Watched this film last week with my friends. Realized they were talking about 2013.. And we noticed those ... old big TV-screens and we were all like "LOL".
Little did Snake Plissken know that atomic power plants require electricity to keep running and prevent a meltdown... There are currently over 300 atomic power plants in activity on our planet... And he shuts them down.
absolutely the most inspirational thing i have ever seen. brings me to tears half the time and gives me chills every single time. if ever such a device existed i would do the same thing without a moment's thought.
@DimbalaH watch "they live" ... in my opinion is his best movie!! btw this scene is a masterpiece in movie history, Plissken smoked the American Spirit in just one cigarette, pure orgasm =) ... our world sucks and it's our fault, if we cannot be human we will be beast: welcome to human race! pure truth...
@SoulStorm892 They live! Frikin classic, they should remake that one with today's CGI and effects. John Carpenter is a visionary and a man b4 his time. Some say, an insider who is exposing the goals and agenda of the NWO and the powers that be.
@ricogoldstar I'm scared about CGI, it ruined sci-fi movies focusing on action =(. In any case i agree with you, They Live deserves a remake, a more modern reading of our world behind that black glasses... what a amazing scene when they're beating for wearing glasses... visionary and immortal director =))
Why does this movie get shit on? Three words...Snake Plissken surfing. Carpenter is the man but L.A. is a grab bag of awesome snake and then that kind of crap.
@VenomShock I look at this movie in this way: If Escape from New York was gritty, film-noir like... it was because it was SET in New York. Escape from L.A. was a bit hokey, and didn't take itself seriously... because it was set in L.A. I've lived in both cities, and they both fit the settings to a "T". So no, this film wasn't bad at all, the film was like the city it was set in.
@aquasaber That's an interesting way of looking at things. One could also look at the movies that typically take place in these settings. It seems like L.A is the setting for the more bombastic type films, whilst New York is usually home to the grittier and more serious films.
But yeah, I just love the hell out of this movie. I could tell that John Carpenter was really just having a lot of fun with it, and that translated through. I enjoyed the whole deal (actually more-so than the first).
It really is a shame that Carpenter's films get the short end of the stick. Then again, do we really want John Carpenter to be overrated? Hell, I'm an aspiring screenwriter and I worship Carpenter's material (mostly his work with Kurt). I'd rather be in the same cult-status category as JC, than be compared to some overblown hack like Michael Bay
cant believe after playing the metal gear solid games ive never watched this movie, well thats about to change, this seems like such an awesome movie cant believe its from 81
While the sequel wasn't nearly as good as the first "Escape from" movie...it's still got Snake freakin' Plissken in it, which is enough to make it one of the best movies out there.
@jackofblades94 how the hell is plissken a solid snake wannabe when hideo kojima admitted that snake was inspired by Carpenter's Snake Plissken/Kurt Russell? Dont you know that Snake plissken's character came about in the first escape from new york movie in 1981. Metal Gear came out in 1987. Metal Gear solid came out in 1998. Escape from la in 96. Dumbass!
@ssj3kazuya ok, first of all, can you actually provide me with a link or video where kojima said that? if not, argument invalid. even if he did...we obviously know the winner here, so you can shut your stinky mouth sir, and enjoy your no-plot movies while you are at it :).
second, who gives a FUCK if that snake wannabe came first than metal gear? solid snake is THE snake,
know why? read the fucking metal gear solid saga plot. do i need to say more? i think not...
"Hideo Kojima identified Escape From New York and James Bond films as the primary sources of inspiration for the storylines and gameplay of the Metal Gear series. Popular videogame director Hideo Kojima has referred to the movie frequently as an influence on his work, in particular the Metal Gear series. The character Solid Snake is strongly based on Snake Plissken."
Although it's not a perfect film I love it for the fact it's close to being the ultimate anti-authority film made by a mainstream studio. Carpenter has stated he is a short-term pessimist but a long-term optimist and that shines through particularly with what is one of the best endings ever, Snake hits the re-set button. This film is Carpenter and Russell's ultimate finger up at bullshit government and authority and when Snake stares down the camera and blows out that match it ROCKS!
@aolthis He is even the creater of the meatal solid games admitted that he was inspired by escape of newyork movie. If you look at the games of metal gear solid you will find references from the movie. But the games themselves are great because of this.
@savagegalt dude, chill. inspiration yes. homicide no. yeah yeah, i know, you're gonna call me all sorts of names. if you're going to fight, fight for something WORTH fighting for. otherwise, shut the fuck up, cuz i doubt you ever survived the military. the veterans are going to take control. and MAYBE someone will have some goddamn sense.
Not sure how you reconcile literally misstating someone's proposal (re: homicide...never stated in the comment) calling the person to whom you're replying who never engaged you in conversation profane names and then assuming that person has not been in the armed forces.
My friend, I genuinely hope that this behavior is not one exhibited in your real life. It is self-defeatingly antagonist and infantile.
@Zoza15 Hidejo Kojima took inspiration from Escape From New York when he made the Metal Gear games. Solid Snake even goes under the name of Plissken wile he is hiding in Metal Gear Solid 2.
