channel at around 4 on each. Lots of highs. Eq was not used.

    There is some reverb.

  • what are your settings? very nice!

  • got to love a boogie!!!!!

  • Yup, I love the amp, but its being retired.

Just pick up a Roadster Dual Rec w/a 2x12 cab. Ripping distortion, shimmering cleans.

    Thanks!

  • I've got a Mesa Maverick, and have decided that EL84 amps are not my thing. Your tone is exactly what I'm going for. What Mark series amp is it? Mark II, III? I know it's not a Mark IV, obviously. Thanks.

  • This amp is a Mark IIB - you may want to try a Lone Star which is very nice texas bluesy type amp.

Thanks for the comment -glad you liked my amp from back in the day.

  • The Lone Stars (both the Lone Star and Lone Star Special) are very cool amps and easy to set up. The new Express and the now discontinued F Series were also nice.

To my ears the F sounds more like an older Mk series while the Lone Stars sound like a really hot rodded Fender but in a good way.

  • Cool, I havent checked out the F series or the Special yet. But I will.

    Cheers bro!

  • original owner?

  • Yup, ordered it back in like 1980ish

  • No thank you!

  • Like it a lot!

  • Thanks, blues are my roots..

  • very cool!!!

  • Thanks alot!

  • Very hot tone dude...is that your Paul you are playing? real nice!

  • Hi Dave, yes thats the wine colored LP.

  • Oh dude that is sweet. I liked your picking style too, nice and twangy.

  • Thanks my brother - you're playing is ripping!!

    Gotta SG too..

  • how much does an amp like this usually run for?

  • Depending on the condition any where from $450 to $1050ish. Ebay has a few.

  • I've never been much of a boogie fan, but i've got to say im very impressed. Personally i went for a line 6 but i really like the tone on this amp.

  • Thanks bought it back in the 80's
