When Roman Gabriel and the Fearsome Foursome of the Rams played, that was when men played the game of football, not like today with all of these sissy boys running around in their pink shoes .... The Ram uniforms should be blue and white...not the sissy boy colors of gold and green or whatever the sweetie pies are wearing now...
I love Roman Gabriel..have been a fan of his since I was 10 years old. I am always looking for updates or current news on him. Please tell him that he still has a following ..and we think he's great!
"I know a lot of fans are watching guys going into the Hall of Fame, and they wondered why I haven't gone in. I always say, look, if it happens, it happens. There are a lot in there who deserve to be and a lot who aren't in there who deserve to be. I think maybe the shameful thing is that so much of it is politics. My stats stand up to many of them who are in there. Some will say, `Well, he didn't play in a Super Bowl.' Then anyone who didn't win a Super Bowl shouldn't be in there." R. Gabriel
I love how people say they follow my Dad and then say he is not a HOF'em. My Dad was one of the best quarterbacks of his era. At the time of his retirement in 1977, Dad ranked in the all-time top 10 in passing attempts (4,498), completions (2,366), passing yards (29,444), and touchdowns (201). Despite these impressive numbers, and the fact that he ranks within the top 50 all time leaders in just about every category, makes him HOF candidate.
While I do not agree with anybody saying Gabriel is a Hall Of Famer....he clearly was a good leader and good QB and did enough to deserve more respect than he currently gets. I studied his career from afar (I'm only 44) and barely watched him but know enough that I like and respect him.
@sd31263 Yes, but my Dad holds the world for most fumbles recovered by himself. So yes, he did fumble alot, but if you watch old films, Dad picked them right back up and made some nice receptions and memorable runs.
Great NFL QB. And the Rams had some very good teams back then. They'd make the playoffs but they could never get past the second round. The fact that they never made it into the Championship game back then is why Roman isn't in the HOF.
Does anyone remember why the Rams traded Gabriel? Whta where the flaws in his game?
They struggeled a bit in 70-71-and in 72. But then made a great run at the SB starting in 1973. It seemd every year they had a different QB during those years, where as Gabriel founf a home in Philadelphia.
@6400az .......The Rams traded Gabriel after the 73 season in exchange for a very good receiver named Harold Jackson. By that time not only had they traded for John Hadl but they had young QB's in the fold such as Harris,Jaworski, and Haden.
Actually the trade came afetr the 72' season. Still, does'nt really make a lot of sense to trade away a great experienced QB for another. Your taking a chance here, since he'd be entering a new system. Think it was a mistake to trade Gabriel. Ironic that both Ram QB's get traded to the Eagles and both set the league on fire. The Rams where an excellent team through out the late 60's and 70's. The simply, had no clue what to do when it came to the QB position.
@6400az ........But did the Eagles ever win with Gabriel at QB? I know they won with Jaworski but I don't recall them winning with Gabriel. However, I do agree with you that had the Rams had a better QB situation in those days they likely would've made it to the Super Bowl more often and probably even won it once or twice.
Nope, they did'nt win with him, wich is more the credit to Gabriel. He was with a lousy team and still managed to play well. He was voted comeback player of the year in 73'.
I still think the Rams should have kept Gabriel or Hadl. They had a couple of off years in the early 70's, but had they had veteran leadership at QB once they returned to the playoffs, it may have been a diffeent story for them.
@quincee33 ....Not right after. When Gabriel was traded after the 72 season, the Rams started a streak of 7 straight NFC West titles (73 thru 79) with John Hadl in 73, James Harris is 74, Harris and Ron Jaworski in 75, Harris and Haden in 76, Haden and Joe Namath in 77, Haden in 78, and then Ferragamo took over in 79 when Haden went down with an injury. Ferragamo took advantage of Haden's injury and led the Rams to Super Bowl 14. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong on all of this.
@quincee33 .........Your father's probably right.. A lot of people think that if Haden hadn't been injured in the middle of the 1979 season then the Rams wouldn't have made it to Super Bowl 14. While I'm not totally convinced of that I can certainly understand the argument. Ferragamo was certainly better than Haden.......at least for a while.
@6400az Dad's throwing shoulder and elbow as well as his knees were doing really bad. By then he had had multiple surgeries on his right knee and multiple surgires on his shoulder. Plus his disagreements with Rams management and the fact that Allen, who Dad respected deeply, was gone led to the inevitable trade. When Allen came back to LA, he wanted Dad to be a player/coach... but the bad blood between the Rams management and my Dad lead to him being let go.
Well thank you very much.I take it you are his son correct? Never new he had so many injuries. I admired Gabriel very much for the way he stood tall in the pocket, my sister on the other hand, was in love with the man. I do remember the Rams aquired Gabriel AND George Allen for a second go-around in 77 or 78?? . But non made it past the pre-season. The reason given for Gabriels' departure was he could'nt pass the physical...is that true??
@6400az Yes I am one of his sons. I think it was like 11 surgical ops on his right knee 5 on the left, 8 on his throwing arm. 69 He played with a fractured forearm on his throwing arm for most of the season. Plus we have a condition in our family that effects the knees. George wanted Dad to be a QB / Coach. From what my Dad told me, Carroll Rosenbloom did not like my Dad. So they had him take another physical and he failed the 2nd physical.
Wow, hearing it from you is more than insightful thanks. I had a knee operation last year and I still struggle with it, can't imagine that he coulds actually play with so many.
Was that really him with the post underneath or a quote ? Just too cool if Roman Gabriel is here on Youtube talking with us!!
Some time, would you ask him to talk a little bit about the 1969 playof game against the Vikings....a thriller of a game known as " The Fall of Romans Empire".
@6400az And the fact that George was a stick disciplinarian didn't sit well with some of the younger players. They protested to management and management caved in and got rid of George.
Gabriel and Kapp. Two of the great "tough nose" quaterbacks of the time. My privilege to see them both play in my youth. Diehard "Blue and White" Rams fan.
What most people don't know about Roman Gabriel that he is son of a Filipino immigrant. He is the first person of Asian ancestry to be a starting quarterback and one of the first minorities to shatter the the quarterback stereotypes. As much numbers he has racked up, I'm surprise that he has not been inducted in the HOF.
Great QB! In the early 60s, The Roman General was one of the earliest prototypes of the true big QB. I remember these mid 60s to 1971 games well. Diehard Rams fan since. Thanks for this pictorial tribute.
@derekphone10 Good, work harder than everyone else and never give up... thats what my Dad (Roman Gabriel) told me and my brothers when we were young, and I never forgot it.
