  • My sensei actually went over and trained with Tohyama-sensei the year before he passed away, and was planning on visiting him when he heard the news about his passing. :/

  • S

uch a great memory of a great man.

  • ¡Grande!

  • awesome vid!!!

  • That what I want to be when I grow up!

  • what was his age?

  • Grandissimo!!!!!!

  • gracias Sensei Tohyama Seiko

  • Real Karate

  • 82 anni!..........

  • This guy is ripped dang he's in better shape then most 20 year olds

  • rip master

  • Great Sensei

  • very, very, very similar to dragon style form of my systerm of 5 animal kung fu. very esoteric form with lots of breathing and dynamic tension. this one is just shorter... by about 5 min or so.

  • @jjhaywood What is the point in making Katas of that length. This kata already hold 1000nds of bunkai. In my opinion it is better to do a short kata 1000 times then a long one only 100.

  • @Naraku1987

This is one of the three original katas of uechi ryu. I dont think one and one half minutes is overly long. As a matter of fact it is customary do do three reps.

  • Was Toyama Sensei a student of master Seijiro Sakihama?

  • what Karate genre is that? i do shotokan karate and not very many simular Punches and kicks.. hmm

  • @RealBunn Uechi-Ryu Karate

  • That master looks awesome.

How does it so hard to reach that level ?

I'm respect him from bottom of my heart.

TKD 2 dan & Krav maga trainee from Korea

  • one of the greatest masters of karate. no one of the best martial artist of our time. may master seiko rest in peace.

  • 10 degree? I don't want to know how long and hard to train to get that rank!

  • I wanna be this fit when I'm at this age. That's awsome

  • master takara

  • OSU!

  • Fantastic!! Even though I study Taekwon-Do I have the utmost respect for the different Ryus. This is my history.

  • he looks like Gen from Street Fighter ;)

  • soixante-quatorze ans

    -> he is 74 years old ;)

  • omg how old is he? he looks fit and strong..

  • if the date on this is accurate he was 85 years old. inspiring

  • the kata is Sanseiryu, and i'm sorry to correct you Uechisandan but i belive Toyama Sensei passed away in August of '09. great loss to us all

    (myself a yondan)

  • The last karateka to train under the founder, Kanbun Uech, still living and still practicing, doing demonstrations. I have met him several times, at events in

California, he's amazing. We (the ladies of the Women's Friendship Tour) were lucky to get the chance to visit his tiny home/dojo in Okinawa, and meet him.

  • This man invented karate, and I bet you can do the "adoken" like ryu .......

:D XD is joke you understand?

  • The best Uechi-ryu fighter nowadays

    watch?v=zzbsc3inkAU&feature=fvsr

  • unsung hero

  • it's almost disturbing the way that he tenses each muscle group individually. after the first convulsion you can clearly see the massive hump on his right shoulder and then after the second comes his left. he seems like a great man and i would have loved to have met him.

  • He is still alive... and still doing demos.

  • @uechisandan

have you any idea how old he is?

  • Sorry - I hadn't heard till just now, but he died less that a year ago, in April 09, at age 81.

  • Damn, that is one ripped old man!

  • karate invented karate .. I bet that makes hadoken

  • Actually karate is a mixture of Te, and chinese kung fu, maybe more, but those are the majority.

  • great master oss.

    I am karate beginer

    hi

  • ???? are you drunk?

  • Do you know What is kata ?

  • Incredible.

    R.I.P. Toyama Sensei.

  • ale SUPER!

  • nice to see yet another fool talk out of his ass.

  • rip toyama sensei :(

  • His health and power is/was unbelievable.

  • God Bless Toyama sensei. Thank you for your teachings.

  • OMG he is strong !

  • lots of real Okinawan Karate in the Los Angeles area.......you may want to consider going with one of the shorin Ryu styles, seeing you have a background in shotokan

  • uechi ryu isnt an ancent okinawan style, uechi kanbun learned this style panggainoon in china in the late 1890s and bought it back to okinawan in the 1900s and after he died his students renamed the style uechi ryu karate in honor of him, so uechu ryu is pretty much 100% unadultrated kung fu straight from china. not influenced by any okinawan styles at all and if it is, not by very much like how goju ryu evolved.

  • just because kanbun uechi learned Pangai-noon in china doesnt mean uechi ryu isnt okinawan because im sorry to tell u this but no where does an instructor teach every bit of a style uechi added stuff and taught a variation of pangai noon oh and yeah aloot of historians speculate if there was even a style named pangai-noon

and Kanbun Uechi himself referred to the art as Nan Pa Toro Ken

  • look @ the definition of his body @ his age....remarkable

  • muito bom!!

    Oss..

  • Vigour.

  • he's badass

  • When he died?

  • He passed away earlier this year. I live 5 minutes from his house/dojo. My grandfather was friends with Toyama sensei.

  • what happened to him?

  • If I understand correctly, he died of health conditions. The family haven't really said anything.

    Truly a legend master.

  • @shimagaijin1017

is there anyone that *doesn't* die of 'health conditions'?

The man was 81 years old...

  • @shimagaijin1017 This is actually from a dvd. Is this man truely someone to learn from? The advertisement threw me away so I didn't give it much thought.

  • @shimagaijin1017

How old Sensei was when he passed away?

  • @shimagaijin1017 where is his dojo located

  • @shimagaijin1017 thats awesome.

  • @shimagaijin1017 thats awesome. that you had the chance to train with such a awesome martial artist

  • Master roshi from dragon ball

  • R.I.P. Toyama sensei.

  • wow.

My sensei (who hugely impressed me) was a 4th Dan

I've never even seen a 10th Dan before.

    Very nice.

  • reminds me of Heihachi Mishima

  • this is just perfect ! thank you very much

  • Excellent...

  • This is why u gotta respect ol' people.

  • que en paz descance uno de los mas grossos de Uechi y el arte marcial!!

  • He is 74 at this time!

    Great shape

  • holy shit he's ripped.

  • perfect!!! the "core" action!!!

  • like you'd know

  • that's a strong old man. His dedication to his training and his experience has served him well i suppose.

  • Kordianz (4 days ago)

Fanstastik, I very Like watch this Okinawian karate style.

This is not karate, this is okinawa-te, karate is evolved from these styles, and these styles was evolved from kungfu, especially from south-shaolin styles

  • Fanstastik, I very Like watch this Okinawian karate style.

  • It looks amazing when he deploys and retracts his trapezius muscles on each side, really turtle-like.

  • Ol' man be jacked out of his minndd!! :o

i don't know all the different variations of karate.. but this kinda.. reminds me of Hung Ga.. i know it's not but it reminds me of it xD

  • i don´t want fight him, he´ll brake allmy bones

  • Total respect for his work ethic and the beauty of his art .He's bad to the bone

  • Although I do not train in traditional karate anymore (now I train in Kali). This was one of the most beautiful vid I have ever seen. I miss my Koei-Kan days. I wish there was a school near me in So. Cal

  • there is a sister style to Koei-Kan, and that is KeishinKan.....I recall more than a few of their dojo in the Los Angeles area

  • Toyama sensei passed away today.

The karate world lost forever one of the last great masters.

Rest in peace Toyama sensei, you'll be an example for all of us, forever.

Thank you for all your work, your dedication, and your love for the art...meeting you was one of my dreams, i hope that one day, we'll meet in heaven.

    Rest in peace

    Thank you

  • It deeply saddens me to find out that Toyama Sensei has passed. He impressed me more than any other martial artist.

    Condolences to his family.

  • I'd love to study Uechi-Ryu, but to my knowledge there aren't many schools in the UK :(

  • I think you have to watch the video in kodoryu web page to understand what sanchin, seisan and sanserui kata are!

you will find it spectacular, then contact them for more info, personal tuition, ...

  • perfect!~power is felt

  • RESPECT !

  • when it comes down to it.. this guy is the ultimate baller that ever balled the ball. pretty basic bottom line procedure right there..

  • just go and challenge him n try out issit true o not ahahaha

  • Wonderful to watch, thanks for posting it.

  • Those of lesser virtue will never understand.

  • RIDICULOUS!! Can you imagine what he looked like when he was 20? HELL even 40?! I pray to god this'll be me 50 years from now. AMAZING..

  • What a shame people have to post negative responses to wonder full archive stuff like this, we should all respect what these fine masters have given us, if you dont like it then simply dont look at it. Its very easy to be a hard, tough sounding person when you sit at your computer and type in how tough you are. I know it sounds hippy and soft but peace and love to you all.

  • Seiko Toyama is the only surviving student of Kanbun Uechi, the founder of Uechi-ryu. Uechi Ryu is one the of the four major systems of Karate on Okinawa. Toyama sensei is also the senior technical advisor for the Uechi Federation. So basically, the way he does it is the way it should be done.

  • it doesnt look like he has power cuz he is a master and he has learned how to blend his hip movements with the techniques. True karate is meant to be deceiving.

  • For a 70 years old guy, let's see:

    - No speed ... true

    - No power ... true ... grace?

    - No snap ... these punches should not snap

    - No form? The form is correct ^_^

  • what seravi said is true, for a 70 year old thats really good, but there is still power in those punches, just kinda hard to seen

  • It's a Kata! The speed and power are correct!

  • For one, since when is a frail old man like that gonna fight convicts in a prison situation? For two... A fight is a fight, and a punch the the throat is a punch to the throat. as for the "No snap, no power no form", seriously dude... Just piss off. Get back to your "real world".

  • Are you serious? Why are there always people who don't know anything about Martial Arts? I.E. StanhopeDoug.

  • Streetfights happen often within a few simple moves depending on the brutality.... They have little to do with a strong chin and young strong body, and a lot more to do with who hits hardest first.

  • nice video ;-)

  • To all you mma guys - this "Old Man" will cripple those so-called champions of today. His rules are - you attack him you will regret it! MMA rules are - RULES! You guys have no understanding of real martial arts. What this Man is doing is rooted in Yijinjing and Shisueijing - two very ancient Internal practices that convert a person into an impenetrable weapon. You guys just don't know. Sad.

  • mma is a sport. this is a fighting art intended to disable or kill any one that threatens your life. they are two different things.

  • he´s an example and a honor for all matrial artists.(pd:how old is he?)

  • I believe he was 73 at the time of this video

  • Uechi Rocks! A very nice solid and tradition karate. Its nothing flashy (not what its about anyway), but its very effective.

  • Dear mohamed614

Is this irony, are you just a jerk?

  • Karate Do is an art form that we all need to help preserve reguardless of your sub-style. It dose not matter if your Kenpo,Kyokushin,or Shotokan, corruption of Karate Do in the West is something we must all correct. I strongly believe that we should do away with the point sparring system and make Karate Do a restricted label based on a list of requirements. 90% of the "Karate" dojos in the U.S. have at least 85% Olympic TKD in their corriculm. That's just how extensive the damage is.

  • yeas i agree with brasshandmartialarts if you want to learn how to fight go train muay thai or mixed martial arts. here is philosofy and its pretty.

  • i miss him so much :( i want to go back to okinawa!!

  • I have not seen too many people his age move that fluently.....it looks fucking scarey. It's just like a grandmaster being only 30 years old which means he has the physical ability and mental capacity that would be unmatched by many people....JEEZ!

  • chi development is an important part of most east asian styles; Wong Fei Hung's famous ancestor, I believe it was Hung Hei Kung, warned that if chi is not emphasized, all the hard practice of youth goes right down the shitter. Well he didn't say it like THAT, but that is what he meant; if you do not work with chi, your body deteriorates, but if you work with it, it keeps its strength, even in old age.

  • Fantastic kata. Tohyama Seiko Sensei just exudes a wonderful presence. Truly digging the beard. Hope to grow one like that one day.

  • Almost a 100.

  • Your opinion is very....uninteresting Brad...

People train in Karate-do, Tae Kwon Do, Wushu, And other martial arts to learn more about themselves in an understanding. They dont always join to just learn to fight, that is not the true meaning of any one's art. Traditional Martial Arts is only dying because of people like Jet li, and Jackie Chan flying through the air. They expect to learn that in a week, thats why it is dying.

  • there is nothing wrong with jet li.. jet li is an exreamly deadly man.. he has had lots of training.. and he is as fast as a martial artist can come.. he had inspired lots of people to train in martial arts and both jet and jackie have said it takes years of dedication

  • Nothing against the man, but I lived and trained in China and he is a wushu team member whose goal is to be the best in form for competition. They did not fight. The Sanda members were the free style fighters. You can't be good in both as to be the tops in performance wushu takes too much time and training.

  • He's not a wushu team member at all. Until he died a short time ago he was one of the foremost practicioners of Uechi ryu on Okinawa. He was a direct link to Uechi Kanbun.

  • Actually my comment about the wushu team member was in regard to a post about Jet Li. I don't know how it ended up here on it's own. I've practiced Uechi Ryu since 1971 so know about Sensei Tohyama.

  • My apologies then. I haven't practiced Uechi for a few years now but I'm getting the itch to start again. I just know those first few classes are going to be killers. Good for you to have continued your practice.

  • Well I must admit it hasn't been a continuous 40 years of daily training and when I lived in China I actually went to the internal studies of xingyi and tai chi. But it's all good and most days now I do some of both Uechi and tai chi.

  • where u practice it at?

  • wushu team are show boters arnt they?

  • No, they are highly skilled performance artists. Just like some martial artists are very good tournament fighters or kata performers. But that doesn't necessarily translate into being a good fighter or having self defense skills.

  • Hey guys. Pwang Gai Noon /Uechi Ryu not a lot of difference. Its hard core.

The body is conditioned including the fingers

  • Do not under estimate this old Master.Big mistake. Many old masters in japan has tremendious power.

  • you think ufc fighters are more conditioned this guy?? ..what a joke .

  • This master is great!

  • This old man is totally ripped!!

  • Its funny, i'm from a Uechi Dojo in SW Fla (Keoshi Bass & Renshi Bass's Bushi-Kan) and people wouldn't think of Uechi being effective in the hands of even the smallest of Karate Ka. At tourneys i've seen some big bad Tae Kwon Do think they were going to out power the small guy and couldn't get pass a simple crane block. So it doesn't matter who someone is nor how much muscle and speed they have, when you began to underestimate, is when you are vulnerable. RIP Keoshi!!!

  • What? Is that sarcasm? What are you talking about? A 25 year old man in top shape will have a huge advantage against an 80 year old master. The master has a large advantage of experience as well, but if you really think that size, strength and overall better physical shape don't play a large role in winning a fight you are mistaken.

If the 25 year old has no idea how to fight at all he will most likely lose. If he can throw a punch and block however... experience isn't. invulnerability.

  • looks like souhtern mantis,(very nice) and nice kime. why they dont teach it europeans, 99,9% of european karatekas dont know anything about kime

  • Karate in the west has largely become a sport. Seeing a traditional practitioner like Tohyama Sensei is refreshing. Thanks for the presence of the strong traditional teachers for, without them, true karate would be lost in the trappings of money, ego and sports.

  • i agree to an extent. sport can be good, where else do you get to test your art in a legally and morally acceptable way? i think it should be more than the tip tap point sparring you see in most schools however. you cant blame just the teachers though. most people today want burger king, theyre too lazy to even cook. they want to sit on the couch and watch american idol.

  • with his experience and understanding of uechi ryu techniques he would destroy any mma fighter, of course he does not comepete since he seems very humble and would rather relax and make peace with others, unlike most if not all mma muscle men who think they can beat everyone up, even the fans think these gusy are unstoppable, skill is what matters not muscle or power, this takes years to practice and dedication, which is really needed among mma fighters.

  • a very humble man, and an exceptional sensei

  • he has remarkable physique, an ideal embodiment of the mastery of the martial arts, western practioners should have this kind of dedication, hopefully I could get that kind of dicipline.

  • you can start by spending 5 years doing sanchin everything u need 2 know is in that kata

  • That's a good point -- so many American karate teachers have huge beer bellies!

  • I am sad to say that most American teachers are phonies and are involved for money, ego or both. There are a minority of legitimate martial artists in America, but, because of the required dedication the numbers remain low and it is probably true in the west in general. We have helped perpetuate the myth of martial arts the public sees and it is a shame, and in some cases, criminal. I am fortunate to be a traditionalist but I seem to be virtually alone in upstate S.C.

  • you know most of them do you? an unfair observation. it is true the numbers remain low. but that isn't the teachers fault. bare knuckle full contact training just isnt "socially acceptable" by most people today. especially parents wanting to send their kids to karate class.

  • Brad, you are 31 and have not been around long enough to have an opinion. I was a yudansha in Japan 13 years before you were born. It is not an unfair observation, it is the sad truth. When you have seen 44 years of history regarding the degredation of martial arts in America, the extent people will go to in order to make money or stroke their fragile egos, let me know. Until then, I stand on an opinion based on experience you do not have yet, sir. However, you will have before you know it.

  • i am allowed to have my opinion thank you very much. i've seen plenty of degradation already. but it isnt always the teachers fault. there are alot of reasons for it. that was my point. you dont know "most of" them, so how can you call them phonies? not every school is a "mcdojo". they are the schools with HIGH numbers. good traditional dojos are usually low numbers. because people dont have time, or the desire to take on the study of a real authentic traditional art.

  • so do many okinawan and japanese.

  • bravo

  • Superb. I just keep watching this clip...

  • Truely a Master.

  • beautiful. what ammount of discipline does it take to achieve such perfection? to only have half of his ability...

  • He is 80 years old and built better than me :( must train harder!

  • that was absolutely amazing this Sensei is 80 years old and has such muscularity still and power unbelievable. thank you for sharing this video

  • I have to say sorry for I have to add more, but this man represents what a true 80yr old should be! I watched this 10 times the strength, speed and power is that of a master of body and spirit.

  • This sensei is amazing I humbly bow to him. 80 yrs old? I swear he is a 25 yr old wearing a fake beard. Truly this is the kind of man and others like him showing what we can achieve.Iwould like to know is there an english version of this? Also I would like to know if there is a video teaching this and breaking it down. I would do this kata even just out of honor for Tohyama Sensei.

  • Toyama Sensei is now 80 years old and still looks the same. He has been my teacher and mentor since 1998. He trains every day and teaches almost every night. He says he hasn't stopped learning yet.

    He is an amazing man.

Sensei tells us always to work hard in our youth so we can enjoy a strong and healthy old age.

  • Words to live by.

  • I'd put my money on Tohyama Sensei in a fight against any NFL linebacker!
