I was firing to these monsters at Kings Cross. You poeple that wact them and think how romantic they are haven't a clue on how hard the firemen worked on them! For me, the diesels nevr came soon enough. !956-78 I wasted on these.
@g7usl, thanks for your comments but as I have been on the footplate on the mainline quite a few times I certainly know how hard the fireman works on a steam engine. However most of the current and ex footplate staff I have met have a different view of steam engines to yourself and enjoy the hard work and sense of satisfaction in doing a difficult job well.
