How big was that comet (at a guess)? Shall we assume it was made of a lot of rock and water and its size was about a mile across?
What would happen if something like that had a similar collision with Venus? I think it would probably cause a substantial volcanic eruption, thereby changing the atmosphere in some way or another. Does anybody here have any thoughts or guesses of what might occur in the short and long term?
Been there, done that. Unfortunately, I'm now trapped on a penal colony situated on an asteroid, trapped between acid spitting aliens with like a hundred mouths inside their one big mouth, these fishnet wearing dudes with dreadlocks that are always hunting for prey, and brutal intergalactic prisoners, including this one buff guy with funky eyes who can see in pitch darkness.
Sorry, just to clarify. I'm not getting at treeasurex for posting, or trying to get too techy about this. But the tone of the clip "assumes" that there's a replica of Earth right there.
I'm an amateur science nerdo and spend ages on T'Interweb watching stuff like this. But this sort of docu works me up. "Orbiting, is this planet [flashes up a picture of what is basically Earth, when we haven't the foggiest what it actually looks like]..."
Then, "They could be listening to our signals, 20 years old..." Well, if they can receive and transduce that sort of stuff, they can almost certainly send. And we ain't heard them. THINK peeps!
so if this planet dus really exist how was it discovered if its millions of miles away? it would take hundreds or maybe thousands of years to get there
Why don't the guys at Nasa send a concentrated ray of electromagnetic pulses to these planets. You never know what we get back 40 years into the future.
P A N D O R A! and get this into your head scientists, there are NO living beings which we can sense with our senses and machines outside this world. Don't waste people's money on this nonsense. Besides that, the planet looks beautiful.
we don't even know if this planet even has water on it. it could be a dead planet like mars. we don't know. mars is also in the inhabitable zone. so is the moon. i do believe that out there somewhere there is other forms of inteligent life I don't think the universe is brimming over with it or we'd would have made contact at some point in our human history.
@swampzoid I believe they've already made contact with us. But besides the point. I don't think you understand how planets are detected... Detecting water could be easy. Let me explain.
We have used the electromagnetic spectrum, by using this, we can detect the kind of gases it's atmosphere is "leaking".
We can use radial velocity as a way of determining it's weight and distance from the star. ect Want more detail?
@swampzoid Actually Mars IS in the habitable zone, its on the furthest edge, we are on the closest edge to the sun. But mars lost its atmosphere (or didnt have it but almost did) for some unknown reason (i heard a story on the internet that is most likely not true and could be true if your a spiritualist.) and became dead
@minecraftaltair it also depends on the amount of heat the sun is producing. It could be a big planet, close to the sun, but the sun may be producing less heat than our sun. Hence it would have the right atmosphere.
@treasuredroperX I believe the immediate response from the Church if we find extraterrestrial life would be "They are demons sent from hell to trick us!"
Oh, that may not be the case. When asked about extraterrestrial life, the Vatican's chief astronomer acknowledged the possibility existed. An interesting thought he added was that the intelligent life out there might have never needed salvation, and thus exist in a state of grace which humans lost.
@12dollarsand78cents If they do exist. The don't have gods, they a lot more intelligent than us and they do not believe in gods. Their race is 1 billion years older than ours, and because of that there might be another intelligent race like them.
We had an intelligent race like us on earth, but we killed them off in dominance.
Well if you want to live there you should put a new, intelligent brain and take care of it otherwise no Gliese 581g
