This is definitely a bad hit...but as is the case with so many bad hits the player playing the puck sees him coming and then turns his back to him. What is the opposing player to do? Let up? Im not defending the hit but it seems like this happens a lot. Someone is obviously lined up to hit you and you turn your back to them and lean down to play the puck.........

We all understand that through the emotion of a game situation we all make quick decisions, Van Ryn looked up to gauge the play and went to play the puck. Kostopoulus, being on the energy line made the decision to come up for the hit. It was a snap decision, and I must admit it's hard when you're in the heat of the game. Either way, you see the number, you have to let up and play the puck.

Anyone who blames the victim is an idiot! It is up to the person delivering the hit to ensure that he is not seriously injuring his opponent. The three game suspension is a joke and does not due anything to deter this type of behaviour. If you want to stop this put penalties against the offending teams salary cap and have the offender out as long as the victim. A combination of coslty suspension and hurting his own team is the only way to stop this behaviour.

I just looked at the rule book and made my own judgment, I have reffed in the AHL for quite a while now and I would have called a double minor (4 mins) one for roughing and one for boarding, The NHL is really fast and you can't say that Kostopoulos had time to stop or turn.. and that speed you commit to a hit and sadly enough, Van Ryn didn't go where Kostopoulos expected him to go... not blaming anyone here

The speed of the NHL is tremendous, at that speed it is very hard to stop, turn, especially when you have no idea where the other player is going... plus look at Kostopoulos reaction after the hit... he clearly felt terrible

Van Ryn had to go for the puck & he knew the hit was coming(he's a d-man doing his job). They are both 6 ft & weigh around 200 lbs. Kostopolous job could have let him pin Ryn or hit lower on the body (they are the same size) but being the Goon that Kost is he crushed Ryn's face into the glass. Im a solid Vancouver fan and I hate the Leafs, but that was a brutal hit plain and simple. Thanks for the post man! And to the otherssay something useful, otherwise its a waste of my time reading it!
