Bonzo, Bonzo, Bonzo, Bonzo... brainwashed sheep. Same kind who say "Peart, Peart, Peart, Peart". First of all, Bonham himself said that Ian Paice was a much better drummer. Which is true, if you ignore taste and look only at technical abilities, control and consistency. Ward was also much more versatile than Bonham, and didn't make half as many errors during shows as Bonham did. You can claim to enjoy a style more, but you can't say 'my god can beat up your god' when quite clearly, he cannot.
@fuitall ABSOLUTELY far under rated!!! I've dissected his style ..... He is heavily influenced through old jazz progressions --- he is phenomenal. I THINK the trouble he encountered early on with getting recognition was in the recording studio. They just set up mics in those days and recorded a gig. The intricacies of his progress are HARD TO HEAR!!! They are difficult to pull out of the mix. Even with remastering the old stuff, it is difficult to get ALL of what Bill played.
as i've gotten older i've really started to understand how truly awesome Ward was with Sabbath. the guy had an absolutely EPIC left hand and right foot, and doesn't get the credit he deserves for being a true pioneer. everyone will bring up Bonham in conversations - and rightfully so - but it's not fair to also NOT bring up Ward in the same talks.
as an aside, one must also remember that about 90% of those classic Sabbath songs he recorded, Ward was drunk as SHIT and still sounded amazing.
Best dummer....ever. Hands down, no doubt, most revolutionary, influential, and way ahead of his time. Don't believe me? Listen to Vol. 4 and you will change your mind
Aside from being one of the world's greatest rock drummers, he seems like a really down to earth cool guy. Without Bill, there would be no heavy metal.
Wow! No wonder he, to me, is the best flam player in drumming. "Hard work" is an understatement. I first heard Bill Ward playing flams on the snare and floor tom in the tune "Cornucopia", and couldn't--and still can't-- believe it. He's definitely the most underrated drummer in rock, and that is a darned shame. Listening to him describing his work outs is incredible. It just proves that you don't have to run to be in shape, 300 push-ups! Unbelievable! Mr. Ward, my hat is off to you, sir!
Bill Ward's solo albums Ward One" Along The Way and When the Bough Breaks are masterpieces, yet so unheralded. Much better than any Ozzy album post Randy Rhoads. Check them out. Thanks Bill, love your music!
@TIMOTHYSAARINEN That's life Dude !!!! but the main point, the most important is invisible , in his head ? AS BEHIND the skins, BILL 's still 20 .................
Yeah, Bill has been through a lot, both good and bad, and he has come through triumphantly. His work with Sabbath will live on forever and his solo albums were brilliant. I wish more people had heard them. Bill is a good, gentle human being and the world is a better place with him in it. Very few of us age gracefully. Who wouldln't like to look 21 forever? Sadly, it's not possibe. We need to remain young in our minds. You are right about that, redtorso. My very best wishes to Bill Ward!
dude Rat Salad is sooo sick! Bill Ward's one of the best, and probably my favorite, drummers ever. Hands down. and he's actually unappreciated. You always hear about John Bonham as being one of the best but not usually bill
Hello .....Where were you when Bill Started playing drums ? The main point for a heavy metal drummer is how he sounds, howhe is playing drums , the MUSIC not the look which 's only important for teenagers or little gals ....Bill is a tue LEGEND and needs total respect !!!!!!!!!!!!
thejpfan it seems like bill ward is the ONLY metal drummer you've ever heard, he's got heart but he's extremely slow and uncreative, besides the fact that he keeps losing time, sorry to dissapoint you, but there are drummers that can do 50 times what he does with one hand, check out morgan agren and aquiles priester for a start
On Sabbaths first and second album his choice of beats were pure emotion plus he was the first drummer to have a kick drum with the low thud mixed with a 4-5 khz crack thats been common for years. You sound kind of like an idiot when you say uncreative due to the fact that any decent drummer can appreciate what he is doing...perhaps he looses time slightly or is not the fastest but the uncreative comment leads me to ask hows "your" world tour going and why does his early stuff grab so many?
I would like to see Bill Ward and Ronnie Ciago on the same stage playing two drum sets. They are both such great drummers. It is time to do another interview.
I think that Bill Ward needs to do more interviews. He is a great person with lots of great stories. Bill is a very kind and respectful person. He is a pleasure to be around. He is working on a new CD and I can't wait to hear it. He needs to do more concerts or a video that we all can see.
it's not easy to be a drummer and i've played it, too. that's why ''bill ward'' is a living legend and i saw him twice in ozzfest performances. he plays much better ''live'' than in the studio. on studio, he follows the basic part of a song as it is written.
Bill is one of the greatest rock drummer of all time. Bill's style is inimitable and incomparable. He is also a good singer and a great composer, his solo albums show this. To me Bill is not just a great drummer, but a true artist. The real artist of the band (Sabbath) with a great musical inspiration that hi reveals in his solo career.
Thanks for posting your comments on Bill Ward. He is absolutely a great and underrated drummer. Bonham, Peart, Baker, Moon, et al... all get/got the press and are worshipped. But Bill Ward and the now deceased Mitch Mitchel are both in the same league.
Bil WARD ....looks may be old ??? So what's the problem ? He is a Living LEGEND and still rocks HAAAAARRRRDDERRRRR than any drummer on the circuit !!!!!!!!
He shows no signs of being a former freak or rockstar, but it's great that he cleaned himself up. Many rehabilitated substance abusers become compulsive fitness buffs, because they channel all that neurosis into something constructive. Hey, maybe he's on a healthy diet of "Rat Salad"!
