Bon Jovi as a band are simply amazing. But no matter how big part Jon is playing, Richie is still the "rock n roll" part of it. I have a feeling that if it wasn't for Richie Jon would already slide into pop, country or whatever.
Don't get me wrong, Jon is a great guy, singer and performer, but he is not "rock n roll" in a way Richie is.
I think Richie goes out with soul, while Jon keeps money counter in the back of his head. And Jon's recent philanthropic / political activism really put me off.
Richie does have success, but he is still underrated, the feel , the tone, and the melodic sensibility of the guy is amazing! and within hearing a couple of notes you can tell exactly that it's richie playing! And that's not even starting on his voice!! As much as i love Jon's voice and i'll prob get grilled for saying it, I personally think Richie's is better! There i said it. ha ha!!

I remember once Richie said that his solos aren`t showing off and they are pieces of music. He said true words. That`s why I adore him so much. He`s not trying to be a virtuoso but a true musician. He`s trying to do his own thing - create beautiful melodies( besides beauty his guitar and music has deep meaning too). I respect him so much and proud that I listen to his music everyday - and his music is great help for me too.I don`t know what else to say... Thanks Richie! You`re the man.

Richie is very similar to Keith Urban....His brilliance with the Guitar is often overshadowed by the fact that he is multi talented, he is a terriffic singer and has co-written a heap of number 1 hits....

I never realised how boring he is as a guitarist. He hasn't composed any naturally powerful riifs like ACDC or Metallica. He uses the same five chords for a song, and his solos are all the same, just a simple melody repeated over and over again. Other guitar players have versatility. Bed of Roses, Livin on a Prayer and Wanted Dead or Alive follow the same intro pattern. Steve Vai can do any solo, shred, a melody, a blues solo, a wah solo etc. Richie is just a boring guitarist.
I think you need to get your facts right before you open your mouth mate, of course Richie isn't going to throw out loads of virtuoso solos in Jovi's pop-influenced songs, because that's not what the fans are looking for. Listen to Richie's solo albums to see just what a great song writer and blues/rock guitarist he really is.
And in response to your Vai comment, I recently downloaded his discography and there are about five songs I can stand to listen to, he just shows off for the sake of showing off, none of it sounds remotely good. Sure, from a technical skill standpoint Vai kicks Richie's ass, but that's not what matters, Richie plays (yeah simple) bluesy, melodic and soulful music, and I'd rather listen to that than Vai's collection of weird sound-bites and stupid noises any day.
Vai is good when he's confined to the style of a conventional band (listen to Whitesnake's "Slip of the tongue" album), but when he's left to his own devices he just writes rubbish (he actually has a track in which he talks, using different voice filters, about masturbating, WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!?!?). Sorry about using three posts but there wasn't enough space for me to correct this idiot without.

Most of the people arguing with you aren't denying the technical skill of your mentioned virtuoso guitarists, they are indeed impressive from the standpoint of skill, but that isn't what music is about, music is an artistic medium meant to entertain, Virtuoso isn't entertaining, but Bon Jovi is, that's why they sell out 100,000+ gigs in a few days, whereas people like Vai and Batio struggle to fill small rooms.

Actually, technically he is mediocre at best. I remember a Guitar World interview where Jon talked openly about Richie not being a "Van Halen" or anything. Nonetheless, I think his soulful phrasing combined with background (and even lead) singing more than makes up for any of the technical issues. And this is coming from somebody who started playing guitar because of Sambora.
There's no reason to feel offended for him. I'm sure the man doesn't need you or anyone defending him on youtube. :)

Spankki, actually if you ever saw Skid Row interviews from back in the day, Dave Sabo used to rave about Richie quite a bit, and would say things like have been said here, e.g. "The guy just burns live, you've really got to see him live." "He puts so much soul into his playing." So there's a pro that says it loud and proud, and you're right, technically he's not steve vai, but he's sold a hella lot more albulms too. It just sounds good and feels good.
dragonlee, you need some help my friend, Wolfmother is as bad as these guys buy your stanrd of technical playing, maybe worse, they had great attitude, but common, they were not hard songs technically speaking. If you check out satc giving lessons on youtube, you will ntoice he places a lot of emphaiss on feel actually, despite being highly technically competent. Plus BB king, terrible technichan, great musician, the two don't neccessarily go hand in hand. If you donlt like sambora, why watch?

Sambora has lived the dream- had a load of smash hit records, albums, stadium tours, woman, wine, drugs....you name it! he's been a rock star-all the while being a normal guy from Jersey.
you don't get to his level without talent-more importantly he's written songs that resonate with people! hence his mega-stardom.
and if you think he can't play fast-listen to dry county from Keep The faith!

I have nothing at all against Slash in fact I will say he is going to be one remembered years down the road as well as others, but Richie and Slash are two (2)complete diffent ball clubs. And you just cannont even compare and contrast the 2 it is virtually impossible.

Ok this is to all the people who say Richie Sambora's shit coz he can't play fast!! first of all thats total bollocks, Richie can play extraordinarily fast (just look at his solos from 1987, or go see them live before you comment), Richie plays from his heart and soul which is where his true talent shines through, he believes in producing great music not showing off by playing 1000 notes a minute which in all honesty sounds tacky anyway!! long live Bon Jovi

You're so f*cking right. Though it's so hard to make people understand that music is not about speed or technique but soul and heart, and there are so few guitar players out there who achieved that, but there are soooooo many who can play technically and fast.

I remember once Richie said that his solos aren`t showing off and they are pieces of music. He said true words. That`s why I adore him so much. He`s not trying to be a virtuoso but a true musician. He`s trying to do his own thing - create beautiful melodies( besides beauty his guitar and music has deep meaning too). I respect him so much and proud that I listen to his music everyday - and his music is great help for me too.I don`t know what else to say... Thanks Richie! You`re the man.

The guitarist from DragonForce can play the guitar but when he plays its not melodic its just random notes put together and played fast? Wheres the feeling in that? Richie is very similar to Keith Urban....His brilliance with the Guitar is often overshadowed by the fact that he is multi talented, he is a terriffic singer and has co-written a heap of number 1 hits....
Anyone who doesn't rate Richie as a guitarist has simply not seen Bon Jovi live! That's where Richie does his best work, he doesn't show off with 4 minute solos on half the songs on every album like some guitarist cos they add fuk all to a song....
He is one of the Best in the world.

He made time for me and my brother many years ago, which he didn't have to, but he did. and I will never forget that! he wasn't like all the other rock stars, who don't have time for you! Sambora is the greatest Guitar hero of all time! Like someone has said, all over the world still selling out the biggest stadiums. He is adored as much as jon by the crowd, he plays solo's that sound good and not just like a big noise!

I never realised how boring he is as a guitarist. He hasn't composed any naturally powerful riifs like ACDC or Metallica. He uses the same five chords for a song, and his solos are all the same, just a simple melody repeated over and over again. Other guitar players have versatility. Bed of Roses, Livin on a Prayer and Wanted Dead or Alive follow the same intro pattern. Steve Vai can do any solo, shred, a melody, a blues solo, a wah solo etc. Richie is just a boring guitarist.

I think you need to get your facts right before you open your mouth mate, of course Richie isn't going to throw out loads of virtuoso solos in Jovi's pop-influenced songs, because that's not what the fans are looking for. Listen to Richie's solo albums to see just what a great song writer and blues/rock guitarist he really is.

And in response to your Vai comment, I recently downloaded his discography and there are about five songs I can stand to listen to, he just shows off for the sake of showing off, none of it sounds remotely good. Sure, from a technical skill standpoint Vai kicks Richie's ass, but that's not what matters, Richie plays (yeah simple) bluesy, melodic and soulful music, and I'd rather listen to that than Vai's collection of weird sound-bites and stupid noises any day.

Vai is good when he's confined to the style of a conventional band (listen to Whitesnake's "Slip of the tongue" album), but when he's left to his own devices he just writes rubbish (he actually has a track in which he talks, using different voice filters, about masturbating, WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!?!?). Sorry post 4, I've just read some on this nob's earlier posts and I need to speak up. Most of the people arguing with you aren't denying the technical skill of your mentioned virtuoso guitarists, they are indeed impressive from the standpoint of skill, but that isn't what music is about, music is an artistic medium meant to entertain, Virtuoso isn't entertaining, but Bon Jovi is, that's why they sell out 100,000+ gigs in a few days, whereas people like Vai and Batio struggle to fill small rooms.

Music is an art form that is used as an artistic medium for SELF EXPRESSION, not entertainment. Being a jazz sax player, I play what I like and if someone wants to listen, fine. If not, I don't care. I won't get 100,000 gigs, but I will express myself for the love of the art form, not the business. But as far as Richie S, he's a beast.

Actually, technically he is mediocre at best. I remember a Guitar World interview where Jon talked openly about Richie not being a "Van Halen" or anything. Nonetheless, I think his soulful phrasing combined with background (and even lead) singing more than makes up for any of the technical issues. And this is coming from somebody who started playing guitar because of Sambora.

I'm not trying to irritate anyone, as I myself am a Bon Jovi fan also. I'm however sure many fans regard him as "the best" simply because he's...well...Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi, if you know what I mean. You still shouldn't feel offended by my comment as technical skills are only a part of what makes a great guitar player. And Richie himself is certainly a testimony to that.

Spankki, actually if you ever saw Skid Row interviews from back in the day, Dave Sabo used to rave about Richie quite a bit, and would say things like have been said here, e.g. "The guy just burns live, you've really got to see him live." "He puts so much soul into his playing." So there's a pro that says it loud and proud, and you're right, technically he's not steve vai, but he's sold a hella lot more albulms too. It just sounds good and feels good.

dragonlee, you need some help my friend, Wolfmother is as bad as these guys buy your stanrd of technical playing, maybe worse, they had great attitude, but common, they were not hard songs technically speaking. If you check out satc giving lessons on youtube, you will ntoice he places a lot of emphaiss on feel actually, despite being highly technically competent. Plus BB king, terrible technichan, great musician, the two don't neccessarily go hand in hand. If you donlt like sambora, why watch?
