  • Ok I did instructions to the letter... I turn it on and I have 2 flashing red lights instead of 3? WTF? Fans start full tilt, then stop right away? What do I do now? Please help 2 weeks til Xmas & I can't afford another piece of crap from microsoft.

  • what kind of bolt are you using for this because i dont see what you are using for it is it the one from the heat sinks or from a hardware store.

  • don't do this on your lap... heatsinks hurt falling on your foot :(

  • also !!!....Make sure your fans are cleaned and running smoothly...even if they look clean they can have some issues. you can put them in destilled water powering them by 12V battery or 12v psu and leave them for 20-30 minutes and they´ll run smoothly again :-)

  • I had a hard time understanding this error but eventually I figured out that too much heat from the heatsinks transfers to the PCB....so instead of buying a kit I found out a clever little solution to it.

Just remove the clamps and heatsinks and put duct tape over the holes on both sides of the PCB...make a hole so you can mount the heatsinks and put the clamps back on ;-) hope it works for you also. Regards Anders

  • Will silicone based heat sink compound work in place of the arctic silver?

  • what do you recommend 5 drill bit or 6

  • microsoft never mastered computer programming, their video game consoles are no different

  • my xbox broke the day after the warrenty was up. i hate microsoft.

  • isnt the dirty cpu and gpu thingy the reason for the audio but no video problem? pleeeeease respond gears 3 comes out in 4 days!!!

  • The Xclamps are not the cause of red lights. DO NOT DO THIS. It can permanently damage your console. The xclamps (with their center support) keep the motherboard & chips in good contact with the heat sinks. If you remove them, the next time your box overheats, it can ruin your xbox.

  • no this is not like the "towel method". Overheating it with a towel temporarily resolves solder problems, but doesn't do anything to repair the underlying cause of the issue. The X-Clamps are what causes the issue to happen to begin with

  • will this works on 2 RED LIGHT ?

  • dont you have to put the x clamps back on.

  • @Scar666Ali The whole point is to remove those x clamps, they are the cause of pretty much everything wrong with the xbox 360.

  • yea my ps2 still works and i got it 10 years ago and the super nentendo which is way older 4 xboxs have red ring on me and i say FUCK MY LIFE and micorsofts...

  • oh no sony win again YOUR XSHIT

  • @TheSummon28 had a ps3 broke down 3 times, i have had my xbox 360 since 2008 and no problems yet

  • I had e74 error and did what you said and now I have 2 red lights. What should I do?

  • @ryafbr Instant overheat?? Try loosening the bolts a little

  • @erkb96 ya i already loosened and tightened the bolts many times, theres nothing i can do to fix it now is there?

  • @ryafbr , you need to make sure you followed the video , if instant over heat the heat paste didn't take , you have to put the paste down tighten the screws and when you turn it on with the fan unplugged , you have to feel the heat thru the heat sinks , if you don't feel any heat transfering thru either the bolts are loose , or the paste wasn't done right .

  • don't use a toothpick, use a cotton bud with an alcohol based liquid

  • yea i highly doubt this will work at all. He made it look like this is professional.

  • @verefiedxL Did you even try this? Nothing is ever guaranteed, but it has worked for many people.

  • @RobbieHct This does work more then half the time. Usually when this happens with a graphics card on a computer, cpu in a laptop, or on a computer. The amber processor failure light comes on. This is rare, but this is the cause. It would appear 360's and newer hardware (that is built for performance on one task) like computer will have to have their thermal glue cleaned up and reapplied.Or it will melt off to the side. Like computers

  • @verefiedxL well worked for me !!!

  • @verefiedxL it does and depending on how well you do it depends on how long it will last.

  • FUCK YOU MICROSOFT

I shouldn't have to spend 5 fucking hours fixing this expensive ass console. Why the fuck does my NES still work while my xbox doesnt???

don't buy your shit from china next time and expect me to pay 100 fucking dollars to repair it.

    fucking asshole jews

  • @StateCCM

    Wow,

This is the BEST YOUTUBE COMMENT EVER!

    Congrats bro!

    ;)

  • @StateCCM Microsoft Exec: Achem, we take great pride in our products. Do you REALIZE how much time it takes to find the cheapest parts from india or whoeverthefuckistan that will work on the console JUST ENOUGH so that it fails a little while after the warrenty ends? Do you WANT us to have our wife's older brother's best friend only afford a BMW i6 and not a M3? DO YOU? HUH? WHAT? I CANT HEAR YOU OVER MY BITCHIN WII GAME!!!!

  • @StateCCM Eric Cartman?

  • @StateCCM EXACTLY!!! i was just asking myself this yesteday!! why does my damn NES thats 20 years+ old have NO issues and works like a pro!!

  • Worked like a charm

  • what type of arctic silver was it, or what is the best for this job?

Arctic silver 5, or it doesn't matters really

  • thanks

  • ive seen people do the bolts the other way

  • i tried this and followed the instructions to the tee. still no video and only sound. please help its my sons xbox and i cant afford to pay for someone to fix it or buy a new one.

  • @smschulte1 the no-video issue is common, and will lead to the 3rrod. try my newer video.

  • @smschulte1 What you need to do is over heat the GPU so that it get's a better connection to the board. Take the white plastic cover out and place the fan on top the CPU heatsink (the tall heatsink). Leave it on for about 10-15 minutes then turn it off and let it cool and put everything back in place.

  • @smschulte1 what you need to do is open up your xbox 360 and put fan on the cpu(big heatsink) and leave dvd drive on the gpu(small heatsink) and leave on for 30 mins or until it overheats then let it cool down for 45 min. or more and that should fix your no video but audio problem

  • @vohnable Its a good method but its also like the towel method, the overheating again could harm the Xbox's hard drive. But its a bit better because there's less chance that you're Xbox will get caught on fire. Thats what I read

  • @smschulte1 if its something on video, I think it might be your wires that connect to your TV, because if the sound works, then the video should work but the yellow wire might be messed up. Just thinking of the solution.

  • nice products they make when customers have to fix them themselves. Now I'm not a PS3 fanboy, buy my PS1 has worked flawlessly since 1998. These modern consoles sure have nice graphics but they fall apart in a year or two. Had to do the x-clamp fix today, hopefully that piece of shit comes to live again.

  • @rdas188 well the method seems to work... for now. Heated up the console and all that, got two red lights, adjusted the screws and the lights are green again.

  • @rdas188 lol i have 2 ylod ps3's a rrod victim xbox and next to them....... sega megadrive still 100% functional XD

  • @rdas188 everything modern is meant to break. which is sad. my 6000$ dirtbike wont last 25hrs without having to do hundreds of dollars in maintenance.

    FUCK MS

  • No it was a liquid I know what washers are

  • What did u put on the bolts

  • @littlede1996 those are called washers.

  • @DKWowN3rd I had the same problem with my xbox I just to out the power supply for about 10 minutes and put it back in and worked perfectly:)

  • i dont have any red lights or anything....but one day i got the "E 74 Error"...turned it off then on...and it works...BUT it has a graphics problem, and everything is blurry and messed up!! whats wrong with it?

    Cheers, Chris

  • will that solve the "no video" problem?

  • So I west about 20 bucks on peny trick it works about 2 weeks and i west an other 25 bucks on xbox live the same day boom red ring so its 50!!!!

now plz plz some one tell me if i buy this things it will work for sure??? i have 3 red ring about 2 seconeds and than its 2 red rings

    plz gime answer THX

  • Does this work for e73?

  • This fix works for 1 light E 74, right?

  • my xbox has the extra heatsink attached to it , what do i do differently?

  • i did my x clamp mode a little differently: what i did was instead of drilling holes in the metal case, i put a 4 penny under the gpu, because the mother board seemed to be a little bent where the gpu is. before this, i been getting a two screen with lines on them. but after putting pennyies under gpu and cpu, i was able to play my gow 2 for 3 hours and still going strong. just for a food for thought

  • THANKS ! :- ) I had one red light (~GPU overheated). I used the description of your video and now my XBOX 360 runs again. With the screws it's far more easier to replace the heatsinks and in my opinion it's cheap, too !

  • Hi guys my xbox keeps freezing no red lights and no error codes it just freezes what is causing this? i have tryed games without an xbox connection, + without harddrive still crashes occur i have replaced the heat sync paste but to no avail running out of options can any1 give me any advice?

  • @maxy125 freezing issues are usually caused by a cold solder joint under the gpu. try out my newer xclamp fix vid. that freezing youre getting will eventually turn to 3rrod or e74.

  • Thanks for this video. I came across something odd: I just bought both T10 and T8 screw driver heads. I followed through and got the specific screws out with the T10, but the now when I attempt to unscrew the screws designed for T8, none of them budge and I don't want to ruin the screws if I push it further.. any help?

  • Once again thanks for the video. Great pictures and good explanations. This helped a lot of my friends do what I've been doing for years.

  • This fix works perfectly for me using Llammas guide and kit. Have used this method to repair about 20 or so Xboxes of all versions and models. I will note that if the Xbox has actually red-ringed, you can fix them temporarily but they seem to break again after a couple months. Conversely the E74 Xboxes can still boot so hardware damage is less likely, so those ones are a much better candidate for fixing. The E74 ones seem to be fixed permanently. Haven't had one go dead yet.

  • i got 2 red lights instantly after doing the fix, what did i do wrong?

  • @lolzman619

try without the metal casing in between the bolts and the mainboard .

and when you turn it on without a case and the fan , it always flashes 2 lights after 2 minutes or so.

so put it back in 1 piece, and the 2 lights dis appear.

  • @lolzman619

You probably tightened the heatsink down unevenly. 2 red lights is a heat error which tells me the cooler isn't making proper contact. Also if you are inexperienced with computer hardware, remember that thermal paste is absolutely essential for this. You will damage the Xbox without it. Re-do your paste, and tighten the bolts in a criss-cross pattern. You really need to crank them down but watch not to strip out the screw holes.

  • Ok this fix worked perfectly at first. but now my Xbox is freezing on me. What should i do to stop the freezing?? Should i tweak the bolts a certian way or perhaps reapply the thermal paste and shit???

  • @KILLER4Life5 yes. try different tightnesses on the GPU heatsink bolts first. keep them nice and even though. if it still acts up, try a heatgun as shown in my updated vid, or try to heat the gpu side as shown in my vid called xclamp fix 2.

  • @RobbieHct how about NOT using the metal chassis shield as backplate for the heatsinks .

the metal case is causing short circuits .

you dont use spacers and are bending the mobo too.

  • @KILLER4Life5

remove the x clamps again and bolt them directly on the mainboard .

you might short circuit the board with the metal chassis., goz you dont have spacers.

i know this trick , but normally they dont use the chassis as back plate .

  • @KILLER4Life5

Mine did this too after being fixed. I think at this point they have physical damage on them. I was able to use this fix on a newer Falcon version though and so far no freezing after a couple months. Neither of mine needed the overheat or heatgun tricks to work

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH! I managed to successfully fix my brother's broken Xbox 360 with this (along with the penny trick from another video, I'm not sure which one did the trick, but I'll assume both). Never thought that piece of junk would ever work again but it did. Thanks again :)

  • it doesnt work

  • i did everything then got to the overheating part left it on for between 5-7 minutes and i never got 2 red lights but extremily hot should i matter?

  • is replacing the x clamps that important or can you still use them afterwards

  • @ixLeGaCY i always replace them and use the bolts and washers. but i have read a lot on the web that others put the x-clamps back on and it still works. so i guess its up to you. just be careful with those things. one little scratch across the board could really kill it.

  • @RobbieHct thanks

  • @RobbieHct hmmmm what if my old xbox didnt have x clamps on it?

  • @RobbieHct are the nylon washers the plastic once that are flexible?

  • @masterprogram they're not really flexible. you can bend them with enough force, but theyre not meant to be flexible. they are exactly whats shown in the vid... small white washers. they are nylon, but do look and feel like plastic. click that link for my updated vid. i go over the parts used much better than i did in this vid.

  • can you use this to fix a four lights flashing?

  • @taj4l 4 lights flashing means an AV cable is unplugged or not properly fit in, Doing this would screw your xbox for no reason. Double check all your cables.

  • @goodbyeash well i did this and it worked. but the next day when i tried it at my house it worked. but when i plug in my AV cable one red light flashes...

  • @taj4l Reason why its doing that is probably because you did this when the only problem was the AV cable.

  • @goodbyeash but i tried different cables with it...

  • worked great thank you... and thanks to llama's website. A fantastic help!

  • My kids and I play it everyday and have no problems after the fix...its a good video!...AND IT WORKS!

  • @the350chevy350 -that is awesome! its always great when people have good luck with this fix. even better knowing it helped out an entire family! keep in mind that there is no permanent x-clamp fix. it's just a cheap alternative to having it professionally reflowed/reballed or buying a new xbox. doing this fix hopefully buys people a lot of time. i always suggest using that time to save for a new 360. as always, let's hope it stays fixed though!

  • @ jessbgood19...I used this video and fixed my XBOX...it has been over a month now

  • I cant seem to get mine one right. >.<

out of all the xboxes I've fixed is this is just being a rebel T-T

  • Thank you por your tutorial... I'm from Chile... and I followed your instructions step by step....and I could repair my xbox...

  • Hey man, thanks a lot for posting this vid. It helped me out and I won't have to rely on microsoft or buy a new 360. Will try the heat gun on it some other time like your updated vid said. Again, thanks a lot.

  • question my xbox has the e73 error code. i took it apart and was getting ready to take the xclamps off and i noticed none of the chips have those little adhesive tape on them. after i do the xclamp so i go head and put the pennies wrapped in electrial tape on them?

  • I got the kit off ebay today and just fitted it. followed the instructions and its now working again, thanks to all. Little fiddley but the casing is the worst part.

  • What size drill bit? btw thanks man idk if it works yet but it gives hope.

  • will someone please e mail me how to fix my probs my e mail is stoneylilstone@yahoo.com

  • i had 3 lights befor i started now i have 4 flashing i never put it all the way together tho what did i do wrong please help

  • i had 3 lights befor i started now i have 4 flashing i never put it all the way together tho what did i do wrong please help

  • @stoneylilstone1 4 lights mean you've got an AV error...

Did you have your AV cable plugged in? if not that's why you got the 4 lights

  • do u have to add silver heatsink cause i dont want to go buy things please write back

  • I got the E18 error on one of my JTAGs yay :)

  • I have 1 RROD light and error code 74, will this fix work for that? I keep seeing the x-clamp fix for e74 with 3 lights. Any ideas?

  • ok so i followed this guide perfectly and it makes my system work. I fixed it yesterday and I got a good 8 hours of gaming in with no problems. I then shut if off and went to bed. Woke up this morning and tried to turn it on and I got the 3 rrod again. This happened a couple times now. Everytime I use this fix, it seems I only get a day or two before I get the rrod back again. Any1 know how to fix this, or what my problem is?:

  • also where can i find arctic silver? radioshack?

  • will this work on an elite or a special edition xbox? mine is a green halo 3 edition.

  • SUCCESS!!! I bought an xbox 360 for 10$ on ebay, broken "as-is" while ago. Just used artic silver 5, along with the x-clamp fix, and its running very nicely so far. But, its only been a couple days, so I have lots of gaming to catch up on! By the way the tightness of the bolts is VERY important to the success of the fix. The goal is to have a perfectly spaced and evenly distributed thermal paste.

  • is it nessesary that the thermal conductive paste has to be from arctic silver or do you just recommand using it ???????????

  • im about to buy 9 rrod xboxed for 200... ima try this on the ones with 3 rrod with the others sell for 30 or 40 bucks and make profit

  • Lol... The song is called CPU

  • I need some help, my xbox has one red ring, and the error code E73, idk if all this is necessary to fix it or what? Can someone help me out here?

  • @jao3310 usually with e73, its a gpu/hana problem with the solder. you need to remove the motherboard and all the stuff on it (heatsinks, cables, etc) and then you need to use a heatgun to reflow under the gpu and southbridge hana area. i made a vid that shows the heatgun part. do that, then the x-clamp fix. this will usually fix e73. not always, but usually. the best of luck.

  • @RobbieHct thanks bro, ill try it all as soon as i can and ill let u know what happens

  • Just want to let everyone know, the secondary error code 0002 is very hard to fix. if you have 3rrod and cant get this fix to work, check the secondary error code. if its 0002, it might be time for a new xbox.

there are plenty of vids and info on google that explains how to check the secondary error code.

  • I did every step in part 1 & part 2...my xbox works great now...Thank you for a great post!...cost me $10

  • I did just as your video said I got my xbox working!...Thank you for a great post!

  • Ok so I dd this fix and it got rid of the three red lights by now it turns on and my fans go like super fast then they shut off and it goes to 2 blinking lights. What shld I do???

  • @ktmbraap893

    I'm getting the same problem.

I tried different amounts of thermal paste.

First I tried with a drop and didn't really spread it. Second I put a little more and spread it around evenly. But when I turn the xbox on it flashes 3 red lights, then it goes to 2 red lights. I tried losing and tightening the bolts as well. Any Idea what the cause of this is? Or should I try differen't amounts of thermal paste.

  • @ktmbraap893 this is common after the fix. if the bolts are too tight, it can actually cause board flex, which will make the cpu "think" its overheating. that is why the fans get really fast and loud, and then you get 2 red lights. so although your xbox was only on for a minute, it thought it overheated (fast fans, then shut down with 2rrod).

the tightness of the bolts can be really tricky on some boards. you really need to just play around with different tightnesses.

  • Rub out the thermal paste for a nice even thin coat, could also polish the heatsinks, but I didn't do that either :P and I'm talking about the 360s ( preventing it from getting overheating, preventing is better then waiting ;P )

    Fans: Nexus

    Thermal grease: Nexus

  • i just sent mine to microsoft, there is 3 YEARS of warranty!! they fixed it in a week.

  • @germatrix yeah... obviously this is for people who dont have a warranty. but thanks for youre intelligent insight!

  • I've fixed my jtagged Xenon with this guide! It Works!

Thank you for this guide, i spent no more than $6!

  • Thankyou. I thought the RROD was forcing me to buy a new 360. Certainly was an adventure in opening the thing, but once back together it's all running smoothly again.

  • hey do you have to drill the holes for those screws because i used other sized screws and they do not reach that metal casing? does it matter?

  • @brandonskater911 if the screws arent long enough to go through the case, just put them through the mobo holes. they still need to be the same m5 screws. but if going through the motherboard instead of the case, you can use the 10mm ones.

  • I did everything but my xbox is flashing 2 red lights and the middle green light is flashing as well.

  • did everything in the video and still get the 3 red rings. . . . .

  • Didnt work first time due to me overtightening the screws. Finger tight and it started up fine but then froze. Re-set the GPU and its been absolutely fine!!!

    THANK U!!!!!!

  • @addo1986 glad to hear it. thats the first thing i tell people who still cant get their system working after the fix... play around with the tightness of the bolts!

  • Cheers for the video. What drill bit size did you use? The screws you can use for this remedy can only be one size right.

Also, what is a torx T8 screwdriver? I have an array of smallish thin screwdrivers, will they do or does the xbox need this specific screwdriver type?

    Much appreciated! cheers

  • i followed all the directions. it works for like a minute and than i get two redrings. am i doing somthing wrong?

  • @toyoumy88 check your cables

  • @MerlinsSock Like the Colored cables?

  • @toyoumy88 yes, sometimes if the cables a/v or component cables aren't plugged in correctly it can give you xbox red rings, also if the switch on the cables is turned to hd on a non-hd tv. Hopefully that will work

  • @toyoumy88 check your cables

  • My twelve year old son said, " Dad, all I want for christmas is to have my Xbox fixed. I commend you, whoever you have worked for . I had to play with the washers a little bit to get the right balance. get mother board sitting in nice and steady, can't push down on board anywhere. then I put one 5mm nylon on top of motherboard. Decent coating of thermal paste. Worked great, saved me the money I didn't have. I appppppplauuuuuuudddddddddd you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

  • Thanks man, guide worked awesome. TO ANYONE ELSE DOING THIS: with my xbox I used 2 steel washers instead of 3 under the motherboard, and used only the nylon washers on the top side, no steel ones. The reason being was that there was too much space between the bottom of the heatsinks and the gpu causing the xbox to overheat in 5min, now the heatsink is directly on top of the gpu. ALSO the bolts he suggested didn't fit on mine, so bring the little x-clamp bolts with you to home depot.

  • is it good to do it before it gets the rrod soo it never gets it?

  • @kodkillen96 Only if your xbox has no warranty (including the 6months or 1 year that some stores give to second hand ones) because if you have either warranty you can take it back or send it off for repairs/replacement. So only do it if you have no protection on the Xbox.

  • Thanks for this im gonna give it a bash when the parts come

  • How does bolts instead of a clamp fix the error? Isn't the error lnked to the ANA/HANA chip or over heating?

  • @wordsofwisdom2009 this solution increases cooling potential by providing proper thermal paste (ie: gaming grade, not whatever mush MS uses) and uses the huge baseplate on the back to take some additional heat instead of the small "x-clamps". As far as I am told a big part of the overheating GPU problem (3 lights rrod) is that the x-clamps were getting hot and so heat wasnt really dissipating.

  • I did this and my xbox has been working for about 7 months now :)

  • do you have to drill new wholes or is there a bolt or screw that can fit the ones that are already there?

  • do you have to drill new wholes or is there a bolt or screw that can fix the ones that are already there?

  • xboxsarerepairable is a fucking cunt!

  • first hand experience, don't let those fucking bolts fall out! FFUUCCKKK!!!!!!

  • would u find the screwes at rona too

  • i noticed it didnt pick up any profiles at the end of the video.... does it erase the memory in your hardrive?

  • @DEMAN885Didnt have the harddrive in. It was a test run.:D

  • @motojunkie42 oh, ok thanks

  • OK Question:

Why does he drill holes and install new screws?

Why not just pop the X-clamps back on?

  • @Devalation Good question. It must just give u the perfect height the x-clamps weren't givin. Its overall way better than just replacing the thermal paste and poppin the x-clamps back on

  • hey thanks man.....got the parts and fixed it in about an hour ..... thought I'd thank you since I wouldn't have known what to do without this guide.

  • lol gigity

  • i did this and now i have 2 red lights...

  • @crackerjap407 the 2 red lights when u turn on ur xbox means that the gpu or the cpu dont touch the heatsink very good

either try to put more arctic silver or tighten up the bolts a little more

  • @TheRedRingOfDeathFix

Dude shut the fuck up u say that in every fucken Xbox rrod video! I just saw like 5 and your comment is on every fucken one! These videos are showing us how to do it for FREE!!! Not like your bullshit that you charge to show us how to fix it and it ends up not working! I fucken tried it and you fucken fucked up my Xbox even more! With that money I wasted I could've bought a new Xbox! (or bitch slap ur mom!!)

  • did everthing that you did still didnt work for me??

  • thanks for the guide. my xbox 360 din't had the RROD but he had the black screen problem (the sound was fine). it was fixed by cleaning and replacing the thermal paste, and after that overheating it ( towel trick)

  • are the heat sinks threaded? thats why there are no nuts to screw onto the bolts?

  • @urbloodygutsonmytux The Heat sinks r threaded

  • @KILLER4Life5

Thanks, is your xbox still working after you completed this fix?

  • @urbloodygutsonmytux Still workin in full power :D

  • NVM!!! Tweakin the BOLTS r the KEY if u still have the RROD. Great Guide 5 Stars!!

I had to loosen em pretty damn much to get it workin.

  • This guide is worthless. I did everythin perfectly and still got the RROD.

  • I followed this guide and it works.

  • I don't think I understand "cutting the nylon washers"

can someone put some detail into this please.

Is it cut all the way through? does it matter which way the cut in the washers are facing?

    Is it even necessary?

  • @urbloodygutsonmytux dude all u gotta do is cut the very edge off two of them and face them towards each other
