What was the name of that theatre? I saw it there too. Some where in downtown Jo'berg.... Listening brings back happy memories of the best days of my life. I've been trying to find the track of the song Egoli also from this musical.
Gives me goose bumps also. I was lucky enough to see the original play in Johannesburg in the mid 70's. What an awesome play, what awesome music! I miss it very much.
At last.... I saw Ipi Tombi live on stage in Jo'berg back in the 70's ....I wore out my record of Ipi Tombi playing it over and over. Loved this song and 'Egoli' the best. Thanks for posting this!

I found this CD for sale in the CDshop at Johannesburg International Airport when I was returning home to the UK. My little three year old now knows all the songs by heart and specifically asks for it to be played in the car so that she can sing along on long journeys. As soon as it starts she just beams and sings along as loud as her little voice can! Now that I see the show is available on DVD I'll endeavour to get that for her! She sings in Arabic, Spanish, Xhosa and Zulu too. Hugs. xx

@teewoods Dude I have been looking for the Digger for ages. It was on youtube for a short time but the uploader removed it. If you come across, please, please inform me also. Thanks and God Bless you.
I saw the stage show in Las Vegas in the late 70's and it is my favorite ever. I had the tape until it was stolen along with my stereo by some stupid druggie who worked at my office. I miss the music more than the $300 stereo.
me to was completly overwhelmed by there show in london, was only ten,but now 30 odd years later i'va ''choclat''baby and thinking of moving to AFRICA,1 of thees days
My parents took my siblings and I to see them live in Lagos Nigeria. 30 years later, it's still fresh in my mind. One of the most awesome performances I have ever seen.
Hey!!! I went to see Ipi Ntombi in the 70s with my uncle when they came to Zambia!! Also saw them perform in the UK years later on. Fantastic performance - loved the gum boot dance, sho sholoza, etc, etc!! Ahhh down memory lane I have gone just being reminded of them!! Woner what happened to the group?
Where can I get the original singers on CD? All the ones I find are remakes and I want the true original (if they still produce it) We used to have tape but would love to get a digital copy do they sell it on itunes or something? Plz let me know!
It's now the song of motivation from the german soccerteam. They hear it, when they go by bus to the stadium. First time the hotel staff sung it to the team.
The Intro is the best version of Shosholoza I've ever heared!
Strong leadvoices and a well balanced chorus. Wooow.
But the rest - sorry - is nothing special for me. Too much "non african" instruments play the melody. The same problem like the version of Helmut Lotti: it sounds not "native african".
i rememeber my parents taking us to the National theatre in LAGOS to watch this way back then, .ipi tombia i to bi ya.............. my dad bought the double album as well, i wonder where they all are now........ O SA ...O SA OH!!........
I was 12 when this great band performed in Lagos during Festac. What I remember vividly is the erotic dance of Ipi Tombi dancers and I enjoyed every moment of it. Could someone tell me about another musicians whose name, I think, is Miata Fambula(e). Where is she now?
Honestly, this should be made the official song of the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa.....there's no other like it. Brings back memories of the good old days. My uncle played these songs days on end during a wedding ceremony we attended in Aba, Nigeria. I was only a little boy!
@strafebiggy Totally agree - there should of been some of these tracks somewhere in the opening of closing ceremonies - music that makes my heart dance,,,
@strafebiggy Iagree with you ! I didn't really apreciate that WAKA WAKA song of shakira! Something wasn't right to see her singing with african on the backgroung! Culturaly ,its did not fit.Nothing racial.Just cultural ! Do you image a world cup in brazil where a Chine singer will sing the official song in chinese?
This is the original song. I remember from Festac 77 and my late uncle had the 2 record album. I knew every song on that album. The memories are quite vivid.
This is the oiginal sound. I still remember this from festac 77 in Nigeria and my uncle had thedouble album. I knew all the songs on the album. The memories are quite vivid.
Yup. Most certainly agree with you Mayfairfarm. I also had the great privilege of seeing the original and there is no doubt this is it. When something is so good it's hard to forget.
If I may say so.......this sounds exactly like the original version that I saw in Johannesburg SA in 1975. (I was 13) I will never ever forget this show or the voices in it or the country it came from. This must be the original. We bought the vinyl album and I listened to it about a million times I'd recognize it anywhere! Listening to this show still and always will give me a special feeling that nothing else does. I love it and miss SA even after all these years.
when the men had to work and dig and they were exhausted and missing home what they did was because some had no radios maybe they used to sing and then for the instruments they used what they had which was their working boots at the time and it sounded good.
somehwere in 1980 ive seen this musical 3 times and i had contact with the leader of this musical Joe Mugabe(spelled wrong) Anyways. i can tell you im a proud owner of the orginal vinyl soundtrack from 1971. im still playing it. thank you for posting
