@Smartboy8877 THAT MEANS THE REAL JEWS ARE BLACK THE ONES CALLIN THEMSELVES JEWS ARE THE DESCENDANTS OF CAVE MEN....GOGGLE JEWS IN ETHIOPIA THE ORIGINAL JEWS ARE THE HEBREWS WHO ARE BLACK!..DO THE RESEARCH
I am a proud Jew, but I do not believe in anyone being initiated into any religion against the will of the people raising him/her. This is why I do not condone Archie's behavior in this episode.
I like Archie's sentiment, but infant baptism is not at all Biblical. The Bible says that a person who believes should be baptized. A baby isn't capable of believing. I do love this episode though.
@KellyGreen5555 Neither do i! In fact if you look later on in the series when they move to california up until they start with Archie Bunker's place, he leaves gloria for one of his students and they move to a hippie commune, Archie plays the prime role of a good father he knew mike was a meat head when he first saw him hence the name and how much he has hurt gloria and their child. Cant stand Mike so I totally agree with you there. :)
If Mike were really a meat head, he would not have been a big enough person to eventually forgive Archie for baptising Joey and to say to Archie "I know you always thought I hate you but I love you" before leaving for California!
I don't see what is the problem with Mike having the baby baptised. I was baptised in a protestant church, but I chose not too and don't follow that religion. I more believe in energies, karma/wiccan, and reincarnation
"If there is a God, then why is there so much unhappiness in the world?" Honestly Michael, if you took some classes/courses in theology/religious studies, you'd learn that the reason why the world is imperfect is because when Adam and Eve first ate the forbidden fruit, it caused the world to be cursed with evil, death, pain, and unhappiness and that is why all these bad things happen everyday in life.
@Jakegothicsnake - The ol' original sin argument...brilliant! Write back when you can come up with a legitamately viable reason for the human condition instead of this overly antiquated creationist bunk!!
I never noticed before but, Arch stifled Edith with the remote control. I remember that version of remote control from way back. They sort of made a "meeping" kinda sound when you'd hit one of those buttons.
Mike is such a hypocrite. He doesn't want the kid baptised because he wants the kid to make his own choice later on in life, yet he goes ahead and has the kid circumcised. What if the kid wants to know what it's like to have foreskin?
I'm guessin' this comes from someone who isn't circumsized. My member is just fine without a roll of thick, disgusting, cheesy skin wrapped around it. Gah, foreskins turn my stomach just to think about them.
@FijneWIET But the baby doesn't even remember the circumcision. They are too young. Also, don't they apply anesthesia so the baby doesn't feel pain? There are many benefits to circumcision. I think the Muslim tradition of circumcision at 13 is more barbaric.
@XtreemMetalMan You're both wrong .. Theres is no exact date , when to circumcise according to Islam. Most Boys are circumcised before puberty. Hardly any muslim boy is circumcised as late as 13. ( they might be autonomous enough to offer some resistance at that age). Theyre "done" mostly between 3 and 10 years of age...without being asked for permission of course.!
@XtreemMetalMan NO THEY DON'TUSE ANTHAESTHESIA. And they do remember it -not verbally but bodily...Before we learn to express ourselves verbally through the spoken word we memorise experiences both painful or pleasurable in kind bodily.
And by the way there is a visual ´differnce they are certain to note when theyre older, >So they are to note an optically questionable circular scar and scar -tissue. Benefits - increasing loss of sensativity , lack of mechanical and immunological protection ?
@FijneWIET according to your profile you live in the Netherlands...
I'm gad to reform you hence that the Ryoal Dutch Medical Association a few weeks ago formelly denounced circumcision declaring it to be not only medically unneccessary but harmful, stating that unvoluntary circumcision of minors constitues child abuse comparable to FGC. Personally your country has immensely risen in in my esteem due to this humane and enlightened decision of your medical establishment! lang leve Oranje !
I agree on this point. I thought Mike was all new-age, love everyone, hippie type. He won't allow some water over his head for a religious custom that would make the child's grandparents feel better, but to surgically alter his child's genitals in the name of social custom is fine?
I totally agree with you. Obedience to the priests of deist religion and religionist bigots is morally wrong, backwards and old fashionaed. Progressive people rather adhere to the tenets of the priests of secular society -the medical profession which is socially acceptable. But hey- that was the 1970s , religious conservative were impoverished and uninfluential back then, Liberal media than thought Christianity was dying never to rise again-what a blunder.
@CheekyThrill But the succeding decades witnessed the revival of Christianity rIse to fame and power of arch-conservetive Christian leaders, who would make old american tv-icon Archie Bunker appear like a stout leftist-liberal.
And of course you are right- pouring some water over his head is neither a traumatic, nor painful, or sexually crippling ,potentially fatal, or disfiguring as circumcision beyond dispute ( especially on boys as young as 1 or 2 days) invariably is. It must be banned !
@agincourts Truely said .... He really is an ultimate hypocrite.
Yet back then almost all boys delivered in US hospitals were unvoluntarily circumcised right after birth as a matter of course. Sadly, questioning the medical merit of THIS RITUAL or the infallibility or omniscience of doctors probably did occur to even less parents than today. So cIrcumcision in the 1970s still was ( or rather misconceived as) ""normal""".
@agincourts By the way I watched this episode deliberitaly because i knew the issue of circumcision was perfuntorily referred to.
I am delighted that some viewers including you noted this hypocrisy. ( Not to mention the cruel (yet THEN nothing but normal and "trival") belittlement and extenution of the flagrant human rights violation! Customary to the operation anaesthesia , which is highly ineffective anyway, is rarely used during routine neonatal circs as performed upon roughly 55 % of boys.
@DiAnno13 yes and mayby true phimosis ( and many doctors proclivity to misdiagnose it) is God's nefandous and macabre way of turning everyone into Jews or Muslims. Though you don't need to be Jew or suffer from true phimoses to be circumsied in the US. Anyway GOd works renownedly in mystrious ways. And he has just a very dark and cynical sense of humour. ( No offence, man Im just joking around)
you know whats funny about archie is that his beliefs are common around the western civilization. Such as souls, God and heaven. It's almost as if the writers are making fun of society for believing it
With what Edith said, I am glad my nephew wasn't baptised. I never believed in it and I didn't care for it because I was bapt and so were my sister, it didn't make any difference.
kids need to be taught at an early age and Baptism is right for religious families. Saying kids "can wait to decide" is just parents not doing their duty to raise their kids.
this is so great!

I think there are 4 basic cultural "reasons" for circumcision
1) religious (=barbaric)
2) to be "clean" (=personal hygiene... keep your body clean, you wipe your ass, so clean your foreskin too...)
3) to look like his dad/friends... (oh PLEASE.. what if dad has dentures?)
4) ... to prevent MASTURBATION.... (why not simply cut off their hands).....
FijneWIET 1 year ago
@FijneWIET you forgot one fundemental reason
- brutal cupidity and lust for monetary gain as well as the perverted libido of the pedo-sadist.
Circumsicion offers a socially acceptable and perfectly legal outlet for the abominable desires of the crypto-pervert.
