Beautiful version of a beautiful song! Sure love Don's voice and spirit, he truly makes me feel better about life whenever I'm down and listen to one of his songs!
Out of all the country music legends, living & dead, Don is the one I would most like to sit down with over a cup of coffee & just shoot the breeze. He sure comes across as the most laid back, friendly guy imaginable. And from the lyrics this man has written, you KNOW he has a poets soul.
I'm 11 and other than the birth and ring etc this song makes me think of my passed aunt aunt and my dad,my aunt said I was her favorite and she loved me,those were the last words she said to me, I was the last one to see her and she really was my best friend R.I.P auntie-3
<3 <3 <3 Who couldn't possibly love this?? I adore the the fact that Don allows his audience to finish the song for him, and the way that he lovingly looks onward as if it were the very 1st time he'd ever heard it. He appears to have tears welled up in his eyes at the end. The way that he says "Ah, that's so pretty" just absolutely melts my heart. What a beautiful and ever so talented man. When I heard this song with its beautiful lyrics for the first time, I happened to meet my future wife for the fist time only a couple of days earlier. I had the feeling that this song was being played for the two of us. And ever since this is our song. When my wife needs comfort, I play it for her, and then she feels allright again.
This song is so special to me. I dedicate it to my late husband, Jackie, who my anchor in life's ocean and my best friend. I will always love you, Papa Jack.
I had a shitty upbringing as a kid, but I would listen to this and think that God is there and gives me hope and a 'reason' to go on. Now as an adult this song is still an encouragement. Thank God for Don and his faith and strong warm voice!
I went to see Don a few years ago and my heart was broke when I heard he was retiring.I got the good news he is coming back to wheeling Wv and my heart sang with joy.He is a great singer,no flash just great singing that soothes the soul.

@hrvo6 I made this comment yesterday. It has become a rock/pop/county mix with maybe a slide guitar and a fiddle on occasion. I guess that makes it more appealing to more people.
@hrvo6 Whoa, whoa, not so fast. Don't condemn everyone for the mistakes of a few. Like most music, country is constantly in flux & evolving. Remember 80's "Pop" country? Most was little more than "easy listening" w/a fiddle&steel guitar added or left out. Well, now's the same way. When Shania started, many said, "it ain't country!" Now you have Kid Rocks who TRY country for $. Some may say this song ain't either, 'cause it don't sound like Hank Williams. Let's live & let live? Plentya room.
@slowpoke4851 I respectively differ. I usta say the same thing as a crotchedy old geezer, but right after that, someone like Kenny Chesney or Brad Paisley would hit one out of the park. & what about Geo. Straight;AlanJackson;Tim McGraw;TobyKeith;Darryl Worley;Reba;Taylor Swift;Carry U.;MirandaL;RascalFlats, etc.... No, country don't have any shortage of talent. We just hafta admit the times they're achangin' & accept what comes or just turn the station if we don't like what they're playin'.
@StevieB1362 slowpoke--you are right things do change--sometimes the change for the better or the worse..This time as far as i am concerned it changed for the worse--For example all lyrics and melodies sound the same-There is no feelings or stories in songs anymore--In fact i cant understand a word they are even saying--And i always thought a woman was sexy--not a tractor lol--But how about Merle Haggard being tabbed by major newspapers as the Frank Sinatra of country music? Speaks for itself.
There are songs which don't need to be so long to play and there are songs which when you listen to it the first time you love it that is how Don Williams songs are. Great clip of Don Williams singing one of his most memorable songs! Thank you every much for this great song.
This guy makes me cry every time I hear him, and I'm definitely a man's man! Loved him at 14 - when being a fan of country music made you a figure of fun - and still do nearly 30 years later. Don Williams - simply the best.
TRUE country music. Not that stuff they have out today, it's ashame where today's so called "country" music led to but at least we have this! Don Williams, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, etc, etc. Thanks for posting. Peace
Agreed. THIS is country. If I want to hear screaming guitars and wailing vocals, I'll throw in some Zeppelin. DW is my favorite male country singer of all time. Listening to his voice is like curling up in a warm blanket by the camp fire on a cool autmn night. Thanks Don! Enjoy your retirement! You've earned it old friend.
Ya know what I like about Don Williams? He's not a "rhinestone Cowboy". He's not a flashy performer. He's not a dressy singer. Just a down home and plain sort of guy who can out perform any of the new and upcoming singers. Don, you are easy to love,
This is typical of Don's concerts, where the audience sings along word for word. These are great songs from a great guy. Real talent. Real meaning. Real life. I loved seeing him in concert. He would say, "We're real excited to be here" in such a calm southern drawl, it was hilarious. But I sure was excited to see him. Thanks Don for some of the best songs ever.
My dad passed away last week and my mum has asked this to be played at his funeral which will be very moving as they have been together since they were 15 and their now over 70. Love you so much wee dad.
I just saw George Jones and Merle Haggard last night in Corpus Christi, Texas and they were AWESOME. Don NEEDS to be up there with these guys. What would country music be WITHOUT the "Gentle Giant"?
Absolutely amazing music. My dad used to sing this without even knowing what Don Williams looked like - just listen on the radio in India on Radio Ceylon. He has passed on now and the magic is still there when I listen to this song - along with In the Shelter of Your Eyes. Go Don.
This is Goooood!!!

He refers to his wife as his bread, shelter, anchor and friend. It's good to love your wife, but it's possible to get your priorities reversed.
John 6:35: Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry...
Psalm 91:1-2: Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
Hebrews 6:19: We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.
John 15:14 You are my friends if you do what I command.

I just love Don William to here him sing because he wasn't flashy just a good old country singer.
borerun 2 years ago

Yep...I saw Don a few years ago, the year he retired. The music brought tears to my eyes. Good as it gets, a perfect show.

I just saw George Jones and Merle Haggard last night in Corpus Christi, Texas and they were AWESOME. Don NEEDS to be up there with these guys. What would country music be WITHOUT the "Gentle Giant"?
stansell1 2 years ago
Absolutely amazing music. My dad used to sing this without even knowing what Don Williams looked like - just listen on the radio in India on Radio Ceylon. He has passed on now and the magic is still there when I listen to this song - along with In the Shelter of Your Eyes. Go Don.

Country music will never be this good again. All of the soul is gone, what was once genuine is now purely pop music.

Lord you just told the truth....country music like this will never be seen again...and we are all poorer for it.
