  • I bought this on steam only to have it not work on my computer. Anyone know a way to get it to work on windows 7?

  • @Smullet90 Download it for free and use DOSbox to emulate it for Windows 3.1, DOSbox is free. This is a freeware game, that they make you pay for it is pretty pathetic. Seriously, never give Steam a dollar, they are the SOPA of videogames.

  • @TheRhinehart86

I don't think it's a freeware game, but since I have bought it I won't feel too bad about downloading it :P At least then I know it will work O.o

  • @Smullet90 Put the game into like C:/KQ

Install dosbox, run dosbox and type

    mount c c:/

    c:

    cd kq

"name of .exe file" (startup file)

that should run the game nicely

    alt+for fullscreen

  • @Haku1234567890

Hey awesome man I'll try that, thanks!

  • wow! I was so into these games. It was so much fun.

  • REMAKE IS WAY BETTER

  • These days developers spend too much memory making "revolutionary" graphics and sometimes end up being crappy games. Sure, I like good graphics but thats not what I look for when I go to buy a game

  • This game helped me learn to read and write....and TYPE..BAM!

  • ummm, why is there a fire dragon in an underwater cave?! I've been playing this game for years and i only JUST noticed that XD wow i'm lame.

  • just epic

  • Sierra was making the best games at that period

  • Gods,i wasn't even born when people were alreadyplaying this for year's. Epic game for that time.

  • GREENSLEEVES!

  • Geez! I haven't played this game in. . .what decade is this now? Ahh, memories. Cool. TY. :-}

  • Freakin goodness!!! I've been trying to remember the name of this game for years so that I could download it! YouTube is ruler of the kingdom of nostalgia!!!

  • A Movie series of the first five games should be in order

  • I remember playing this my senior year of high school in 87 in computer lit class.

  • And how could I forget police quest

  • What great memories,, this, hero, and space quest, loved em all!

  • gawd, the music intro... hurry press ANY KEY to continue!

  • @deekay744 The music intro is awesome.

  • Love it!

  • sweet he got the ring from LOTR from that elf

  • I learned how to read using commands from text parser games like this. I also learned problem solving skills...to an extent. There's no way in hell I would have figured out the gnome's name was spelled with a backwards alphabet (Ifnkovhgroghprm)!

  • I played this on an orange screen, what was it vga?

my pc in that time weighted a ton and had a 16mb turbo button. Oh and when I printed something the whole table wiggled. Great times, still love the game.

  • games in the old days taught kids 2 read games today teach them how to shoot guns.

  • Ocean escape

  • LOL! I use to play this game with my dad. XD Use to love this game very much.

  • if kids now a days think graphics suck they need to look back on how games were made in the 70's 80's

  • autsch!!!

  • i luved this game!! i hope i can find it again so i can buy it!! :)

  • @jelliejam1 I has King's quest 1 i will give it to you free over email if you want

  • @jelliejam1 Download it.

  • Wow this game scared the crap of me when I was a kid! Talk about an unforgiving game!

  • So, the old woman died just because she thought that there was a highwayman in her house and, being weak and fragile, decided to pull some empty threats. Little did she know that she would be thrown into the hellish oven.

Life was really brutal in the Middle Ages.

  • i was scared of the troll when I was a little kid

  • classics are the best!!!!

  • Looks like the world's first open world game. Several decades before the GTA series made that stuff popular. Amazing.

  • reminds me of stormwind

  • I learned English playing this game with a dictionary.

  • Awesome.

  • can anyone please tell me the name of the song at the begining of KING`s quest

  • @FCKundo I beleive it is greensleeves.

  • @FCKundo greensleeves

  • I LOVED this game as a kid. Made me the nerd I am today. :)

  • hey, guys... just so you know, some guys from AGD interactive studios released a new version of king's quest with updated graphics, music and voice and it's free for download on their website.. just google it up, it's really worth it.

  • >kill woodcutter rape wife

  • truely, an awfel game when it comes to graphics, but hey, this has to be one of the Best games out there during its time..... i played kings quest all the way to 3 and i loved all of them.

  • what does the gnome's name mean? ifnkovhgroghprm???

  • @shannonmudblood

The gnome's name, ifnkovhgroghprm, is in fact a varient of the original name Rumplestiltskin from the well-known fairy tale of the same name.

Since common superstition dictates that spelling or speaking someone's name backwards will break any spell that they have put on you, "ifnkovhgroghprm" is obtained by picking the original placements of the letters in Rumplestiltskin from a BACKWARDS Alphabet. ("R" being the 9th-last letter, gets replaced with "i", the 9th first letter)

  • Why there's no HD? damn... that sucks!

  • AWESOME!

I was just talking to my kid about this game because I loved it when I was little. He totally wants to play it!

  • the rumpelstilzkin backwards puzzle scarred me for life.... couldn't finish without a guide....

  • game is still epic

  • Wooooow.....I remember this game!

They had this and Space Quest at my Day Care when I was in 2nd-5th grade!

Everyone played the game to see who could figure out how to beat it first. Whoever beat the game first was one of the smartest people in the Day Care XDDD

    That was, like, in 1999 or something! O.o;

  • @LordxxAxelxxLover by 1999 this game was already about 15 years old

  • @shaun3701 ...You're probably right...But they were really old computers 'cause I certainly remember playing this ^^;

  • why dont they make games like these these days ? storylines great for the game. very entertaining

  • can someone answer me this does this game have a giant beanstalk in it and rumple stilt skin

  • wow i downloded this game 2 my computer and it was no were near this crappy quality

  • @jsamue12 you must have DL'd the VGA remake of it, this is the original EGA version.

  • @jchase1970 oh

  • i had this game on my first computer i ever had when i was about 12 and i couldnt figure it all out. like the trolls name ifnkovhgroghprm haha does it just have to be a certain amount of letters or something? it was a fun game tho i always wasted my dagger on the goat and it says you have no use for it anymore lol

  • He's no king, he doesn't dress like a king, he doesn't smell like a king, and he's certainly not ON FIRE like a..... oops, wrong game :P

  • nice, dude. nice.... although that site has been down for quite awhile.. well, not DOWN, per say but it hasnt gotten anything new in months.

  • @Kriptoeyem yeah, I noticed that too, shame. I wonder what's up

  • Ah, memories on playing on my dad's Televideo computer!

  • Wait a sec. Something's wrong here. That says 1987 on the screen. I played this game in 1983 or 84 when I was between the 3rd and 4th grade :) Is this a re-released version or something? Weird!

  • I loved that game as a child wow good times

  • @13Juliee Look at the year on it. It's way off. In 1987 I was in the 6th grade going to the 7th. I played this game when I was in the 3rd grade after my Mom got her first IBM for work :) Strange...

  • The game that forever changed computer games.

  • i remember i would always type swears in these games.. and nothing would happen lol

  • that's a puny dragon compared toe the one i saw. it took the entire cave.

  • miss this game so much. Wish they would make a updated Kings quest for a console.

  • @Augusttalok they have for snes part 5

  • If you played this on DOSBox, you should have used Tandy/PCjr sound rather than the regular PC sound ;). Since it's showing 16-colors you were probably using the PCjr version of KQ1 anyway.

I had the original PCjr boot loader version of KQ1 back in the day and, since Tandy graphics/3-voice sound were identical to the PCjr, it worked great on my ol' Tandy 1000. As mentioned, it works on DOSBox the same.

  • BTW, I see some think this game came out in '87, the one that is present in the KQ Collection (1994), which I also have, but the original game came out on PCjr in '83, then the rest of the PC-compatible market in '84, which is when I bought the PCjr version with my brand new T1000.

  • @osseealex how did you get that though. never figured that out

  • @cfG21 way back in the day a friend told me the gnome's name was rumplestiltstkin. as a child i was into 'codes' ('reverse alphabet' being the most common in children's books such as graeme base's 'the eleventh hour')

  • Comment removed

  • Way cool. Used to love this game.

  • Man this is so nostalgic

  • whomever played this in 1987 must've been rich.

  • What's the song at the beginning called?

  • greensleves

  • looks so easy today, when i was a munchkin it was so hard to get around...

  • hahaha omg i cant believe this i used to have this like 15 years ago

  • I have a different version.

  • Graham back in the day :)

  • Why the hell do they have a Christian song for an intro track? ('What child is this')

  • Greensleeves is a traditional English folk song.

  • ...what a beautiful innocent game...

  • this game looks good where can i down load it

  • What comes back to me is the one thing we all took for granted, and few of us remember:

    DOS

  • omg i remember playing this on my old cga computer as a kid, games came in giant floppy disks LOL

  • All this game needs is some epic music and BOOM! a new ps3 game. :)Seriously for its time its very cool rpg...

  • yeah i agree lol

  • When I was a kid I accidentally killed the goat with the Dagger.

  • ha aha ha aha yeah and me

  • I have no idea how anyone could guess the gnomes name. IFNKOVHGROGHPRM???

  • The gnome's name is RUMPLESTILTSKIN however the note beside the witch's bed reads "Sometimes it is wise to think backwards."

    ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

    ZYXWVUTSRQPONMLKJIHGFEDCBA

    Substituting letters results in IFNKOVHGROGHPRM.

  • This game was out before 1987. I remember playing it after I watched the movie Back To The Future. I think over time information gets messed up along with chronology of years. Either that or this is a re-issue of the game in 1987.

  • Who owned the goat?

  • I thought the gnomes name was Nikstlitselpmur, Rumplestiltskin spelled backwards

  • It was different in the original, for some reason based on the translation or something.

  • The original puzzle involving a reversed alphabet substitution of letters, was later deemed too hard and was subsequently simplified.

  • I played this game when I was about 5 years old and my dad wrote a whole world map for me and wrote down the english words for me that I needed. So that's how I learned my first english words. And when I was about 10 years I finally finished the game on my own without any guides or walktroughs.

  • @brutolf dude, I played this when I was probably that old too and I thought it was the hardest game ever (well, I guess it takes some guess work) but for years Ive been trying to remember what game it was and finally found it..man that brings back memories. being scared shitless about the witch and stuff, and falling in that river since I couldnt control it that well..

  • @TheAcesShow I always had "swim" typed when walking in frames with water in case I would fall in. I couldn't type so fast when I was that young so I drowned sometimes.

The most satisfying by finish the game was that not even my dad had made it so I was the first. The witch was scary.

  • @brutolf

That's how I learned English too, except that nobody wrote anything down for me :P. Police Quest also learned me how to speak english.

  • @brutolf

Sounds like you have a good dad.

  • We used to call the goat "wiggle butt" when we were kids because of the way he looked when he walked away from you.

  • haha lol! ;D;D

  • its look like the levels are made in paint?

  • you realize this game is easily 20 years old right...?

look at mario from 1984...they were the same level of detail

  • This game was made before Paint (which was first included with Windows 1.0, released in 1985).

  • eurgh. the theme song nearly made my head explode. sounds way better on scummvm

  • It's "Greensleeves". My brother used to play it on his guitar when we were younger.

  • I hated that dang bridge at the beginning. That damn angle always put me in the moat.

  • Greensleeves was my favorite song for a very long time because of this game, which I started playing as a little kid. It's amazing how spellbinding those games were... not much in the graphics or sound department, but I swear they held my attention and kept me on the edge of my seat a whole lot better than alot of this modern graphics intensive junk.

  • 利害這遊戲也能玩至此

  • lol! i got this game from my local charity shop today! only £1(i got the 2nd and 3rd for a £1 each as well).

  • What? You finished the game in 20 minutes? I have 4 KQ videos in my play through totaling about 15 minutes and all I got was the lousy carrot.

  • these games were so hard, i remember playing this so much when i was a kid

Kids these days wouldnt have a shit show of completing them

  • the beggining made my ears bleed

  • haha dig the rendition of greensleeves very romantic

  • Hilarious how it starts with greensleeves. Did they just grab any random song for title screen music?

  • I had always loved this game, and still kick myself for loosing the kings quest collection :(

  • They just rerleased it a couple of years ago. I was able to find a few copies still around at somem game stores. Bought one for my wife. Do a search of local gamestores or even some online searching. This game is still around. Although you'll need an xp operating system. It doesn't work well on vista if at all.

  • Good thing my laptop still runs on xp. Thanks man. Yea, I think if i look online, i should be able to find it, or if I go through my boxes of stuff, ill be able to find it, lol

  • So if King's Quest is in some crazy fantasy land, with no connections to reality, how does the witch have Swiss cheese? There's no Switzerland is there?

  • I played this game when I was a kid. What do i need to play it now?

  • What on earth did you say to that gnome? :O

  • Back in the day, Sierra had puzzles and trick questions mingled throughout their adventure games, the answers to which were located in the manual that was sold with the product. This was one such instance, a form of copy protection to guard against illegal sharing of the software. Do I ever remember playing this game... one of the fondest memories of my childhood, believe it or not. I never forgot the "Greensleves" theme - for it's time, amazing creation.

  • Ah, I see... I should have remembered that you needed the hint book for that one, seeing as I read all the hint books for these games over and over as a child, but you know, you can't remember EVERYTHING. ;)

  • Actually, you COULD figure it out without any manual/hint book...

Rumpelstiltskin is the obvious first guess. If you read the note from the witch, it says something like "sometimes it is helpful to think backwards." But even if you reverse Rumpelstiltskin to Nikstlitslepmur, this still isn't right. You have to substitute the letter A for the letter Z, B for Y, and so on, leaving you with: Ifnkovhgroghprm.

  • Oh yeah, Real ****ing simple.

  • the graphic sucks but a nice game :)

  • hehe i remember playing this with mah gramps when i waz a litle kid and umm this pipe game with a dinosaur u have to defete or w/e

  • Wow. This looks like it could be ported to the Atari 2600. Or maybe the 5200.

  • I played this for Apple years ago and when I looked into the magic mirror and it said it saw me as king, I tossed myself into the moat to be eaten just to disprove the game.

  • Lol that's brilliant, sounds like the smart-assed kinda thing i'd do. Bravo!

  • Oh man I so remember playing this!

  • where can i download this for free?

  • hey manaray10-i downloaded today from a website called abandonia

  • How can I run this game on my PC? any help ... not the new VGA one.

  • this game looks alright. when does it come out?

  • It was released 24 years ago.

  • really??? the graphics look so real I thought it must be a modern game

  • When I played this game, my crappy computer only had 4-color CGA graphics. I'm amazed I put up with that. Guess I didn't know any better.

  • Comment removed

  • With the early (boot loader) version of this game you speak of, if you plugged your 4-color CGA computer's composite video output into a color TV or color composite monitor, you'd actually get 16-color graphics - refer to the King's Quest Wikipedia page for more info.

  • I used to play these games with my dad when I was a little kid. I think Kings Quest four is the best one of them all. Instead of playing as Graham you play as his sister. Great game! I've beaten them all multiple times, space quest as well. Thanks for posting:)

  • Lol reminds me so much of Peasant's Quest.

  • they put so much thought into this game. i mean seriosly, the kings quest games require alot of strategy. in my personal opinion, the kings quest games kick the shit out of games these days.

  • Incredible to watch. Remember I never finished any of these classic games without the hints...

  • I have the VGA version, where can I get the non-vga version, I mean the one which you can type text to progress.

  • Both earlier versions were made by Sierra, and if you can find the King's Quest Collector's Edition CD, you can play them. You'll need DOSBox to play them since they run in DOS. I did a Let's Play on the VGA version if you are interested in watching.

  • there are clues to guess the gnome's name...it's a backwards alphabet (A=Z, B=Y, etc.) and when you guess the gnome's name wrong he sort of gives you a hint. honestly though, it's a bit obscure of a puzzle to figure out.

  • You can also reverse the spelling of his name, not just the letters.

  • this is where computership started for me and many others :)

  • my first game, but i was like 4 or 5 and was scared of those crocodiles :P

  • I was sooo scared of the witch.

  • How the hell did you figure out the gnome's name? O_O

  • if you go to the witches house. ( when shes not home of course) and you look at the table it says something about reverse. and the gnomes name is rumpelstiltskin. but its acturlly... nikstlitslepmur. DUH!!!

  • haha i have the collectors edition which comes with all of them, the remakes for 1 and 2 anddd those 3 other games roberta made..ehm Wizard and someting, something about an Astronaught and another one called Mystery House

    lol gotta love it

  • is there any clue in the game about his name being rumplestiltskin in reverse order? Or else, how the hell is anyone meant to figure that out?

  • yes. in the witches house there is a note, saying something reverse.

  • yes there is lol. if you go in the witches house.. on the table next to her bed there is a note.. idk if it is inside of the table but theres a note. and it says something about reverse.

  • You know, I love these games and I have 2,3,5 and 7. I love 7 the best for the goar lover in me but I love all the rest because it is so "nerdy" hehe

Can anyone tell me if its true, that they are coming out with a new one? :o

  • What is the name of the song as the very start of this video? i have heard this all over the place in all my movies what is the name of this old song?
