  • Ouch...the high notes are...high indeed. I'd almost say to high for him...It's still a wonder for me someone can sing Rossini, Verdi and Puccini...

  • There are so few singers who truly achieve an effortless legato line, which is absolutely necessary for Rossini. What tenor alive today can even begin to favorably compete with Vargas as far as this is concerned? His effortless and perfect technique, coupled to breath control that is second to none and his intelligent and very believable interpretation make him one of the tenors to reckon with as the very best of the best! Bravo Vargas! You're TOPS to me!

Bravo!

  • 2 words : Lawrence Brownlee....

  • There are some false sounds, but generally he is very good

  • Vargas is good enough but Araiza is AWESOME, AMAZING!!!

  • he is amazing and better live.

  • There are YouTube videos from user camilla0690 showing RV singing Foresto;s heaviest music, the aria and cabaletta from the Prologue. I'd be interested to know what was painful about it. RV's leaving Rossini was a blessing to the entire opera world that experienced some void created by the slowing down of Domingo and Pavarotti. Also,he was not really an exclusive Rossini specialist right from the start. He did Werther,Tamino,Edgardo,Faust,Verdi, etc.

  • Should have stayed with this repertoire. His Foresto in the Attilaat the Met was painful.

  • This is really one of my Fav....he is so Fantastic !!

  • This is an eample of true lyric tenor a warm sound with an easy and lovely production...I think in the states we have forgotten the sound of true lyrics like Vargas, Alagna, Valletti, Tagliavini and Gedda. its about a balance in warmth weight squillo and breath and Vargas is one of if not the best living example of lyric singing...though he does share the thrown with alagna in my mind

  • Great!!! I thougth he would be to heavy for the role, but he does it wonderfully...wow!!!

Will like to see more of him in this "tenore di grazia repertoire".

  • To my mind,R.Vargas is much better in some of G.Donizetti's operas.

  • great singinf and interpretation from vargas, see javier camarena´s interpretation and yo`´ll all love it too. these are two great singers

  • Exacto.

Que mucha mierda has escrito.

Francisco me parecía maravilloso.

  • He is fabulous!!! What vocal control he has, and a wonderful dark sound...very impressive! I seem to prefer dark lyric tenors - Carreras of the past generation and Vargas of this generation. Bravo, Vargas!

  • you said, carreras of the past, but lets not forget Juan Diego Florez

  • Florez is a very fine singer indeed, but the lightness of his voice doesn't appeal to me. I prefer tenors who have a more rich baritonal timbre...does that make sense? Vargas is the one of the current generation whose voice really appeals to me. His voice is beautiful and yet has a very masculine sound.

  • It does make sense, and good point yours.

  • Yes it make sense! It also proofs that when you have a good effortless teqnicue, you are able to sing allmost everything...and i keep amazed when i listen mr Vargas, he is a true supersinger, too underrated...at least in my mind..i think he is the best lyric tenor since the 90s

  • He does sing this beautifully.

  • @1Ooppera Yes he is way too underrated. He's very talented and not a byproduct of overhyped media and commercial promotion, like certain other current tenors.

  • Wonderful.Totally awesome hearing this aria with such a full voice yet surprisingly good coloraturas. Bravo!

  • I totally agree! Has anyone seen him performing recently? According to Operabase his doing a lot of lyric roles of Verdi nowadays, and even Roméo, with some Nemorino and Don Ottavio.

  • Jussijoosua- You can still see his Nemorino in San Francisco on 11/26 if you are in the area. Otherwise, he'll be at Carnegie Hall in New York on 12/08 for the Verdi Requiem. On 12/15, he will start his run of Bohemes at the MET through early January. Then he goes to Vienna for Manon and Onegin.RV did Romeo at the Met and Houston a few years back. He's been singing a lot of Verdi and some Mozart in Europe and US too. Next season, he'll be in Berlioz' Damnation, then in Verdi's Attila at the MET.

  • Thank you for the info! I doubt that I could find my way down to Vienna anytime soon, but you never know... Would be pretty cool to see him live!

  • Question for danbar - since you are obviously a fan of this fine tenor, can you tell me where I might find his schedule on the internet? The last time I looked at his official website, it hadn't been updated in a while. Thank you!

  • Mitico Ramon un mito!!!!! :)

  • GRANDE ARTISTA BRAVO!!!

  • Bravo Vargas!!!! Does anyone have his first bel canto disc? It is no longer available. I would love for those to be out on youtube!!!

Realmente nunca me gusto.

Florez e Blake fanno quest'aria molto meglio!

  • He has a great voice, but the aria is cut. Lazy.

  • You are saying that the aria is cut because he did not sing mai da guidar, si si..?

He should keep this repertory for him

  • perfect

  • Since when did a Rossini tenor sing with such a dark sexy manly sound?

Since when did a Rossini tenor have strong low notes AND a thrilling top?

This beautiful man does full voice what pretty-boy JDF does in miniature.

Callas and Sutherland told us 50 years ago that a big soprano can sing florid music but there haven't been too many tenors to make the same point.

Ten years after this Met broadcast, if Vargas is not The Tenor of our time, I'd like to know who is.

  • Both Chris Merritt and Rockwell Blake have thrilling top notes and incredible lower registers, which is required of Rossini tenors.

  • Amen to that. A beautiful voice with a liric sound and singing coloratura like that. Just love him.

Juan Diego, nice voice but so little, it sounds like a mosquito... I will never pay to hear him again. A waste of time and money. Very disapointing.

  • I think Ramon´s rendition is amazing, but the opening is too fast ans although his technique is pristine he doesn´t have the flexibility of Francisco Araiza. What I certainly agree on is that he has something in common with Araiza though. Gorgeous voices and incredible acting stiffness

  • At this point in the opera, he just dropped his comic role of

the valet in disguise and assumed his princely duties. His dignified demeanor and movements are quite appropriate. Much of his acting is in the voice. I don't know how the stiff acting thing got started. I saw him crack up an audience over and over as Nemorino; I saw him jump from the floor to table tops as Hoffman a few times at every performance. He does not do a lot of arm flapping and facial distortions as cover up.

  • I totally agree that we don't want Ramon to do the horrific overacting of Villazón which just like in the case of Domingo, he uses to distract from the forcefulness of his voice production. Ramon needs to losen up a little bit and offer the whole package. The days of the singing statue are gone with the great Pavarotti. Singers need to study acting more!

  • Oh please... who cares if he did act or moved more. If he didn´t do it is because, or the stage director told him not to do too much or he needed to concentrate to sing this difficult aria. I think he did well.

  • You should see Francisco Araiza singing this aria. You'll notice that although Araiza's is not the greatest acting, he adds excitement to his singing which, due to his great singing technique, is never compromised. There shouls be a balance. We don't want the gross overacting of Villazón, nor the statuesque attitude of the Great Pavarotti.

  • Yet you would prefer the gray and unsophisticated voice of Araiza - too much H in his coloratura, too abrupt and he changes constant tempo (mostly slowing the music down) at times when it is not at all called for! He is the only one who sings it semi well on recordings, because the good recordings (such as this one) are not available for purchase anywhere. Villazon rules among all active tenors on the popular opera scene - no comparison! I have seen him twice live, and he delivers every time.

  • I guess the difference between Villazón and Araiza is that the later has never stopped singing due to bad technique. I have been to two of Araiza´s Cenerentola's, once as part of the cast. I´ve reviewed the scores and his tempo changes are within the style (we´re not talking Mozart´s metronomic style here) and done tastefully. I love Vargas' voice but I'd love a bit more of interpretation. Villazón RULED while he was around. I hope he'll come back understanding the limitations of his own voice.

  • Oh, he still sings:

    watch?v=UugMaRtylFs

    --------------------------

he only stopped for a couple of months because of a crazy schedule...

  • Not quite. He stopped because his voice was failing. In the 70s, Plácido Domingo went from Rodolfo and Alfredo, to Othello on schedules that many thought to be crazy and yet, he NEVER stopped. Domingo's technique was never the best, specially as he "covers" by rolling his tongue, yet, he continues singing. I have nothing against Villazón. As a Mexican I should be proud of him and I am! But the fact that he's proven to be his worst detractor is a fact.

  • What an incredible voice and technique! His voice was already lirico-spinto here, and to do all this florid singing and death defying leaps with such volume and intensity is truly astounding. He sings Verdi at the same high level as his Rossini. He is a unique and very special artist.

  • It´s very exiting to hear a real liric voice that can sing so clean and flexible this repertoire that has been wroten for a lighter voice. Of course it´s easier to sing that reperoire to Florez (the voice is three times smaller als Vargas. Vargas sing also incredible the Verdi`s repertoire: Ballo, Luisa Miller, etc... Who can do that? BRAVO RAMON!

  • This is singing for the ages. His divisions are like a string of pearls and he is singing sul fiato and not putting on his vocal cords. Superb!

  • incredible !! I am so used to JD Forez's voice (which I love so much) that I wrongly think that no one else can sing better this kind of bel canto repertoire. I really enjoyed Ramon's interpretation, deeper voice, nice texture and ... those beautiful higher notes ...

Saludos

  • Despite being a die-hard Juan Diego fangirl, I'm increasingly falling in love with Vargas. He doesn't have that clear ringing tone I like about Florez, but he has a lovely smooth voice, his technique is just fucking impeccable, and my god he lets fly those high notes with seemingly no effort at all! Truly an amazing talent.

  • I love Bel canto, can't explain it, Great Job Ramon!!

  • Really nice but so nice that Ramon has changed for Donizetti, Puccini, verdi...His beautiful qualities are more interesting with them.

  • im so glad he is MEXICAN...like me, Mexico is exporting a lot of talents around the world like Octavio Moreno, Arturo Chacon, Ramon Vargas and Rolando Villazon.

  • I agree, skarlita19... Ramon Vargas did a wonderful job with this aria! I can't help but wonder if Francisco Araiza inspired a whole generation of singers like Vargas and Villazon... Viva Mexico!

  • Chacon??? no!!!!!

  • He did an album early in his career of bel canto arias I think on the Claves Label?, AMAZING Rossini singing.

I gave this album to a friend and now I cannot find it anywhere....

  • Wow!!! I didn't know sang Don Ramiro either!!! I love his Almaviva on the Naxos Barbiere set!!! It's so good to hear a fuller voiced tenor fach singing such florid Rossini. It's amazing to see how far he's progressed into the lyrical repertoire, particularly the Massenet and Verdi! I concur, he also reminds me of Araiza. Very very stylish. Bravo Vargas!

  • Holy crap I didn't even know Ramon actually sang Don Ramiro. He's amazing with that, remembers me a bit of the great Araiza. Heroic, but still with great coloratura and varianti that he does in the second part of the cabaletta. Thanks for posting!

  • Waw!... Rossini ,Bellini and Donizetti the triumvirate of the Bel Canto!I love them!

  • beautiful. nice to hear a fuller sound from a tenor in this rep.

  • I remember the first time I ever heard him, on a recording of L'Italiana in Algieri, and what great technique he had. I hear tell he does nto sound quite this good any more, but this clip is first rank singing.

  • No, he sounds wonderful. His has a fantastic Technique, his voice is perfectly preserved, thicker, warmer...the top a little warmer. Great live in the house.

  • what an exciting rendition! Sometimes his tone isn't all that pretty, but what a fantastic top, and the articulation of the melody as well as those coloratura phrases is sublime. It also shows how great the music is; those staccato strings before 'dolce speranza', how hilarious and fun!
