it is understandable, nowadays, why Brian Jones ended belly up (or was it face in ?) a swimming pool... He was not only a disturbance to the establishment but also totally politically incorrect... brash. bold, a bit arrogant, very self-confident. Jagger and Richards were in his shadow... almost nerd looking. Though he had potential for greatness, Jagger was second fiddle... here...
Interesting to see this interview with the Stones, with Brian Jones still around, and Keith Richards actually looking like he's naturally alive. I mean, these days it's hard to believe Keith is still alive considering the number of times he's been in and out of drug rehab.
Alexis Korner described Brian Jones as 'a wonderful mix of beautifully spoken politeness and unbelievable rudeness.' Lou Reed called him 'perfect Brian'.
Brian was never a cocaine or heroin addict. He WAS an alcoholic, and took quite a few pills during his day. He was only drinking wine and taking a couple of prescription drugs when he died. Neither drink nor drugs were the cause of his death. It's still a mystery to this day, but there is evidence that it was either manslaughter or murder.
Okay, again, I never mentioned anything about his death. All I wanted to know was what his drug of choice was. And apparently, I made the wrong assumption with cocaine or heroin.
he wasn't a junkie to begin with like janis who died of a heroin overdose, the autopsy report shows he was cleaned up towards the end and was not a hard drug user(junkie) ever,R' R Circus? Brian's slide guitar on No Expectations was awesome!
yes he was stoned out of his mind which is why he didn't notice he wasn't plugged in(LOL) but didn't seem to have no problem playing perfect slide guitar for someone supposely stoned out of his mind-nah i don't buy it-one can't play that precise if the are stoned out of their mind(HELLO)
I'm pretty sure I read that Brian was a big part of Donovan straying a bit farther from heavy drug use - being friends, he saw how intelligent Brian was as a person and how the -[funny, it's never dawned upon me until now that I have no clue which was Brian's main drug of choice - cocaine or heroin] drug just destroyed him.
Actually Brian was neither a cocaine or heroin addict nor was jimi Hendrix a druggie or junkie either like janis and Jim Morrrison were who were known heroin addicts.
Brian wasn't a junkie! No hard drugs were found in his system on the autopsy report,he left the band in june,Bill says Brian was auditioning musician's for his new band around the time he died,Brian's parents came to see him in may 69,his dad said he was really up and doing well & he was very upbeat when his dad called him 3 weeks before he died, yes testimonials of the witnesses don't add up,so it's mysterious how he died.
the stones didn't KICK brian out of the band he started. they the stones, mick, keith & charlie went down to see him at Cotchford farm in june and it was agreed that he would leave the band and get a settlement, one doesn't get offered a settlement if they are fired.
actually he wanted out, brian did have a problem with drinking not drugs and was working on that when he died.confused? the autopsy report showed that brian wasn't a druggie -that shouldn't be too confusing.read books where those who knew him talked about how he was than most books simular to hollywood gossip magazines that just rehash from other books and sensationalize events.
It is very clear from this one that the bad guy image of the Stones (at least in those early years) really came from Brian, in those days he was the only real bad boy. Sometimes people seem to forget and ramble on about Taylor's superb (without a doubt) guitar-work, but really it was Brian that made the Stones, started it, picked the R&B music mission which is the music that made them famous in 64 and is the man that polished many 66-67 Jagger-Richards compositions into the gems they are today.
You you are right, have you seen the pics in magazines in 79 or 80 when Mick had this big full beard in the time of the Emotional Rescue sessions? It really suited him than (he had to shave it off from Jerry Hall), and it will defenitly suit him NOW, as he's getting older he starts looking more and more like my auntie (apart from the skincolour)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I haven't seen really any pics of Mick or any of the Stones for that matter in the eighties, because to be honest I never really liked them after their sixties period. I always thought the Beatles were:
A) Much better looking (all of them)
B) Much more musically talented
C) Much more lyrically talented
D) Much more influential (Sgt. Pepper v. Satanic Majesties Requests, do we even have to debate this?)
Well, we can go into that childish who is better than who, but I prefer to leave it to the famous words of one of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century (Clint Eastwood) "opinions are like arseholes, everyone has got one".
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'm sure we could go into the childish who is better than who, but if you honestly think that Clint Eastwood is one of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth century, I think you've already committed intellectual suicide, and killed anything of value that you might have said.
Take it easy, the Beatles were #1 and the Stones were a distant #2, but #2 of all time nonetheless.
Music talent? Well, I think, in the sixties, George was the only Beatle with a lot of talent.
Lyrically? John and Paul were great when together, sure. But some people think it's complete crap.
Though more influential is agreed.
Actually, in the end, I don't know why people choose to compare them as much as they do. Two of my favorites, but with the exception of them both being pop bands in the sixties, they're very different.
Alright, I'll take the bait. The Stones were a much better live band than the Beatles. I don't know that Lennon/McCartney were better lyric writers than Jagger/Richards. People forget that Jagger/Richards wrote some nice lyrics - like Ruby Tuesday, Play With Fire, etc. What about Beggars Banquet, etc.? As for influence, I could point to countless bands that are directly influenced by the Stones. The Beatles have their duds too, like the Magical Mystery Tour.
Stones were better live, this is true and silly to debate over. I think equally silly to debate over is whether Lennon/McCartney were greater lyricists than Jagger/Richards. Ruby Tuesday, Play with Fire- many people have never heard of those songs. Find someone who hasn't heard of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, or Strawberry Fields Forever.
Find me someone who doesn't recognize "Satisfaction" or "You Can't Always Get What You Want". But you're right that the Beatles had/have broader appeal. But that's not something that's comparable. The Stones best album is arguably Exile on Main Street - which says something about the sort of appeal they were going for (or not going for).
So is the question: Who was better? Or who wrote songs that more people know?
Rolling Stones (Keith Richards) have more integrity. Because they stuck with what they loved, Black blues. Yes, they lost it for a while and did Angie, and Shes a Rainbow -- but that was just the acid talking.)
John Lennon was a self-actualized human being. As was George Harrison. Ringo is a cool dude. Good drummer. Paul is, and has always been, an embarrassment. Martha My Dear? Honey Pie? She's Leaving Home? What?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You're right, Paul is such an embarrassment. Songs like "Yesterday" and "Let it Be" and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band" didn't help to advance the Beatles' music and rock music in general. Gheesh.
What salvaged MacCartney were things like Helter Skelter, Yesterday, Abbey Road, Blackbird, etc. quite a melodist of sorts to whom Sir George Martin gave a continuity... She's leaving home is an absolute masterpiece b.t.w. though not a rock song...
She's Leaving Home is a classic for sure. Paul could write a song about anything - he's a magical lyricist - methinks McCartney/Lennon & Jagger/Richards did a deal concerning devils and souls! ;-)
