@kreeperrock King's Landing was not and is not filmed in N.Ireland. The N.Ireland sets are used to film the northern rainy scenes etc. The parts of King's Landing was filmed in Malta in season 1 but since in season 2 the city will be featured even more they needed a more "complete" set and Dubrovnik with its preserved city walls and palaces is perfect.

There is only few places on Earth that could be used for this show, and I am proud because Dubrovnik is one of them. And no, they could not film anything and anywhere here.

Croatia has tons of well preserved mediterranean city's with gothic and renaissance buildings. obviously you never traveled trough our own coast, tho i doubt you are really a Croat. Only our isles have amazing towns, not just the coast, and entire Istria also has amazing sites. Dubrovnik was picked because of the walls but for other needs of the show we really have much to offer. Croatia may not be appropriate for winterfell but for coastal southern westeros
@stri9 So has the other coasts in Europe. For medieval setting this show wants to create I think Spain would be almost perfect. Don't get me wrong, our coast has rich history but I don't think any other place in Croatia, would be a appropriate for this show. Dubrovnik would be the only one spectacular for this show..
