  • OMG!

I say it, like so many!

    Just wonderful!

    This music is unique!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  • Never understood why some people call this or another Jazz musics Elevator Music??? I never saw an elevator composing any musical piece. And by the way, i already ask people if they heard Pat Metheny when they riding an elevator, and the answer is always NO.

  • wow! it`s perfect...like on CD

  • OMG!

  • Pat likes that top

  • This only has 114,685 views, but Rebecca Black's "Friday" boasts 19.5 million? Maybe the world really WILL end in 2012.

  • when the video ends.. personal Armageddon

  • For a guy who loved prog rock/metal with their long-form pieces and who has since moved on to a love for jazz - this piece is ideal.

  • Chong Vu is a great trumpeter

  • This is the cutting edge of music. Phenomenal. This is the greatest music the Pat Metheny group has done and that's saying a lot as their body of work is the best of the last 35 years.

  • this is very uplifting and precious music, wonderful

  • I hate going to a jazz video and finding the tipical comment "lol this is like elevator music" geez you ignorant, elevators are musical geniuses then¡¡¡

  • These guys have INSANE time

  • Master piece, thanks Pat

  • puede ser una kalimba o una mbira

cualquiera de las dos puede ser

  • Pat's music awakens dormant areas of the human spirit - this piece takes you to those unexplored areas - I can't get enough! Another Way Up project please!

  • Master of those who know.

  • What is the little instrument playing the melody at about 4:47 called?

This is amazing ensemble playing by all.

  • @trr321321 - That is a kalimba, sometimes referred to as an African thumb piano.

  • Amazing, Metheny is equal to the great classical composer of all the time, the complication matches one you hear in Chopins oncertoes, mind you, how different is he from Chopin and yet ... no less brilliant !!!

  • 4 People don't know real music, they prob listen to new school Hip-Hop.

  • Holy shit Pat is inceadible and I just wait two days to see him in the Mexico festival

  • worst cocktease ever. Why oh why cut straight when it gets good man! D:

  • God, I love this man's music.

  • nice!

  • What is the name of the song that beginns at about 5:00 and lasts till the end and about two more minutes in the second part?

  • Check out the 1978 version of this. It's only the framework of a small section. But it's cool to see how the composition developed over the last 30 years.

  • Pat Metheny learned "his" sound from the two Brazilian geniuses Egberto Gismonti and Toninho Horta, whose music very few know.

  • man lyle mays is so dope.

  • awesome contrapuntal shit though

  • too many 16th notes, man

  • No other musician can move me like Pat does. He is simply amazing. LOVE this!!!!

  • The Way Up is a real masterpiece; just can't get tired to listening Metheny's music!

  • @UNIbreaker You sound like a smart guy.

  • @servantsthree OWNED ! xD

  • @UNIbreaker Apparently you're riding some pretty hip elevators, man.

  • @CowbellNinja

    Haha! Well said. Thumbs up.

The Way Up: A work of genius.

  • @UNIbreaker, hey ignorant kid, go back to the hole in the ground you came out of, and stay there.

  • @UNIbreaker You should hear Kenny G.....

  • i just saw this in music class 2day nd i mite just bye this album

  • @munkyjunior12

I also reccomend Letters from Home. If you get this, Letters from Home is very much in the same manner of songwriting with a very poignant ethnic tinge.

  • I love this album. Probably Pat Metheny Group's best album, but in a lot of ways, it's even better live. Just awesome.

  • 4:45 <3

  • I have this on DVD now :) It's absolutely amazing! :D

  • I am incredibally jealous of the manner in which Metheny writes. So unorthodox, yet so natural. The main theme from Part One of The Way Up is beautiful.

  • Is it possible to post this HQ?

  • Somehow the Way Up just comes to life as a live piece like it just doesn't on the CD (not that the studio version isn't great, because of course it is). I wish I'd gone to the tour...

  • did anyone catch that one-hand cymbal rush that Antonio did while still playing the snare with the other and? That was fucking sick!!

  • wow so much time has past sinse i heard that song and i will never forget it again he always going to be my favorite guitar player you really inspire me

  • It's just amazing how they can express so much feeling with no words, only harmonies, chord changes and rhythm. I simply love this music!

  • 4:46 = exquisite

  • Amen, "alex94115" This guy is the goods...Check out "Orchestrion". I saw it last night in Cincinnati. It was amazing.

  • highest level of perfection

  • Nothing else but the presence of GOD himself has taken me to another realm like Pat Metheny's music...There aren't even words to describe the feeling that rushes me when I hear it. There's power behind each note; a force to be reckoned with!

  • very nice ! です.

  • this is a piece about musical evolution listen to the piano riff in mvmt 3

it might be the first notes a child might play ! this is the meaning of this piece IMHO

  • Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Metheny; yeah, he fits right in w/ all those masters. If they had lived in this day and age or he in theirs I'm sure the compositions would emote just as much power and depth as he's given us thru the years. And such a wonderful collection/group of excellent musicians to perform it w/. Simply amazing!! Emote fellas, emote!!

  • Great composition..love Pat...influences: Steve Reich, Eberhard Weber, Happy the Man, Keith Jarrett, Debussy...

  • @bobiquesada great taste in music

  • Is Cuong Vu trying to communicate with humpback whales?

He better watch out, the Star Trek crew might kidnap his ass to talk to that alien ship...

I defy anyone to pack more nerd into a post than that.

  • I thought he stopped using the es175 before this?

  • 5/5

  • this is just a new view of what jazz is, or was, :) its very unique and creative

  • Just beautifull! One of the greatest melodies of all time. And so simple. Masterful.

  • And so much built around it.

Sort of like Beethoven with "Ode to Joy." Really simple theme, amazing music built around it.

  • the best concert I ever seen. (in Paris)

  • Totally breathtaking!!

  • Totally brilliant .

  • I'm not a professional musician, but I've played in a lot of small ensembles - I've always wondered how Pat and the team coordinate this tune - it's basically 60 minutes, no breaks, and the most unbelievably involved time and chord changes! Incredible to see *and* hear!

  • How the hell does he get that sustain ???

  • @Volkanius 30 000 $ of equipment ougta do it xD

  • He's using e-bow.

  • Amazing work - they seem to have been able to tap into some deep undertow energy flow and rhythm...

  • unbelievable, makes my hairs stand on end !

  • Buy the White Album titled the Pat Metheny

    Group original group recording

    Awesome !!

  • Pat Metheny's music is the soundtrack of my life. No other artist touches me so deep or moves me so much. The Way Up is an amazing achievement. I never get tired of it and i always hear/feel something new. Thank you Pat Metheny!

  • I just put this DVD on, and am already melting into the music. I agree with you 100%. Been following Pat pretty close since a summer day in 1986. Going to see him in Boston, May 20th. Peace. Go Pat!

  • @alex94115

Agreed, his music has such incredible power and beauty that words can barely do it justice.

  • when he starts bowing that bass, the hair stands up on the back of my neck

  • @alex94115

I totally agree!!!!! I never thougt that a piece like The Way Up was possible to exist.

Pat is a Soul from "the Other Side"...

  • @alex94115 Man it just feels like I wrote that myself...

  • the only guy i think who could make a jazz concept album work............and did

  • which album should i buy first?

  • all of them!

  • Wow.........just frickin' wow........

  • This is AMAZING!! i wish i started getting into Metheny a long time ago lol

  • Got this on dvd from Festival International de Jazz de Montreal. He cuts up "BAD"!!!!

  • Mesmerizing, breathtaking, tantalizing piece of music, straight to the heart and the...mind as well!!

  • I was writing a thesis paper on a school day where in all I was running at about 40 hours without sleep. I went through this 4 times and was finishing it up near the middle of Part Two for those who have the cd. Weirdest feeling ever lol.

  • Awesome..............!

  • "The Way Up" from 2005 is a fantastic composition (about 1 hour long) by Metheny and Mays, it contains all moods (from beauty to chaos). Funny about the music of Metheny, for me his music capture (sums up) life in all its moments, it's so expressive.

  • Great comment, Agree with you.

  • @bitnize

    i could not agree more!!

i have been listening to this group and Pat, Lyle since 1979

I grew up listening to Jazz as my father was a jazz musician.

these guys just kill it at every turn.

I said it at the time when this came out . this is one of the most important contributions to Modern Music

Period!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ever!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is Pat and all his music combined all elements of his recordings

Lyle rocks!!!! he is off the charts

  • fucking.... amazing

  • HEY KURT

  • what a kickass solo pat... those harmonics at the end

  • this must be just a joy to play

  • the blu ray is so much better. awesome stuff tho

  • what is that instrument at the intro of part 1. at 4.48?

  • thumb cymbals

  • The official name is Kalimba

  • i dunno mate.. i've seen and heard it before in a small concert, if i see the musician, i shall ask ;)

  • it's a kalimba

  • putos

  • por?

  • APLYERS......Aptitude + Attitude = Altitude

  • This piece takes me on a journey. Destination: The Happy Place.

  • Simply the most breath-takingly beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. It wrenches one's soul from the chest.

  • Umm. A prick calling me a dick... that's interesting..

  • I'm with you on this one!

  • Of course wonderful, but Lyle on keyboards never gets the attention he so richly deserves

  • this is definetly it! got the album, love the stuff :D

  • The most icredible song of PMG !!!

  • This Reminds me of a time when me and mates went to Amsterdam for a heavy weekend... we always had a nap in afternoon with "The Way Up" blaring as loud as we could. :)

  • I have seen HUNDREDS of concerts. None better than the PMG The Way Up Show. Never wil

  • i agree. utterly amazing stuff

  • this is the best piece of music i've EVER heard! so perfect!

  • One of the most beautiful compositions I have ever heard. The fact that all the sections flow together without stopping is amazing. The textures are so deep. This is a masterpiece! The band itself is one of the best in history. It's previous 2 offerings, "Speaking of Now" and "The Way Up" are genius. I can listen to both over and over again with the same enjoyment. I can't wait for the next installment

  • is excellent

  • If you are a part of this group, you´ve made it =)

  • There are not doubts... God exists! TKs for this video...

  • Amazing!

  • This is one of the best things I have ever seen and heard.

  • Fantastic video. I've just embed this video in my Blog: ELEMENTO MUSICAL

  • what is that instrument a5 5:00 ?

  • That appears to be a finger harp (aka thumb harp). Just another example of The Pat Metheny Group incorporating diverse instrumentation in their music and live shows. They probably could get away with a marimba or virtually any electronic keyboard, but no, they're going to keep it as real and unique as possible. Live PMG is incredible to witness.

  • Thanks, friend!

I wish I could witness one of their concerts. Maybe someday, hopefully.

  • The dictionary definition of that instrument = Kalimba.

    Happy Holidays!

  • this concert looks great on blue-ray

  • superb.this is what metheny calls think in music. connections, branches, extensions, complexity...h

  • If I can play this one ever, I will can rip in piece...

  • I first heard this about two years ago - I have worn out the CD. GREAT!!! I lent the DVD to a musician friend about 8 mos ago and have yet to get it back. I think that this is one of the greatest jazz recordings I have heard and I have been a fusion fan since the 70's. Turn people on to it all the time. His greatest work!!

  • What is the name of the instrument That guy's playing with at 4:50?? I've never seen it before.

  • It's called Mbira or Kalimba. Just google it, then you get more detailed information.

  • What a great band !
