We WERE in severe water restrictions in Australia and adapted to it. Why have water restrictions been lifted? we were living well with reasonably severe water restrictions, why should this stop because it's raining again? this is why there is a need for the advancement of desalinization of sea water to supply water to dry areas...if large scale desalinization were put into service around the world the Australian desert, the Middle East, Chinese deserts, the US SW and Sahara could be turned into green zones..it could help to reduce the increase in sea levels if u remove water out of the ocean and use it to irrigate the land and replenish the water tables

I've been thinking that exact same thing for years - if all the population of Australia lives on the coasts, why not just carve a bloody great channel down the middle of the nation and have everyone living along THAT coast as well? It makes even more sense if you take the Great Dividing Range into consideration with rising water levels and such.
well, I love that idea. Dig a channel about 1/4 of a km across about ever 300km north to south to give the interrior access to water and rain fall would probably increase as well. Before I was thinking about 30-100 fusion power plants to produce enough fresh water to pump in tunnels so that they could flow back out irrigation ditches into rivers back into the ocean.
It really wouldn't be that monumental a task as it sounds. It wouldn't have to be the size of the Amazon, just big enough to create a few more canals in case the population increases.
problem with that idea is that you would have brackish water seeping into the water table near the channels from the disturbed bedrock. Gar stuck with my original idea. Building desalination plants powered by dueterium fusion plants that pump water inland via a tunnel and then lets it flow back out from the center of the continent.

Hmmm well this is partly true. Although I dont remember any evacuation plea, the River Murray is almost dry and they have cut water to agricultral areas. Those in remote areas without their own water supply have been leaving their land due to lack of water. They are leaving by choice though and not because of any evacuation plan. Atm its Winter here in Australia and so far had hardly any rain, plenty of clouds and its cold like winter, but definitely not enough rain :o\

I've been thinking that exact same thing for years - if all the population of Australia lives on the coasts, why not just carve a bloody great channel down the middle of the nation and have everyone living along THAT coast as well? It makes even more sense if you take the Great Dividing Range into consideration with rising water levels and such.

well, I love that idea. Dig a channel about 1/4 of a km across about ever 300km north to south to give the interrior access to water and rain fall would probably increase as well. Before I was thinking about 30-100 fusion power plants to produce enough fresh water to pump in tunnels so that they could flow back out irrigation ditches into rivers back into the ocean.

problem with that idea is that you would have brackish water seeping into the water table near the channels from the disturbed bedrock. Gar stuck with my original idea. Building desalination plants powered by dueterium fusion plants that pump water inland via a tunnel and then lets it flow back out from the center of the continent.

This came in on 5/5/07 does anyone have the update on what happened? It's almost 2009. Evacuating on basis of no water is really strange because I've seen people live on boats and shower is mostly a swim in the ocean, food is fish. They don't need much desalinated water.

would help the artesian basin if the eastern states didnt rape the rivers before they got to sa.If u look at the murray and darling up stream they both have water , and people still irrigate.

Hmmm well this is partly true. Although I dont remember any evacuation plea, the River Murray is almost dry and they have cut water to agricultral areas. Those in remote areas without their own water supply have been leaving their land due to lack of water. They are leaving by choice though and not because of any evacuation plan. Atm its Winter here in Australia and so far had hardly any rain, plenty of clouds and its cold like winter, but definitely not enough rain :o\

Problem not solved, numb nuts. Desal takes a huge amount of electricity... The only current feasible way of operating Desal plants is through Nuclear power, but where do the spent rods go?? Do we want reactors in our country?? Desal, with our current power arrangements, is going to add to the pollution problems Australia faces, which in turn add to this drought we experience. Renewable Energy is the answer for Aus, 2 thrids of our bloody country is desert, but try telling that to the coal lobby.
