I'd like to speak in defense of the caged free speech area: I think the dirty word that motivates this level of security is "assassin". The Obama campaign has not disclosed the number of death threats he has received, but I would be surprised if it was anything less than a lot.

This is a tough one. If there is not enough room to house arrestees the police will become busy with trying to arrange safe detention and not be able to effectively respond to other unrelated emergencies such as robberies or domestic violence calls. Having a detention area is not a bad idea as long as there is careful oversight and supervision. Video should be kept to document any wrongdoing by police or aresstees.

I think this issue is taken waaayyy out of control. When you have a big event such as this it is responsible to have police and or security on site for more efficiency. If the stuff were to hit the fan i would prefere the police be there in site to handle it and defuse it. The First Ammendment says that the right of people to peaceably assemble to petition the government shall not be ABRIDGED.
