If Jamerson, Clarke, Wooten, Bootsy and all those other bass gods can kill it on 4 strings, 4 is good enough for me. This guy has zero feel and too many strings. he has a far bigger possible range but can do anything interesting with it
i love watching other bass players play their instruments. I can see their different play styles and try to learn different techniques they use for picking and stuff. like the use of different fingers and hand movements and things... i think bass is a fantastic wide ranged instrument! BASS LOVE!
I can't be the only one that sees the idiocy of all these people commenting on him not using the extra strings? Just because you have an instrument with a huge range doesn't mean its always right to use that range for every piece.
no offense, but that was a pretty standard practice routine using octaves. In honesty, it sounded cheesy, you could do soooo much more with that bass and your talent man...
@scottford1987 You will also never see them try to defy or limit an instruments reach and sound with a string count. A bass is not a bass because of it's string count. There were many 4 string guitars that were around long before basses that were not called basses. Your statement was incorect and i feel sorry for the way your mind works. (Yea i probably made some typos)
If we asked an artist why he used so many colors for his painting, and a drummer why he uses so many cymbals and this guy why he uses so many strings; the answer would be the same...because its my business!
If it wasn't for people like him, all us musicians would be doing the same boring thing.
Perhaps he could've done this on 4 strings, but it would've resulted in a very odd tuning I think.
The reason he plays this on a 9 string bass is so he can play regular 4/5 string stuff, but also be able to hit the higher and lower notes without having to resort to some odd tuning. That's the reason I like 6 string basses.. you can play the regular stuff, and then some more (without too much of a hassle).
@redgibson1 how does it make this pointless? it's called a different style of playing this guy is actually playing funk the other guy is copying another persons theme for a video game, and the amount of strings doesn't matter,(the guy who did super maro bros only use 7 or 8 strings, not all 11)
it's the player in the end, and that guy who did super mario bros, i don't see him writing any of his own material so bottom line this guy is a way better player.
@SubZ305 Didn't give crap. Ofc 9 strings are awesome and offer much more than 4 strings. I know that. I'd never wanted to give crap because I know that this guy is really talented!
@PrimusSucksOnThis it's because every string has an different scale (I think between 32" and 34"). the thinnest strings have the shortest scale, the thickest the longest. and that's why the frets were put on that way
Then you obviously know nothing of bass. Not belittling the 4 string bass, but the 5 and 6 strings just give you so much more to work with. Bass isn't just DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN over and over again, you know.
@Savior94 you think, i say you are wrong. i would never go back to a 4 string and trust me i have owned many 4 strings including a 1977 Kramer flying v with the metal neck i got rid of that heavy bastard. i now play a carvin lb76 ^string but to me i have to have more strings. i can do more with the guitar with the addtion of strings
I hate ppl who hate players with a bass that has a lot of strings.
I mean, let 'em enjoy their 9 stringed bass, if u don't need it don't buy it just don't act like an ass because these guys probably have plenty of skills on a regular 4 stringed bass too. probably enough to knock most of u ass-holes out.
@Jamiewaldie1992 Yeah, I understand what you mean, but the whole point of ETR is to go lower (or higher), so it makes sense that people enjoy focusing on the new strings that are put in place. I see both sides here but I guess the point I'm trying to make here is just that it's really nothing worth getting worked up over.
Most of you hacks that post negative comments don't have links to your wonderful music....and you can't spell either. Morons. (Good job on the bass :)
@wietx3 because that is a multi scale instrument and when the neck has to be that long cause of the SUPER low tuning the angled frets help with the position on the neck of each note. Thats about as simple as i can make it but its only for 8 and 9 string guitars/basses for the majority of the time but some 7s have them
@CarnalFearAZ ok thanks mate i thought it had something to do with that although i was put of because 8 string guitars don't have that but then again this ain't a guitar:P:p
@lukelittle82 doesnt matter if he was using only 4, he is playing in the tuning of a 9 string anyways which is still a feat of its own, if i were to attempt picking one of those bad boys up i wudnt no wat the fuck to do
This guy is obviously a skilled bassist but it just sounds like shit. 5 strings are enough, anything more is just overdoing it. Look how well Marcus Miller and Flea are at bass and they only have 4 strings to work with.
@BassGuy128 You're commenting that you only need 4-5 strings to make you a skillful bassist, with Flea as an example! Hahahaaaaa, he's bollocks! Colid Edwin's a better example, as is John Myung... fuck!
@Natejitsu Think about it this way.A nine string bass is a bass and a guitar in one.Minus one string. If you can play each one separtated, why not both together?Of course noone can play a massive chord on this the traditional way,but you can tap on it like a Chapman Stick. In the near furture someone will show the musical community the FULL potential of this ERB(Extended Range Bass). And then it will be accepted big time.
@Natejitsu It remains for the player to make it practical.Guitarist Tosin Abasi(with Animals As Leaders) shows us the potential of the 8 string guitar.Up until his debut most just used the lower strings of the 8 string. He shows us the potential of a given instrument previously deemed useless by the masses.
@californiaskunk That's what I used to think too. Then I got bored with my bass, but since I can't just add strings to it, and I can't afford a new bass, I ripped the frets out. lol, one of the best decisions I've ever made.
And more strings are necessary when bass has a more central role. Too many people just mimick what the guitar is doing only using the root note of a chord, but more proficient bassists could easily take advantage of a few extra strings.
@californiaskunk Because we're not all trying to play the same music. Some are trying to accomplish something different from your goal. That's why there is different music genres.Although I do think that maybe he should have played something that shows the full capability of the instrument. Then it might not have incurred so much venom.
@bassmajor Not to mention some people just like the feel and sound of extended range instruments. I have a friend who only uses seven string guitars even though most of his stuff is in E just because he feels weird playing on a slimmer fretboard.
yes true indeed, and I'm saying nothing against that. I like the feel of 6 string basses myself and certainly I dont' wanted my initial comment to be rated that high :D
