my favorite professor at UConn was from somewhere along the Penobscot River, closer to the coast, and he loved to talk about Maine. He definitely spoke like this. His voice was raspy and he had a definite story-teller quality to his voice.

why does everybody from away think that is the "official" Maine accent ? Only people on the coast / islands or near the coast sound like that . At least a third of Maine's population is French with most of it in The County & isolated pockets throughout the rest of the state .

It gets even stricter out on the islands. I was born on the mainland, and my island neighbor always referred to me as being from away because I wasn't born on the island!

Born in Mass, back n fourth from There to Maine ever since, went to Highschool in Maine, I am from Maine, and Mass, now why do the older folk get mad when I say im from Maine, they say no ur not, n I say yup im a masshole from Maine, thats how i explain it, and dont they get sum pissed bout it, Ive live just as much of my life in Maine as I ever did in Mass, Maine n Mass NEED to get along!!
