  • Oh, well shes pretty, I don't think she'll need the HD cam after all.

  • First of all I'd like to say, you are very beautiful.. I just wanted to make sure, the footage in this clip was filmed on a canon GL 2 /xm2 ? cos I'm about to buy one and the footage on your clip is great ... could you cornfirm please ..Thanks gorgeous

  • weird eye brows...

  • yeah that sony mic sounded muffled

  • Thanks, your test helped me decide on the direction I am going with my own shooting, and thanks for the information on the accessories as well. I am starting to shoot interviews and informational videos for The Hemp Revolution. You can find them on youtube at HempRevMag. Thanks again.

  • I guess buying both would be the best of both worlds. The azden and lavalier both sound equally good. I think it just comes down to what it is you're actually filming. Solid test vid, thanks.

  • Thanks! really helpful. I'm trying to upgrade my gl2's audio, I don't even have a wind cover for the mic right now

  • ironically, I think I like the built-in Canon GL2 mike the best. I have a Canon GL2 mike and I've always wanted to here the different mike set-ups side by side. Thanks for the upload microchunktv!

  • Great eyes, didnt pay much attention after that.

  • how much did the sony camera cost?

  • Very good demo! The shotgun came out fantastic. It killed all the background noise comeing from the sides and the rear of the camera. This demo was far better than any other on camera vs. shotgun mic demos. B&H did a demo like this, and you could barely tell the difference between the built in and shotgun mike. Once again, excellent presentation!

  • the built mic seem to pick the most out of all 3. The shot gun mike did make a big difference from background noise and I could hear you must better the sony was the clearest as far as your voice ... However I would like to listen again if you could go outside next time that would help me out alot ... thanks again for the footage because im considering buying a GL2 with the shotgun mic... again thanks

  • @TGS265 The lav is the way to go for outside work hands down.

  • A boomed mic always sounds better in my opinion. I think lavs sound to chesty

  • you only get that noise when you use the built in mic. havin an external mic always solves this problem

  • I really really listened to this and the Sony UWP is the one that sounds the best to me. That mic makes me feel like I'm in the room while she recorded this. The shotgun mic just sounds like a classroom demonstration video.

  • I don't think there was any post processing though. It wouldn't take but four seconds to open the shotgun mic audio in Soundbooth or Audition and drop the lower bands a bit since that's the only part that really sticks out.

  • I'm going to be picking up a GL2 for my 1st indie-movie, and I was looking for a decent mic as the onboard picks up too much ambient noise from the onboard mic. I'm going to be also adding the Azden SGM Shotgun microphone.

    Thank you.

  • Interesting comparison. Onboard vs shotgun vs lavalier. It probably wasn't the point of your piece, but I'm curious about the Azden's functional distance and angle of coverage as a shotgun compared to the onboard mic.

Thinkin' about getting a Rode shotgun for the GL2.

  • Go with the Rode, I am going to get a Rode Shotgun for my GL2 and I am going to get a Audio Technica Wireless Lavalier

  • Im sorry to say this, but SONY mics usually suck. The built in one always works for me.

  • @MeanSausage The audio from a built in mic is HORRENDOUS. Just take my videos for example. :p

  • Get a vx 2100

  • yuppppp with a MKII

  • Thanks.

  • This girl reminds me of a hungry & hot little number in our town. She sure made alot of people happy, until she went to college... :)

  • I'm not sure whether or not to say thanks here, but glad you are happy.

  • @microchunktv Yeah not really sure what that has to do with anything. I like the Sony but its invasive of course if you are trying to just get location sound.

  • wtf???

  • How much for the Sony mic?

It seems really useful and if the price is right, I just have to pick it up.

  • Just have to Google it, I'm sure the price has changed since I bought it, but then it was around $300 to $400 I think.

  • Sony UWP-C1 Lavalier wireless UHF mic ftw

  • I actually liked the built in Canon GL2 mic. It seemed really clear, even though it caught background sound it seemed like. The 2 aftermarket ones you put on seemed like it contained you and just caught your voice. im just getting into film and stuff so i dont know if thats what is desired in films or not? Also, if I really dont have enough money to purchase a canon gl2 (i love the cam used my classmates) would u buy one used for around 800-1200? or whats another comparable cam?

  • Well, the ones that just caught me can be good in certain settings. Like doing an interview in a crowded place, ex: restaurant or conference. The shotgun mic does catch background noise, but not as much as the onboard. I don't know if I'd buy one used, when I spend that much money I like a warranty, but it could be good. I think the Canon GL2 is one of the cheapest in this class, so I don't really have any good suggestions for you.

  • Thanks for this video! I'm interested in the Sony, and it was interesting to hear the audio is indeed weaker with wireless mics, but what can you do right?

  • This could have been because the onboard mic uses different audio controls than the other two mics, I could have had the audio levels up on the onboard mic, and not on the others. This was close to my first time using the Beachtek adapter so I wasn't very familiar with it yet. So, I'm not positive that the other two are weaker.

  • I need to know how to connect my Ma 300 XLR adapter to my Canon gl2. I thought I did it right but no sound came ot from my wireless. is ther some setting I must use in the Canon? Please let me know.

  • I'm not sure, I use the Beachtek adapter, and it has a cable that plugs into the mic section on the side of the camera. Then I plug my mics into the Beachtek. I don't change any settings on the Canon, when the Beachtek is plugged into the mic port then the onboard mic stops working and it picks up whatever mic I have plugged in. Make sure your wireless settings on the mics are correct (same frequency and such).

  • is gl2 the same with xm2??if not plz tell me the differences and what is better

  • I'm not sure, but it looks that way from a quick Google search. It appears the XM2 is a European camera that supports PAL and the GL2 is NTSC. You should verify this info thought.

  • thx

  • i like the sony

  • It's so refreshing to see a woman who knows her stuff. Very impressed!!

  • I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  • Hi! Great video. :) I'm thinking about purchasing a GL2, but I'm not sure what type of microphone I should use. I'll be doing movies, so it needs to sound cinematically good, but since I'm a student I don't have a huge budget. Do you have a recommendation?

  • I keep trying to respond to this comment and for some reason YouTube doesn't acceept it. I really don't know what to recommend. I like the mics I have but I'm not sure they would work in your situation. I would go to BHPhoto and read reviews, people give a lot of info in their reviews.

  • thanks so much! :)

  • You know I think that this is part of the problem we are having with any video published on YouTube with Rode. I believe that it is getting recorded in Mono and I am going to the BHphoto store on Monday and pick up the same adapter. you are right. The input is only Mono from what I see (for the GL2). Thanks a lot for your help.

  • You're welcome, be sure to post and let me know if you get it solved and how you did it. I'm interested to hear.

  • thanks for this video. Maybe you can help a newbie in this area. I have the GL2 and using a Rode Shotgun NTG-2. I am connecting it directly in the microphone jack on the side of the camera. Should I be connecting it differently. My video sound sucks on YT when I use this microphone.

  • Well, if I'm looking at the right mic, then the Rode Shotgun NTG-2 seems to have a XLR connector. The Canon GL2 does not have an XLR port, so are you using some sort of converter? How does your audio sound in the editing process? Is it normal? When you create your video project what specifications do you use, 48khz or 32, or something else? I use the Beachtek mic adapter on my Canon. There is a link in the description.

  • Take that back, no link in the description, but if you click the link to the microchunk blog you can find a link there to the Beachtek adapter I use.

  • so I think that I have the issue isolated. It is either the Beachtek Adapter or a setting on the GL that allows me to select Stereo. Just to be clear - I connect it via a Mic Jack on the GL2

  • I'm pretty sure the GL2 does not allow you to select stereo/mono. I think it is just one or the other if I remember correctly. On the Beachtek you do have an option of selecting stereo or mono, and using the XLR cable.

  • You're welcome, have fun with your GL2!

  • I assume you are using the mic that came with the camera? If you are this is a common thing. If you want to eliminate the tape noise you would either have to do major sound editing or you could get another microphone like the ones I demonstrated in this video. Does this help?

  • helpful, thanks!

  • You're welcome

  • Thanks I've noticed the sound qualities but..what do you suggest for outdoors and indoors?:)

  • Outdoors the Sony mic in this video works great as far as leaving out background noise. The shotgun mic does ok.

  • I purchased SGM-1X mic and when I connect it to my Canon HF100 camera I only get audio in the left channel. Is this normal? I am not going through an XLR adapter but am connecting it with an XLR to 1/8" cable. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Do you have a setting on your adapter that is for mono/stereo? This setting would control whether or not it recorded on one channel or both. I use a Beachtek adapter and it has a switch to go between mono and stereo.

  • I will do that. However, I'm not planning on buying it this year, since I'm about to buy a camera crane and other supplies to go with it.

  • Cool, I look forward to seeing it!

  • Azden shotgun mic does have the best sound. I'm looking into purchasing the Azden wireless lav. mic. Thanks for the review.

  • Cool, if you happen to get the Azden wireless lav mic I'd love it if you did a video response testing the mic out.

  • I approve!

  • I personally think the GL2 stock mic sounds the best.

  • Thanks for the feedback.

  • Thanks for the test babe. I just bought a sony uwp and put in the keywords and your vid came up. Very helpful - saved me a lot of testing. Btw, not to be chauvinistic or anything but - a little make up, hairstyling, n nice lighting and you would make a pretty hot host. Esp for a camera equpment podcast...us camera geeks would definitely watch. ;) Keep up the good work!

  • LOL, thanks for the advice.

  • You're perfect. Anime nerds don't know a lot of real women. They tend to want to fit all women into a fantasy of some sort. Thank you for the review. Any idea how the wireless lav works out in a noisy field situation?

  • Thanks for the compliment. Yea, it works great in a noisy situation. I will send you a couple videos we did with the mic in outdoor situations.

  • i like the last one the best

    spanks for the vid

  • You're welcome.

  • Good job, finally someone tests these things while taping themselves. VERY HELPFUL.

  • I'm glad it was helpful, and I hope more people start doing mic tests this way. It makes the purchasing process much easier.

  • shotgun mike still records background noise or cam noise. Lavalier does not do that , but it is useless for films, cause it will not record footsteps or doorslams etc. The onboard mic sucks.

  • Sounds like you watched the whole thing, nice review.

  • Thanks.

  • what exact shotgun model was the one you were using? It sounded good.

  • If you click on the link in the description it will take you to a post that has a link to all the exact mics and models on BH Photo Video's site.

  • That's cool Joe, thanks for the comment.

  • Great report. Useful to compare 'apples with apples'.

    Cheers,

    D

  • Thanks!

  • Glad it was helpful.

  • Glad I could help.
