...I agree about turning off your TV - or, if you want to benefit from some of the educational content TV has to offer, don't respond to any of the ads you see (don't buy the products/services showcased), or simply mute the ads or change the channel when they come on.
...And business is not a democracy so you cannot compare it to taxes (where citizens can elect their representatives to utilize tax revenues how they want them to). Then again, I suppose a free economy is in a sense like a democracy in the exact way that we are discussing it here you can choose whether a company will become successful or unsucessful, powerful or weak, influential or uninfluential, all by whether or not you buy their products/services...
Actually, yes, that's the most, and probably the best, that you could do. A good thing about free commerce is ample supply from numerous distributors - if Kraft is doing something that's not socially responsible then you can research a number of the other cheese companies, find one that is socially responsible, and buy from them (that mentality extended over all of the products we use would solve a lot of problems, there's no doubt about that)...
These lobbying groups and think tanks are only strong because society's sheep give them the power! They are funded off the money you spend on the products and services of the corporations that fund them! Rampant commercialism is reigning over conscious consumerism, and that is why we have all of the problems we have! Money is power in this world, and as long as you give your money to these people then you are empowering them to continue the cycle!
...As long as you, and your neighbor, and everyone else down the line are allowing themselves to be succeptible to their lies then they will succeed, regardless of how much oversight there is, or how many laws are passed to stop them. Fact is, unless everyone educates themselves to what's happening and start asking questions instead of remaining in denial about their oppression (which is their own fault!) then nothing will change.
...All that matters is that the majority of individuals who make up the public that they target are weak, and they allow themselves to be "convinced" by the rhetoric and propaganda of these types of groups (regardless of what side of the political spectrum they are on)...
"billions of dollars are being spent to convince the public..." - that sums it ALL up. Are these men wrong to do what they do? That's relative - if you ask me I will say yes, if you ask them they will say no (often ignoring the logical fallacies they build themselves up on). But it doesn't matter what they do, or say...
The Neocons control Fox and CNN at least.
