  • Woaw!

  • I'm glad they completely changed Telemachus' looks. The blond one in the finished version is sexy. This one ain't. LOL.

  • mostly it looks gruesome, compared with the finished series.. but telemach's hover-vehicle looks better here i find.. it looks more simple, but more elegant, interesting and believable... the rest not so xD, i'm glad they developed this destinctive style later.. i always thougt it was inspired by franco belgian comics, rather than greek statues.. but well...

  • Telemaco looks a lot to Hayao Miyazaki productions. I think the worst design is Ulysses, that Tina Turner hairstyle is not good XD.

Thanks a lot for uploading this, it's very curious, we must respect this pilot like a jewel of peculiarity.

  • Could you possibly add English subtitles to this?

  • @Mesterius1 I could...if I spoke Japanese.

  • Yeaahhh... I guess that's what I expected to hear;) Same with me. Would be great if someone speaking Japanese could do it, though.

  • @burlearth I actually have a translated fansub of this. It's just... unfinished. I'll probably upload it, even though it's not finished.

  • So you're telling me that the Odyssey in this was a simple flying torus?

With primitive CGI, I might add, which helped it date fast.

I'm glad the final version was a vast improvement, even if they did keep some aspect of the torus in the final Odyssey design.

But using painted artwork, so it's aged well.

  • @Foebane72 It's called a pilot, a test, to sell the series, it's not the final product, and, if you look at the Ulysses 31 one series you'll see they re-used many of the CGI elements in different parts, they also used CGI elements in the opening titles and end credits.

  • @burlearth Fair enough, the CGI featured in the final series and what I see in this was great, but yes, the torus Odyssey does have an unfinished look to it.

What I like about the final version is that they toned down the exaggeration present in most anime. Like Nono, for example, in this he's almost identical to the final version, but his expressions and body language are much more exaggerated.

  • Remove the url gaps and look at the DVD section of this site for the proof:

    simonin . pagesperso-orange . fr/Ulysse31/

  • i don;t like this one i prefer the first version

  • @loufadoros20 This is the first version, it's the "pilot".

  • @burlearth This ain't the first version. the original Ulysses 31 was on before C.G animation like this was invented. i used to watch it about 20ish years ago.

  • Have you read the title? This was made before the series otherwise it wouldn't be a TEST PILOT -not for broadcast- by the Jap animators to show the French the style they were going for and ask what changes they would like. The French Ulysse 31 boxset has a booklet which states THIS PILOT was made before the series -there wouldn't be much point in making this 'test' after the series- and has the original character design sheets. CG has been since the mid-70's, some of it was reused in the series.

  • wow.

  • cgi ship or really well drawn??

  • LOL, Space Invaders sound effects in the beginning.

  • @DanAdamKOF Early CGI as are most of the asteroid/cosmic cloud FX that were reused throughout the series.

  • Really awesome to see this. Been a fan of the show since i was a kid. Thanks a lot!

  • Excellent work that man!

  • Nice to see this pilot, thanks for uploading it.

I'm glad they re-designed the characters, otherwise the cartoon may not of stood out quite as well as it did. This pilot has the same sort of look a lot of anime from that time had.

  • C'est Ulysse Crusoe lol :D
