this aria was put in the key of Bb for a reason known by mozart alone. if you cant sing it in the same key...for me personally it ruins the song. but i love her acting.

She's not hiding behind all the accented consonants, it's called diction and using it to her advantage in her interpretation...it goes to show u can use the Italianate legato line in conjunction with some finely tuned, musical consonants always at the tip of your tongue, and use it in a theatrical fashion without taking away from the style and your smooth legato throughout!

I would agree that vocally she's not the best, but she was a very believable Cherubino! I was drawn in with the combination of voice and acting, which is all you can really ever ask for from a singer: to be drawn in.

Wonderful, povero Cherubin. Wonderfully acted, gorgeous vocalist, lovely tone, rings very nicely. Nice ornaments! Singing a few quarters as eighths, but I'm nit-picking. An all-around fabulous mezzo.

I'm not impressed with the Susanna in other videos- cute acting, but she's singing it far too straight-toned for a Mozart lyric role.

Non potrei essere più d'accordo. Pare anche a me che sacro e intoccabile non abbiano nulla a che fare con tutto ciò. Mi riferivo esattamente all'immaginario: pur essendo una donna, canta nelle vesti di un ragazzino; io non ci trovo niente di lesbo, a meno che ci si rifiuti di guardare gli attori per la parte che interpretano, cosa che a me non riesce perché mi sento sempre partecipe della vicenda.

non mi sembra affatto impeccabile, colpa e merito della registrazione in scena, ma mi pare una ottima attrice; il suo è un cherubino un po'patetico e un po' arrabbiato, giustamente frenetico, ma devo ammettere di preferirne altri... la voce ovviamente da non mettere in discussione :)

A superbly acted Cherubino, full of energy and mischief. In terms of acting I think Pamela Helen Stephen is absolutely perfect, when it comes to the voice though, perhaps von Stade has a better tone quality overall.

Also the Susanna acting was really getting on my nerves, she wasn't convincing at all in whatever she was trying to do, a bit distraction and not very professional looking.

Still a most excellent performance by Stephen.

This is definitely the best ACTING of Cherubino I've seen. She looks just how I think Cherubino should look - boyish, naughty, energetic, excited, with a spark in the eye. Others usually seem "heavier", but she's so light - she moves like a teenage boy =) And her voice is very good too.
