Views that somewhat contradict the popular black and white story that seems to be very popular in the west, about only the Serbs being the bady guys, and everyone else being angels. For more realistic view of those events my recommendation goes to BBC's Death of Yugoslavia film. It is so much more comprehensive and realistic. This1 seems to be aimed on lessening role of Serbia in the Balkan wars. It is more of a propaganda than realistic film.

It presents Chetniks as 1st anti-Nazi (Anti-Fascist) force in Yugoslavia, 1st anti-Nazi force in Yugoslavia was created in Sisak region of Croatia, it consisted of mixed Serb and Croatian men. You can sell this story to Americans, British, French & Dutch, but not to Ex-Yugoslav people. True, they saved few US pilots, while video omits to say that Chetniks were killing innocent civilians, too. It also omits to say about 1980's SANU Greater Serbia project.

In America, there was not one country as such, but a commonwealth of states, therefore not too dissimilar to the Yugoslav situation. Unknown to most people, the US are still to this day a comonwealth of states, and any of them have a legal right to suseed, not that the illegal federal govt would allow it!

Slovenia and Croatia decided to invoke this right but Serbia, which controlled the army did not want to allow this.
In addition, Croatia has declared its independence 1991st (Soon was an internationally recognized State of Croatia) and the war lasted another few years. So when we have war between two internationally recognized states, civil war is the wrong term. greeting

Croatia was recognized and armed by Germany so they could continue to use it as another of their unofficial colonies, which is what Croatia is, and to destroy a strong country which Germany hates, as it hinders their plan to have a EU controlled by them. It was a one-party dictatorship in which Croats and Albanians were oppressed, and the Republic of Slovenia and Croatia were economically exploited, in fact they were the colonies of the Republic of Serbia.

It presents Chetniks as 1st anti-Nazi (Anti-Fascist) force in Yugoslavia, 1st anti-Nazi force in Yugoslavia was created in Sisak region of Croatia, it consisted of mixed Serb and Croatian men. You can sell this story to Americans, British, French & Dutch, but not to Ex-Yugoslav people. True, they saved few US pilots, while video omits to say that Chetniks were killing innocent civilians, too. It also omits to say about 1980's SANU Greater Serbia project.

Talking like there was only like 2 % of people in Slovenia for indipendence, but the truth is that over 95 % of us in SLO wanted to go away from YUG, and the reason was when Tito died, Serbs had an idea of Big Serbia and we didn't want that to happen. After all Slovenia created over 25% of BDP in YUG, so why should we in Slovenia work and Serbs would spend our money?

@Danmagorez ederal army was the Serbian army, which is operated by Belgrade. Yugoslavia was another name for a Greater Serbia. Croats broke away from Yugoslavia, the federal army tries to stop them. This is a short, if you want more info, read the book

There are many half-truths, omissions, and misinformation in this lengthy documentary, yet it's still a very good source of info about this tragedy. In the end, the question remains; Who Is Responsible? After spending 6 years in Serbia, I can answer that for you:
Everyone.
And until everyone can look inside themselves instead of looking to blame the 'other', nothing will ever change. Jugoslavia is a beautiful place, but it's also fucked-up beyond repair, I fear. I truly hope I'm wrong though.

Civil War is a nasty business...we in the USA had 600,000 killed because of ours...but we had a very good reason...ending slavery.
I just can't agree that Milosevic's desire to shut down the Slovenian magazine called Mladin was grounds that warranted a bloody civil war in Yugoslavia. Milosevic should have read the signs of the times(fall of Berlin wall and USSR)...and chilled out....then no civil war.

@EdwardRommel One mistake. The war in Yugoslavia is not a civil war. In America they were confronted members of the same nation. In Yugoslavi we had the clash of different nations that have declared their independence. (Which have been internationally recognized)

@jjsekula2 Not quite. Yugoslavia was a country at the outbreak of the war, even if artificially a joint of different former nations, therefore it war a civil war indeed. In America, there was not one country as such, but a commonwealth of states, therefore not too dissimilar to the Yugoslav situation. Unknown to most people, the US are still to this day a comonwealth of states, and any of them have a legal right to suseed, not that the illegal federal govt would allow it!

Slovenia and Croatia decided to invoke this right but Serbia, which controlled the army did not want to allow this.

@jjsekula2 If there was indeed only a commonwealth right of Secession I cannot comment more, as for the declaration of independence it's bunk. Croatia was recognized and armed by Germany so they could continue to use it as another of their unofficial colonies, which is what Croatia is, and to destroy a strong country which Germany hates, as it hinders their plan to have a EU controlled by them. If Saudi Arabia recognizes Marseilles as an free islamic state and the muslims fight the french...

@thegreatfearblog Croatia was not recognized only by Germany but also most of Europe, and soon the U.S. and the rest of the world. Yugoslavia never was a "strong country" as you say. It was a one-party dictatorship in which Croats and Albanians were oppressed, and the Republic of Slovenia and Croatia were economically exploited, in fact they were the colonies of the Republic of Serbia.
Today, most people forget that the disintegration of Yugoslavia began the total economic decay!

Just remember the arms embargo for all Yugoslav republics, leaving Croatia without weapons, while Serbia had huge amounts of weapons in the JNA (federal army) it was a clear signal for Serbia: broke the resistance in Croatia, using military force. US supports Croatia after the Srebrenica genocide and the danger that the same happens in Bihac

Most of the weapons seem to have come from there, and why? Why were the german secret services taking over the croatian s.services? My whole point is that the war should have been avoided and it wasn't because of foreign instigation. As for Srebrenica, the numbers are very debatable. Why do you trust those ridiculous high numbers?

The Croatian army was poorly armed until 1993. Just look at these clips on YouTube, you see that Croatian soldiers dressed differently, some without uniform, arms low (often only a hunting rifle), there was only easy small arms. where was huge German weapons?

Sisak ironworks began to produce guns and mines both of poor quality, dangerous for the user. My neighbor signed up to a professional army, they did not receive him a whole month because there were not enough guns ...

@thegreatfearblog war could be avoided in two ways: 1. that Serbia like the Czech republic let Republics of leaving the community through peaceful means, respecting constitutional boundaries of the Republics. 2. Serbia is keen to seize areas in Bosnia and Croatia inhabited by Serbs, if Croatia has agreed to, I believe that we would avoid the war, but that was unacceptable solution.

And of course the areas inhabited by Serbs those Serbs should have protection, under the rule of central Serbia or independently. Why would that be unacceptable? They were not "settlers" like the chinese in tibet or the protestants in nothern ireland. They had been there for generations, were mostly working people, not oppressors and should have been respected, not expelled like animals.

Wouldn't you? It turned out their fears were correct, unless you also believe the Croatian atrocities and mass murder of Krajina Serbs are fiction. And another thing that gave those serbs some rights, is that is that they didn't move there as invaders, like the muslims in the balkans. They were peasants!

Serbs in Croatia came as Turkish troops, but in the 16th century, move on to the Habsburgs side. The thing is that I have studied how great powers provoke wars for their evil purposes and Ylavia was one of those tragedies, like Iraq, the Armenian genocide and the 1st and 2nd war wars.
