Lmmfao....Having your address on your drivers liscense doesn't necessarily mean you live there??? WOW!!! People fight hard to justify the arresting of a Black man. The fact that The Professor called the campus police to come to HIS HOUSE to clarify HE LIVED THERE, should have assured THE STUPID ASS COP that he did indeed lived there.
That idiot cop was 100% wrong once he realized the professor lived there. he should have just apologized and left.
My brother is 46 BM, he gets stopped all the time in his porsche, they think he's a criminal/drugs dealer.
my brother is a retired computer analyst who does stocks & shares and property developing.
I do not believe that the woman in this vid knows what she is talking about. This kind of thing happens to black people disproportionately more than it happens to anybody else. Racial profiling will only dissapear when many white people stop thinking that they are racially superior to everybody else.
Let me explain something to you 'not so bright' black people. Yes gates was in his own home. Its the officers JOB to make sure Gates lived there.
Now this is where is gets messy: Gates gave the cop alot of shit when all he had to do was cooperate with the police and that wouls be the end of it....but No, he acted like an Ahole!!
Lucia Whalen reported to the 911 operator that she thought one man was Hispanic and did not get a good look at the other man at all. She also said that they might live there and be locked out and mentioned that she saw luggage. (Gates just arrived home from China.)
Crowley lied in his police report and claimed Whalen told him she saw two black men with backpacks enter the home.
i cant think of a better event to remind us of issac singletary and the price he paid in defense of his personal space. god bless you issac and may your sacrifice not be in vain
August eighteenth: I inadvertantly thumb you down it was my intention to thumbdown the comment that in my opinion, personally insulted the commentator. My sincere apologies! also, the black & white comment I made was merely to highlight how some people polorize an issue such as, it is presented here. I believe there is a larger issue in this matter, other than race. Thankh you!
Question if firemen are called to a residence and when they arrive to the dwelling they see smoke. However the homeowner tells the firemen that all is ok. Then what action do the firemen take?
tmotion, I'm sorry to hear that you're abused at your job, but my guess is, your life is not on the line on a daily basis. Voicing your opinion is not a crime; but interrupting an ongoing investigation of a crime scene, refusing instructions of the person in charge, and harrassing that person with unfounded charges could be construed as being disorderly. Remember, the officer was CALLED to help, he wasn't patrolling, looking for someone to pick on.
I just want to say that I get abused everyday in my line of work and I don't get to carry a gun or yell back for that matter....When cops over react like that it's because their pride is hurt and they want to control you and show you who is really boss......The real job is to enforce the laws, since when did voicing your opinion and speaking your mind be against the law.
While I'm thinking about this, how come nobody asks the obvious question? Could the prof have been agitated b/c he couldn't find his keys, had to break into his house after a long trip back from China where they treat every American with suspicion, and just over-reacted to the prescence of a white police officer b/c of his past experiences and/or profession? Is it possible that he was at fault and the cop was just doing his job? It makes sense to me, and would only mean that the prof was human.
Watch a few dozen episodes of COPS. Even in this obviously police-centric view, you'll see officers being increasingly over-assertive, then aggressive, then near-brutal when the suspect tries to assert his or her civil rights. And, the police reaction is usually inversely proportional to the suspect's vulnerability. This is disturbing to tiny old people, and rightly so. Apart from race, Prof. Gates is a tiny old person; the officer has a partner at his elbow, and reinforcements on the way.
One other thing: Gates is lucky that he has prominent connections. If it had been a reg. Joe who got arrested, the charges would not have been dropped.
Apparently Police procedure is to check the house even if the resident is there. On occasion a family member has been held hostage in another room Criminal telling Resident of home to get rid of the policemen or they will be harmed. If that had been the case the policemen would have been charged with negligence and being a racist for not caring enough to check thoroughly to ensure the safety of residents. Police must keep all options open. He was there for a break-in call not saving a Cat.
Thanks for this video. It's one of the few sober assessments of what we all know the truth to be: the cop was doing his job and the prof was not cooperative. The cop was called there to protect and serve the prof and his dwelling place, and the prof used it as an opportunity to let an officer know that he was more important than the law and didn't have to cooperate.
This particular "professor" is involved in "african american studies". As a former police officer, THAT means that these people have VERY LARGE CHIPS on their shoulders and are very uncooperative. The charges should NOT have been dropped. It implies incompetence, when in fact the arresting officer made the appropriate call.
this might look bad if you didn't see the report on how he acted and said he did do his job and he is cocky. but obama does not have the balls to say it like it is hes destroying america and is over exposed hes on the air every day and had more confrences with the people and most of the presidents already

The case of a detective with a big ego, with a badge and gun.
the 911 caller is know by police, why didnt they talked to the neighbors or the caller to identify Gates as a neighbor? BEFORE handcuffing the old man with a cane?
Racial profiling? The majority of them brought it upon their own race with choices of how they would live their lives: drug dealing, robbery, gang life, illegal migration, rape, & theft, to name a few. They should have thought of the consequences to their fellow men before engaging in activities that reinforced public opinion on their race. It's more of racial conclusion, thus it should be called CULTURAL REPRESENTATION.
Really? I never knew arguing was against the law. Police officers are trained and paid to deal with the public at some of the worst moments of their lives. If an officer can't handle being called a bad name without pulling out the "I can arrest anyone I want and waste your time whenever I want" card then perhaps they should not be working in public service.

The same question can be asked from the other direction. Did the professors race lead him to assume he was being profiled, motivating his behavior, when the officers actions would have been the same regardless of race? Did he presume all police officers profile?
Everyone these days are being profiled no matter where you go . We even profile oneself, Does profile mean the same thing as judgment?
Somehow, there is a larger "issue" to be addressed. I believe, that the real issue is this bombardment of "hyper-surveilance", being implemented on a grand scale and is frankly speaking, freaking everybody out. I suspect ,that either Mr. Gates was having a off day. Who knows, maybe the whole thing was "set up" to bring attention to all this "profiling"!
"Yo Mama" This is prehistoric and sounds like something Pastor Wright would say, This man was a professor at Harvard at one time and that is not a easy job too get, he must have been tired from travel.
Now the President, now here is the real problem of the whole story, when the President speaks people listen and what he said could easily get people killed, i would not be on the road tonight without my pistol!

All cops are blue. They lose their racial identity when they become cops or so its said. Plus, I know from studies done that black cops are just as likely as white or latino cops to engage in racial profiling. Skin color has little basis when they get a badge.
That's a lie Blacks suffer from the same type of subliminal programming that Whites do in this country. So they see Blacks as public enemy #1 just like everyone else. It's only when Blacks start to deprogram themselves of this racist brainwashing that they really become conscious of the real America!
This woman is a fool and who and why was a mic put in her face. She was not there and will we ever know the truth. Do we care? I behave around the police because I was raised to respect authority and they beat and shoot to kill!!!!
im sorry but your wrong. the fact that he has a duty to respond does not entail that he abandon the ability to understand this is the professor's house. there was no need to put cuffs on him (behind his back at that, him being disabled) and book him. a pure and simple case of abuse of power. look out for more of these, like the cop who pulled over the paramedic. everyone has a camera now and police procedures are being scrutinized
Imagine if in another incident a police officer let a robber go because the robber said it was his house. He would be fired and humiliated if it was known that he didn't even ask for ID.
ok, well perhaps im wrong.. but i wouldnt think that a robber breaking into a house would be able to produce i.d. that proved he lived there, and this cop wasnt a bad cop, but like most he has a power trip. im thinking this cop could sniff out a real burglar and i dont believe he thought gates honestly was one.that would be too dumb a mistake to make with his credentials.
Who cares if he gets offended (officer) you dont arrest someone for calling you a name. Violates our rights as citizens. There was nothing to validate that arrest no matter how you look at it.
August Eighteenth: True! If in fact Prof.Gates had established who he was prior to the arrest. I would expect that the officer could of acknowledge a misunderstanding. I think that I would be rather upset if police came on to my property and arrested me just to prove that they have ultimate authority, in order to teach me a lesson. I am well aware that some officers have a very narcissistic attitude and become somewhat sadistic towards the people... Black or White.
I'm confused about what you are concurring with. My point is the only reason charges were dropped were b/c of his connections. If he didn't have those, he would be facing court, black, white, purple, whatever race. Regular people of any color (the rest of us) cannot act like a spoiled brat and get away with it. Furthermore, if he wasn't so wrapped up in his own ideology, he would have been thankful that he was receiving help in what was, in the officer's mind, a potentially dangerous situation.
I concur to your premis that Prof.Gates apparently over reacted to the officers. It is alleged that Prof. Gates established to the "peace officer(s)"? that in fact this was his home! the officer was investgating a "buglary in progress",charged Prof. Gates after the facts. and it seems only after media attention, the "Authorities" acknowledged their mistake in violating this mans rights..and yes, I agree that had it not been for Prof.s position & media ehhm! the outcome would have been different
was the "black or white" your point? cause i never said anything about it being one race or the other...i said he police were wrong. I am not even talking about race.
and why are you thumbing down my comments. phfrankh please go get a life and stop responding to me. I thought, from the looks of the convo, I was speaking with an adult..but your not..so bye
What a stupid woman more stupid than the moronic psychopathic cop that wrongfully arrested Professor Gates. God this woman is completely nuts and a racist in my view.
Ancient Speech. That certainly changes the scenario if in fact the police had recieved the identification. I heard on a CBC report that in fact it was the neighbour who had made the call to the police.
Lmmfao....Having your address on your drivers liscense doesn't necessarily mean you live there??? WOW!!! People fight hard to justify the arresting of a Black man.
Who knows, maybe the whole thing was "set up" to bring attention to all this "profiling"!
phfrankh 2 years ago
She's only fooling herself...
And why is a foreigner without the home grown experience of US race relations even speaking on this issue?

because distance also lends objectivity

And ignorance of established history.
You can't look at the problem through a zoom lens...
History plays a big part in the reality of human reaction.
Honestly... do you think it would have gone the same way if Dr Gates was a white man?

"Yo Mama" This is prehistoric and sounds like something Pastor Wright would say, This man was a professor at Harvard at one time and that is not a easy job too get, he must have been tired from travel.
Now the President, now here is the real problem of the whole story, when the President speaks people listen and what he said could easily get people killed, i would not be on the road tonight without my pistol!

what an asinine comment. The president's comment was an intelligent and honest one. The cop acted stupidly. That's a fact.

The President does not seem too agree with you as his news conference today suggest..
How about a drink zoey, I'm done with this subject. Your house or mine?
rustyroadster09 2 years ago
All cops are blue. They lose their racial identity when they become cops or so its said. Plus, I know from studies done that black cops are just as likely as white or latino cops to engage in racial profiling. Skin color has little basis when they get a badge.
zoeymuse 2 years ago 4
That's a lie Blacks suffer from the same type of subliminal programming that Whites do in this country. So they see Blacks as public enemy #1 just like everyone else. It's only when Blacks start to deprogram themselves of this racist brainwashing that they really become conscious of the real America!

Police Officer was only doing his job.
The racist is that punk ass was louis gates

He would be fired and humiliated if it was known that he didn't even ask for ID.
wafflethug 2 years ago 2
ok, well perhaps im wrong.. but i wouldnt think that a robber breaking into a house would be able to produce i.d. that proved he lived there, and this cop wasnt a bad cop, but like most he has a power trip. im thinking this cop could sniff out a real burglar and i dont believe he thought gates honestly was one.that would be too dumb a mistake to make with his credentials.
davedoug 2 years ago
Who cares if he gets offended (officer) you dont arrest someone for calling you a name. Violates our rights as citizens. There was nothing to validate that arrest no matter how you look at it.
AugustEighteenth 2 years ago 3
Unless of course if Prof. Gates was un-controlably hostile, which in the Peace Officers authority warranted an arrest.
Both, "ehmm" professional's, I would assume could of choosen to act more cival towards each other!
phfrankh 2 years ago
If the arrest was warranted, charges wouldn't have been dropped.
AugustEighteenth 2 years ago
August Eighteenth: True! If in fact Prof.Gates had established who he was prior to the arrest. I would expect that the officer could of acknowledge a misunderstanding. I think that I would be rather upset if police came on to my property and arrested me just to prove that they have ultimate authority, in order to teach me a lesson. I am well aware that some officers have a very narcissistic attitude and become somewhat sadistic towards the people... Black or White.
phfrankh 2 years ago
did you even watch the video?
saywhatmachine 2 years ago
I'm confused about what you are concurring with. My point is the only reason charges were dropped were b/c of his connections. If he didn't have those, he would be facing court, black, white, purple, whatever race. Regular people of any color (the rest of us) cannot act like a spoiled brat and get away with it. Furthermore, if he wasn't so wrapped up in his own ideology, he would have been thankful that he was receiving help in what was, in the officer's mind, a potentially dangerous situation.
wjamflan 2 years ago
I concur to your premis that Prof.Gates apparently over reacted to the officers. It is alleged that Prof. Gates established to the "peace officer(s)"? that in fact this was his home! the officer was investgating a "buglary in progress",charged Prof. Gates after the facts. and it seems only after media attention, the "Authorities" acknowledged their mistake in violating this mans rights..and yes, I agree that had it not been for Prof.s position & media ehhm! the outcome would have been different
phfrankh 2 years ago
It was the officers who made it a dangerous situation, and I mistakenly gave you a "thumbs-up".
Beamshipcaptain 2 years ago
It's NOT illegal to act like a spoiled brat and furthermore, he was on his property and he could yell and shout as loud as he wants to an extant.
THEMONITOR72 2 years ago
was the "black or white" your point? cause i never said anything about it being one race or the other...i said he police were wrong. I am not even talking about race.
AugustEighteenth 2 years ago
and why are you thumbing down my comments. phfrankh please go get a life and stop responding to me. I thought, from the looks of the convo, I was speaking with an adult..but your not..so bye

What a stupid woman more stupid than the moronic psychopathic cop that wrongfully arrested Professor Gates. God this woman is completely nuts and a racist in my view.
Skyman46 2 years ago 2
Very true. Gates showed them his ID and proved that he belonged in that residence.
AncientSpeech 2 years ago
Ancient Speech. That certainly changes the scenario if in fact the police had recieved the identification. I heard on a CBC report that in fact it was the neighbour who had made the call to the police.
