People are able to survive there because it is big enough to grow crops (mushrooms) and farm animals (pigs and chickens) to survive. Since America doesn't have such a bomb shelter, its presumed to be gone. Thats the metro 2033 nerd in me :)

The environment in Fallout is designed beautifully. It does look like shit went down town. It doesn't feel however, like shit did go down. When I played through Fallout, I just couldn't get pulled into the post apocalyptic setting of the game. This being compared to Metro, which hooked me and pulled me in from the very beginning. Would RPG elements and sandbox mode make Metro feel the same way Fallout did to me? Maybe, but I still think it would work wonderfully if it was done in moderation.

This being said however, despite differences they are both fun as hell =p. I think we can all agree however, that if metro had RPG elements to it and went sandbox mode (provided the story wasn't affected) it would be the better post apocalyptic shooter.

In my opinion, Metro 2033 cannot be compared to Fallout 3, because both are different genres. Fallout 3 offers in-depth gameplay and lots of details, but Metro 2033 is probably one of the best horror FPS I have ever played. I loved the atmosphere and loved it even more after reading the books. I cannot wait for its sequel to come out and hopefully this time my machine will be able to run it at least in high settings with DX 11 enabled... :P
