This track is a mixture of the 1970 Albert Hall performance and re-recorded guitar/drums tracks done in-studio. The crowd noise was eliminated in the final mix down. Not that I am an expert or anything.
This is the studio version, not Royal Albert Hall. If you listen to the live version there's a different solo than the studio. Personally I think the live version is better, which is why Zeppelin is so good.
@petec9686 Actually, this album was released in 1982, after John Bonham died. It was their collection of songs that didn't make it on their earlier albums.
@Kashmir0109 yes, you are right. it basically means 'the end of a piece' musically. p.s. Coda's sitting right beside me listening to this song, Best dog ever.
Woah doesnt that voice sound familiar.....Robert Plants singing sounds exactly from the 1970 royal albert hall concert that they did and the first song was were gunna groove and compared this to that.....it sounds exactly the same
What's most impressive is that this song was recorded live (Royal Albert Hall, 1969). It's on the live DVD. Opening song of the show. They just cut off a lot of jamming in the middle and Page added overdubs in studio.
a lot of zep's early recorded history is kinda clouded, but i can sure picture this as the first song they ever jammed to or recorded... this may or may not be fact but they had so much energy live from 69 to 73... after that they transferred that energy to their records.... the greatest band ever, elvis in the 50's, beatles in the 60's and zep in the 70's... after that there is no clear "decade dominant" band.... ZEP RULES FOREVER....!
@milesneedham That surely isnt fact, this was one of the last songs of Led Zeppelin, Coda was their last album, taken after the death of the drummer John Bonham. ;)
@xcrazycaesarx - Coda was released after Bonzo's death to fulfill contractual obligations to the record company and is made up of various off-cuts over their career. We're gonna grove was recorded for Led Zeppelin 2 in 1969 but was never included.
@xcrazycaesarx yes i know it is from coda, the last studio album, but these songs are all from previous sessions, i had a bootleg with this exact same recording back in 74, and it was 5 yrs old then, i was just trying to say, if you know anything bout zeps beginnings, they exploded when they first jammed, this song has the energy that exemplies what i picture as one of the the 1st songs they may have exploded into back in 68...
Wanna treat ? there was a late 70's early 80's Zep cover band called Physical Graffiti, they were/are better than any other Zep cover band, these dudes even looked like them(all without wigs, fake glasses and beards poorly applyed)They make most cover bands sound cheesy and not just only the Zep ones but all the copycat bands.
When I was 14 I used to listen to this at full volume while sitting on the windowsill (4th floor). I'm not sure how my parents managed to stay sane... Maybe they liked Led Zeppelin too...
Well; for the black people that Led Zeppelin and other current bands sang their songs, i just wonder how exploited they were by white males and females of other countries off the U.S. Some blacks still sing black songs should sing white songs for their justice ! Can you imagine BB KING singing the Beatles or something unusual like that ?
Brilliant song!! Why they took so long to release it is beyond me! Mind you, they had so many other killer songs, so thank god for the best band ever!!
