All men wish they could be like Steve mcqueen for one day, and i wish i had wrote that fantastic music, and the movie and taken Faye dunaway out, and i would have let her keep the money!.
This has been one of my favorite movies for many years. This song is used when Steve sneaks out of his house, knocks out the guy who's spying on him, puts him in his Chevy unconscious and lets the car roll away to run into a tree. When cops come to check out this accident, they discover it's one of their coworkers. The big laugh this scene got at the time was one of the cops reciting the then-new Miranda Rights statement to who he thought was a drunk driver.
This is one of the greatest films of the 1960s. Steve, Faye, the supporting cast, the split-screen, Legrand's score, "Windmills Of Your Mind", the chess scene leading to that kiss...
It's troubling to think that some folks only know the Brosnan/Russo version. They're fine actors, but the remake they starred in was almost as lame as the Ford/Ormond remake of Billy Wilder's "Sabrina" starring Bogart and Audrey Hepburn.
Some films, you just want to swap out the remakes for the reissues...
ROBSBIGSCITYSOUL, you posted this video, didn't you? Good job, man! I'm showing it off to spark interest among the unaware...which include the many younger Steve McQueen fans who had no idea he did this, or that this was his favourite film because it proved he could act with the suavity of the best of Hollywood..
30 years is plenty of time, but who knows? It was the radical surgery that killed him. I think he might have lived years longer, with the cancer, but he knew it would have been grizzly. If he'd killed himself... no insurance for his kids. I think the surgery was his way out... knowingly.
This track appears in the film when Vicki sends a man to keep a tight watch on Tom's every move.
The Boston Wrangler has a similar fun swing to it, but with the sublime addition of tense keys and strings dropping in and out, plus a crazy organ fill that gives a subtle touch of psychedelia to the piece."
I saw recently a documentary about Steve McQueen. He had many hesitations and he didn't want to play in the movie. Before Thomas Crown he had never played in any similar movie. His wife had to tell him that he didn't have the chance to choose anymore and already other actors were reading the script. He said yes instantly! Anyway , he managed to look sexy and sophisticated. The movie remains definitely modern.
i really "dig" faye dunaway's hairstyle in the scene where she is at the beach and looks back over her left shoulder!!! i think it is like 2:57 seconds into this video clip. talk about "groovy"!!!
I've been trying to find the name of this song forever! Is the soundtrack available to buy and if so does it sound like this or the version in the film (not that this is bad)
This is not the same music from the movie... listen for yourself. Goto the youtube search bar, type in "ththcrafi" goto the 8 minute 52 second mark, and listen. I felt ripped off when I bought the CD soundtrack, because its not the same "Boston Wrangler". Sorry Rob, for reposting, I just can't let it go. LOL !
Love the music, love both of these actors (and Paul Burke, who plays the cop)--hate the movie though. Norman Jewison, who directed it, once described it as "a love story between two sh*ts"
Fantastic! Thanks for mixing and posting. It's long been one of my favorite films. Interesting aside Thomas Crown's Beacon Hill mansion remains the most expensive freestanding residence ever sold in Boston.
Firstly, thanks for sharing this!! Can't tell you how many times I rewound the videotape of this film just listen to this piece of music.
Now, this is the weird thing... I much prefer the ACTUAL music in the movie to the soundtrack's version ( that we are hearing here). The trumpet solo on the original film's score of the Boston Wrangler purely KICKS serious ass!!!! :O)
Maybe some kind person (who owns it) will share that particular scene and accompanying music with the YouTube community. ::rubbing hands together, smiling::
Its been a while since I saw the film. The soundtrack's disc doesn't say that 'The Boston Wrangler' was re-recorded. Yet, it is a slightly longer version than in the film's scene. I realize its a trombone, too. :)
Groovy 60s music...love it.

By 'taking Faye dunaway out' i meant for a meal and dance by the way, in that context.

Ingeniuos robbery, fantastic music which fits perfect with the picture, similar to Ennio Morricone, and Bernard Herman.

to bad steve smoked. we'd have had many more great films from him.

P.S. it was the asbestos not the tobacco that got him.

fauxtoehead (love your name):
actually, the asbestos would've taken a much longer time to kill him. if you combine the smoking with tobacco it takes you down fast.
regardless of how it happened, it was sad to see a great talent taken too soon.
