Almost all martial arts have techniques that will be of great benefit in a self defence situation you just have to be smart enough tomutilise the skills effecively. This grand master along with a select few others at the time where selected to promote the art around the world they trained old school meaning hard ! some of the people quick to judge the ineffectiveness of the art would have absolutely no idea of how hard these masters trained they taught members of the armed forces
whoever that is who commented before me doesnt know anything about taekwon-do (they spelt it wrong for a start! its "taekwon-do", not "tae kwon do".) i assure anyone looking at this that Taekwon-Do is not useless, the only way it is useless is if you dont train hard enough and just meander along. if practiced properly Taekwon-Do is lethal.
And thanks for posting these videos from "Taekwon-Do Pioneers" do you have any more that you could post? i would appreciate it. thank you for reading.
not as lethal as its masters think, spar with enough contact arts fellas and youll see none is seriously hurt unless a great mismatch in skill or size occurs.I mean there have been elbows, knees, soccer kicks, bare knuckles and no trauma related deaths yet.Humans can take a lot of punishment.
Add in throat, groin, and eye attacks and you would disagree. Those who train to maim and kill will always have the edge against someone who doesn't. You see it all the time in UFC, a groin shot, they drop, an eye poke, they drop... Just imagine if they took a full force punch or knife hand to the throat... or an intentional eye gouge... too many people disregard the point of MARTIAL arts.
you cant train to maim or kill, thats fantasy, those techniques would always be pulled and so unrealistic.Combat sports such as mma are the closest thing to reality with acceptable safety.Throat and groin shots were allowed in the first few ufc, they made no difference .
@billysue2 Not a single person used throat shots in the first UFCs, and they were wearing cups when they were taking those groin Shots. And believe me there's a huge difference in taking a groin shot with a cup on and without a cup.
@UndeadPyro they werent able to use them but were allowed. If you cant land a punch you cany land a throat strike.True about the groin shots but again, you cant test it effectively so its supplementary to combat sports training techs and methods.
@billysue2 Throat strikes are easy as shit to land. Who the fuck are you kidding? Do you even have any training? Also, the groin strike is easy to effectively test. Put a cup on and have someone kick you or ridge hand you in the groin as hard as they can. Then take the cup off and have them do the same thing. BOOM. Effective Test.

Tea Kwon Do, an absolutly useless defending/attacking martial art. Blocks that'll break your bones and a "kick the gun out of the hand" philosophy. Learn some patterns, woopie doo.
Jong Park was the best of his time in S. Korea. That's why he was selected by the government to promote Taekwondo overseas. Unfortunately, nobody appreciates his greatness today in S. Korea. Ironically, those who were couple levels below him in his time are now regarded as WTF's (What The Fuck) greatest GRANDMASTERS.
i remember meeting master park in toronto in 1978 at the international tkd tournament a long with many other great tkd masters.i believe my instructor said he served in vietnam with him.
LOOK HE DID KARATE DEFENCE, just later Gal Choi modificated the defences and the base, in that time ITF was very new and very similiar with karate yet...
I don't know the guy on the left, but the other one is Grandmaster Park Jong Soo. I can tell you 30 years after he is as fast as he used to be in this video.
its not sparring of any kind another term would describe it better.Theres some good fighters in tkd due to huge numbers doing it but there training methods are terrible for developing sparring or self defence. Those who are capable emerged due to their natural attributes and would be good if they tained in any sparring style.

@UndeadPyro as ive already said, landing throat shots demands exactly the same timing as any headshot which can only be learned by sparring.

This is called Model sparring in the ITF. Yuo'll notice he does the technique at full speed and then slow to show what techniques he used.

Is it model sparring? I thought model sparring had more than one attack and one defense. This looks more like one step sparring to me.
