  • In soviet russia bass play you!

  • badlywant a 9 string now

  • restringing this must be a bitch

  • I took guitar lessons from greg a few years ago in helena, montana. He is an amazing musician and a really cool dude.

  • if they ever gave me a bass like that and told me to start playing id shit my pants and start crying

  • Ugh.

  • Am i the only bassist that hates this shit?

If Jamerson, Clarke, Wooten, Bootsy and all those other bass gods can kill it on 4 strings, 4 is good enough for me. This guy has zero feel and too many strings. he has a far bigger possible range but can do anything interesting with it

  • @HonkeyTonTon Am I the only musician who dislikes it when people judge another musician's skill on a one-minute video?

The video is to demo his bass, not his skill, anyways.

Les Claypool uses 6 strings sometimes. Have a problem with that? XD

  • Why is master hand and crazy hand playing bass like a boss?

  • This reminds me of that episode of goosebumps where all those pairs of hands are playing piano without bodies attached.

  • ah look, a youtube bass video with shitty unimaginative slap playing! Haven't seen that before!

  • thats not a bass! its a fucking tree!

  • i love watching other bass players play their instruments. I can see their different play styles and try to learn different techniques they use for picking and stuff. like the use of different fingers and hand movements and things... i think bass is a fantastic wide ranged instrument! BASS LOVE!

  • If that bass didn't have fanned frets, it would probably sound horrible haha.

  • Instrument's capabilities= fully explored

  • ur about to watch touching Ass

  • Whats the gague of the low string a 1000?

  • @musicguitarlessons I think it is normal a B string (.125-130).

  • Bass toucher.

  • Who puts strings on a surfboard?

  • This shit sucks. You suck.

  • I can't be the only one that sees the idiocy of all these people commenting on him not using the extra strings? Just because you have an instrument with a huge range doesn't mean its always right to use that range for every piece.

  • why are the frets angled that way?

  • @jaehaus i guess that's because the thicker strings need to be longer to sound good

  • @coldlettersofficial oh, I see....thanks!

  • zé ruela num toca bosta nenhuma .. kkkkkkk

  • My Friend Show me this when i was high i was trippin out sooo much

  • He stole my snow board... :(

  • sry but ... you obviously don't know what to do with the 5 extra strings...

  • no offense, but that was a pretty standard practice routine using octaves. In honesty, it sounded cheesy, you could do soooo much more with that bass and your talent man...

  • is it more than to showoff? he does not play all of the nine strings

  • EPIC!!!

  • Nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnice.

  • It looks like a warwick vampyre got stuck in a radiation chamber with a retarded spaceship.

  • to be honest i only clicked on this video because it had "bruce Campbell" and "BASS" in it.

  • Holy shit! A bass with arms that can play itself!

  • @chype hahahahahahahahahahahahhahahaha you made my day, dude!

  • @scottford1987 lol, you feel better now?

  • @gup1973 With this song maybe, but what's not to say he uses them in other songs? Maybe this was a bad choice for him to show off.

  • Why don't you see 9 strings in bands??

  • Ok, he could have just used a Warwick Vampyre Darklord or whatever it's called for what he did in this video.

  • @superstriker00 My BEE 9 has been around longer than the warwick vampire... my original 6 string bass i designed of this shape was built in 1994

  • @gregorybrucecampbell And both are inspired from a violin shape.

  • @scottford1987 You will also never see them try to defy or limit an instruments reach and sound with a string count. A bass is not a bass because of it's string count. There were many 4 string guitars that were around long before basses that were not called basses. Your statement was incorect and i feel sorry for the way your mind works. (Yea i probably made some typos)

  • Bruce Campbell plays Bass?

  • If we asked an artist why he used so many colors for his painting, and a drummer why he uses so many cymbals and this guy why he uses so many strings; the answer would be the same...because its my business!

If it wasn't for people like him, all us musicians would be doing the same boring thing.

  • magic hands

  • haha i can listen to this all day

  • Ahhh! Ghost-Bass Playing-Hands!!

  • this weapon will eliminate all living things!!!

  • That thing just looks like it wants to kill somebody.

  • where is his body!!!!!!!!!

  • @McKe

Perhaps he could've done this on 4 strings, but it would've resulted in a very odd tuning I think.

The reason he plays this on a 9 string bass is so he can play regular 4/5 string stuff, but also be able to hit the higher and lower notes without having to resort to some odd tuning. That's the reason I like 6 string basses.. you can play the regular stuff, and then some more (without too much of a hassle).

  • What happened to his body?

  • @redgibson1 how does it make this pointless? it's called a different style of playing this guy is actually playing funk the other guy is copying another persons theme for a video game, and the amount of strings doesn't matter,(the guy who did super maro bros only use 7 or 8 strings, not all 11)

it's the player in the end, and that guy who did super mario bros, i don't see him writing any of his own material so bottom line this guy is a way better player.

  • how many forests were necessary to build this thing?

  • @Savior94 Haters gonna hate. Cant believe when musicians give other musicians crap for having more strings than them.

  • @SubZ305 Didn't give crap. Ofc 9 strings are awesome and offer much more than 4 strings. I know that. I'd never wanted to give crap because I know that this guy is really talented!

  • changing the strings on that thing must be a bitch! hahahaha

  • if buckethead played this... (better than les claypool)

  • @Dumboparty44 I thought Buckethead was primarily a guitarist, not a bassist...?

  • The Bass looks Like a Gatling Gun and sounds like a Bazooka..sigh... i want it

  • Why does the fretboard warp like that?

  • @PrimusSucksOnThis it's called a fanned fret system, it gives a longer scale to the deeper strings, dingwall bases use them alot

  • @PrimusSucksOnThis it's because every string has an different scale (I think between 32" and 34"). the thinnest strings have the shortest scale, the thickest the longest. and that's why the frets were put on that way

  • Wounding that pickup must take forever...

  • @GiladMusic7 why not? its an EXTENDED RANGE instrument. why not extend the range a bit more?

  • @Savior94

Then you obviously know nothing of bass. Not belittling the 4 string bass, but the 5 and 6 strings just give you so much more to work with. Bass isn't just DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN over and over again, you know.

  • @Savior94 you think, i say you are wrong. i would never go back to a 4 string and trust me i have owned many 4 strings including a 1977 Kramer flying v with the metal neck i got rid of that heavy bastard. i now play a carvin lb76 ^string but to me i have to have more strings. i can do more with the guitar with the addtion of strings

  • @Savior94 a 5 string is also cool

  • Hey! I like it

  • I hate ppl who hate players with a bass that has a lot of strings.

I mean, let 'em enjoy their 9 stringed bass, if u don't need it don't buy it just don't act like an ass because these guys probably have plenty of skills on a regular 4 stringed bass too. probably enough to knock most of u ass-holes out.

  • While I wouldn't buy his CD, this is pretty cool to me.

  • @Jamiewaldie1992 Yeah, I understand what you mean, but the whole point of ETR is to go lower (or higher), so it makes sense that people enjoy focusing on the new strings that are put in place. I see both sides here but I guess the point I'm trying to make here is just that it's really nothing worth getting worked up over.

  • DO YOU SEE THIS! THIS IS MY BOOMSTICK! go bruce campell

  • Most of you hacks that post negative comments don't have links to your wonderful music....and you can't spell either. Morons. (Good job on the bass :)

  • I ffuckking LIKE THIS!

  • DISCO DISCO !!!

  • It's a bass, not a drum.

  • Cool

  • when it goes this far...it doesnt even qualify as a bass anymore

  • @misieuroo I've seen bigger

  • you need 2 days to start, first one for tuning and the other for playing!!

  • If Les Claypool played this...

  • @RyanTheEpic ...2012?

  • @RyanTheEpic Hahahahaha les claypool psshhhhhh if BILLY SHEEHAN PLAYED THIS!!!

  • @RyanTheEpic People will die

  • i don't understand why he needed a 9 strings bass to play that... nice groove anyway.

  • What's the tuning for that bass?

  • Sounds really flat, hope it's just the recording...

  • People should watch Chaoth, the bassist of the Avant-Garde metal band Unexpect.

  • Shitt ! that's awesome man ! Monstrous bass sound...

This breaks actually the conventional limits of today's music, yeah !

  • ok i get the multiple string thing but why the hell are the frets in ad an angle more up the neck why is that and how does it work with intonation???

    thing looks cool tho

  • @wietx3 because that is a multi scale instrument and when the neck has to be that long cause of the SUPER low tuning the angled frets help with the position on the neck of each note. Thats about as simple as i can make it but its only for 8 and 9 string guitars/basses for the majority of the time but some 7s have them

  • @CarnalFearAZ ok thanks mate i thought it had something to do with that although i was put of because 8 string guitars don't have that but then again this ain't a guitar:P:p

  • @wietx3 Look up "Fan frets"

  • Seinfeld ruined my brain.

  • 0:31 sounds like dolphins.

  • the ugliest & coolest thing i've seen in a while

  • @lukelittle82 doesnt matter if he was using only 4, he is playing in the tuning of a 9 string anyways which is still a feat of its own, if i were to attempt picking one of those bad boys up i wudnt no wat the fuck to do

  • but it's been played like a 4 strings in the video....only about 0:30 there's a percussive effect

  • How is this thing tuned?

  • precisionnnnnnnnnnnnnn!

  • non servono 9 corde per esser bravi, i miglior bassisti han sempre suonato col 4! quanti versi! solo esibizionismo!

  • para que quieres un bajo de 9 cuerdas cuando solo usas 3? hahahahaha

  • honestly, I only clicked this video because it had "Bruce Campbell" and "Bass" in the title.

  • This guy is obviously a skilled bassist but it just sounds like shit. 5 strings are enough, anything more is just overdoing it. Look how well Marcus Miller and Flea are at bass and they only have 4 strings to work with.

  • @BassGuy128 You're commenting that you only need 4-5 strings to make you a skillful bassist, with Flea as an example! Hahahaaaaa, he's bollocks! Colid Edwin's a better example, as is John Myung... fuck!

  • what do you tune that to ?

  • This guy has Bruce Campbll in his name, it's like he was destined for greatness!

  • @Natejitsu Think about it this way.A nine string bass is a bass and a guitar in one.Minus one string. If you can play each one separtated, why not both together?Of course noone can play a massive chord on this the traditional way,but you can tap on it like a Chapman Stick. In the near furture someone will show the musical community the FULL potential of this ERB(Extended Range Bass). And then it will be accepted big time.

  • @gebass6 I guess if you think about it that way it's reasonable, but IMO, it's still not practical for anything.

  • @Natejitsu It remains for the player to make it practical.Guitarist Tosin Abasi(with Animals As Leaders) shows us the potential of the 8 string guitar.Up until his debut most just used the lower strings of the 8 string. He shows us the potential of a given instrument previously deemed useless by the masses.

  • @luffynatsuharu I'm not Bruce, but you could Google Bee Basses.Be forwarned(no pun intended)that these basses are quite pricey!

  • and I have trouble playing the 6 string!

  • 27 bass ftw

  • @summitthescale You get off the shelf 9 string strings, only Conklin do a 9 string pack but you can get all the guages!

  • well that will blow your speakers

  • The bottom string is not a string, it's a ROPE!!

  • @californiaskunk That's what I used to think too. Then I got bored with my bass, but since I can't just add strings to it, and I can't afford a new bass, I ripped the frets out. lol, one of the best decisions I've ever made.

And more strings are necessary when bass has a more central role. Too many people just mimick what the guitar is doing only using the root note of a chord, but more proficient bassists could easily take advantage of a few extra strings.

  • i want that bass :D

  • @californiaskunk Because we're not all trying to play the same music. Some are trying to accomplish something different from your goal. That's why there is different music genres.Although I do think that maybe he should have played something that shows the full capability of the instrument. Then it might not have incurred so much venom.

  • Is that top string F#?

  • Check the guy playin Super mario on one....thats how it should be done!!

  • 0:31 is epic :D

  • People dont slap on ER basses that much.

    Mostly two hand tapping sturfff.

  • Why do I have the feeling that the frets on the bass are kind of twisted?

  • @Moodyz3

they are ;D gives the lower strings more tension..which is necessary with those low pitch ropes

  • @Moodyz3 Fanned frets

  • oh my god. amazing xD

  • @bassmajor lol or 7

  • 9 srings? Why? The neck on that joker is almost seven inches wide! What the heck?

  • @SpenceHarris95 why not?

  • Only way it could be cooler is if it was the ACTUAL Bruce Campbell playing it.

  • @mabb74 only because I read your post xD

  • pretty cool

  • Love it! :D

  • @bassmajor Not to mention some people just like the feel and sound of extended range instruments. I have a friend who only uses seven string guitars even though most of his stuff is in E just because he feels weird playing on a slimmer fretboard.

  • @Megamaniac610

yes true indeed, and I'm saying nothing against that. I like the feel of 6 string basses myself and certainly I dont' wanted my initial comment to be rated that high :D

The point I meant was simply: It's an official demonstration video for a damn expensive 9 string bass and propably the only official vid around and I was expecting stuff like chords, scale runs or tapping, you know, stuff that shows the potential of this thing. Well what you get is a mediocre vid with no good tone

  • @bassmajor probably the parts where he played more than 6 strings.

  • Sweet! Floating hands

  • great ! i like to play like thisssss but i can't . T_T

  • Well thanks for being the only guy on tube playing the bottom strings of a bass with way too many strings on it, that may sound like I'm being a dick but everyone else sucks assholes. Really, I appreciate it.

  • I wouldn't want to be the person to change the strings on that bass O.o even tuning it would take a good amount of time

  • @MetalKidDanny

You are correct - a 9 string bass DOES make you invisible. I went to Berkley College and I learned that. That shit took awhile to wrap my head around though.

If you're not ready to disappear just yet, I recommend an 8 string bass. That shit makes you all snowy and fuzzy, like one of those tv channels that doesn't come in.

  • @ZappaFan101

Best comment I have read in a long time

  • @ZappaFan101 i think he was making a joke about how you cant see the guy playing and it looks like a floating bass with hands.

  • @RJRomanBass

Ummm.... yeah. I thought that was kinna obvious. You didn't think I was being serious did you?

  • @ZappaFan101 i didnt, it just didnt seem like you understood what he meant.

  • @bassmajor

Congratulations because its the only lower 4 strings that actually register (musically) in the bass pitch. Dumbass kid.

  • @SwirlyBrokenHearts

and what's the point to that ?

I hate how people always have to get offensive in order to get their point made. Shows quite well what world we're living in.

I just made my point clear using a rhethorical question and no offensive terms at all and at some point there's always someone (usually fanboys) going like "dumbass", "lol stfu and gtho"....

I'm not shure this is the level we want to be reduced to.

    Still, Merry Christmas!

  • @bassmajor

rofl as if your more sophisticated than your counterparts................k then i guess you have fairpoint .................

  • @thecrashinghighways

A yea, he uses the low F# which the human ear can barely make out as a note at all and the rest is just 4 string stuff

  • why is the fretboard so unco?

  • @BassGuitarGuy128 What sort of crazy ass scale lenghths do you have??lol

  • i counted to 27 frets before they started to merge together :D

  • Well we certainly have quite a few uncultivated philistines commenting on this page don't we? Bruce Campbell plays very well.

  • @TechSmack ...touching ace?

  • @TwoCows23 nope not that spelling of bass

  • @TechSmack Pronunciation though.

  • next time touch my deck

  • OMG that's not a bass! That's half a tree with strings on it!

  • @bassmajor

Probably the part where he's rocking out, and the part where it's America and he can do what he wants.

  • @bassmajor At about 0:27

  • @Digitbig

    what?

he's playing a pattern on like the the first 5 strings

  • @bassmajor he does alot. he just dpesnt use it primarily.

  • hew you need more strings on there=all the way up to the violin range=and clar down to the subsonic deisel range man=lets sar arouns tem more or so=well givi it some thought

  • he made the beginning sound so epic. "THIS IS TOUCHING BASS"

  • victor wooten can play this shit just with 4 strings and one hand

  • Comment removed

  • it reminds me of primus for some reason

  • OH MY GOD! What is this monster?! o_O
