I've been going through a JRPG renaissance and I'm loving every minute of it. I was either not alive or an infant when these games came out and now I'm playing them all on DS. DQ 4 and 5, FF4, and Chrono Trigger, as well as new one that feel like older classics such as DQ9 (the graphics make it new, but the gameplay is still the same) and Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume. I'm so glad the DS exists, oh the catching up I've done with it.
I'm european and all these old JRPG never came out in Europe (FF7 is the first FF released in Europe, DQ8 the first DQ). I played FF1/2/4/5/6 on PSX but it was in English and I didn't understand English at the time (and I hate play Roms, always bad translations)
Now I can play the old FF/DQ/CC thanks to the GBA and the DS.
And when I see how are the new JRPG (FF13 for exemple, a real piece of shit), I'm glad to have all these RPG "old school"
Have the people, who created DQ, thought about making the games for Xbox or PS3 since we are now moving further into more advance tech.? I remember my father and I playing the DQ 1-4 games on Nintendo and introducing him to the DQ 8 since he never used a PS2 before...what a great way for father and son to bond.
@triedge132 Yes. Find an emulator (I suggest CoolRom.com) and a rom file of DQ5, download both, put them in the same folder. Run the emulator and click the game file. It'll be Japanese, so you might want to find a translation patch. If you've never done anything like this before, I apologize if it sounds confusing.

I've been playing the heck out of DQ9, but when I'm done with it I won't really have any other new games to play on my shiny 3DS(not interested in any 3DS games so far). I think I'm gonna try to get DQ4, 5 and 6, DQ is a great series for sinking in as much time as possible.
@rogerrnt1990 not so sure about vi. I only played the NoProgrss translation, which wasnt complete, but there are times during the game that there's is seriously NO way to know what to do unless you consult a faq
@MentosMan727 I'm playing the DS one right now,almost at Mudo's(or Murdaw) castle. Great translation so far,with lots of Talk command dialogues like DQ7.
@rogerrnt1990 Yeah the English fan translation made it near impossible to play. I did finish it and it was a good game, though. I played 5, 6 and 7 for the first time in the last year (just started 7 a week ago) and I would say that 5 was by far my favorite. Previously, it was 2 which I feel was pretty underrated.
Out of the DQ releases on the DS (excluding the spinoffs) V is easily my favorite , followed by IV. IX was only okay and VI doesn't really have a good story and offered almost no innovation.
I saw Dragon Quest V at my local Walmart about 4 months ago. I told my self to wait on it. Cause they had 2 copies. Then when I went back two weeks to buy it, it was sold out.I didn't realized that it was so rare now. It ended up costing me about 50 bucks on ebay. I'm glad I got a copy now. I know the price will continue going up.
DQ4 is reasonably priced. why exactly does this game go for around $60 wherever i look now? i remember seeing it at the store for the typical $40... i wasn't very moved by 8 so i didn't bother until 9 came out, which i am enjoying right now. oh well.

I don't get the hype going with this game... I've played every one of the Dragon Quest games, and this one definitely isn't one of my favorites... I get that people like the Monster Recruiting, and I guess it's kool that your kids actually look different depending on your wife, but story is almost nonexistant, and there is no great evil until you've almost gotten to the end... Someone please tell me why this game is so popular. And I'm not trying to hate, I'm just assuming I've missed something.

I love the first 9 Final Fantasy games because they are traditional RPG's, you know, random encounters and a lot of grinding... I loved that about them. I've wanted to try Dragon Quest for years, but with me living in England they weren't released originally. I'm planning on getting the DS remakes and number 9. I have got Dragon Quest VIII, but I;ve not got around to playing it yet.
@widdowson91 If you haven't played DQVIII yet, you'll be pleasantly surprised how rich and delightfully old-school the game is. Level-5 knows how to make expansive worlds in their rpgs.

@13nbui Well I agree on the post-X FFs being bad, but FFI-FF10 are great (possibly excluding FF: Mystic Quest, which is just decent, and maybe FFII which can be very frustrating for some people).
@Laurelindo I don't hate FF- it just doesn't hold a candle to the game mechanics, and it lacks the zoom spell. Plus, FF went all sci fi, and the FMVs look TOO real, almost alien-like. Plus, DQ sticks to turn based- far superior to ATB bars or limit breaks requiring specific button inputs or having to unearth an exact strategy to kill a boss or else you die in one round.

@DarknessD42 Dude, look into emulation. You can play this 3 ways- original SFC fan translated, PS2 translated, or get a copy of the FIXED DQ5 DS (fixed means a patch that overides the copyright protection and your ship ride in the beginning won't last forever). Are you old enough to have a checking account? If so, get a Visa check card- functions like a credit card, just instead drawing money from your account.
I've only just ordered this game from Amazon as I was looking at playing a good RPG on the DS. I've never played a DQ game before, but after reading so many positive things about it I just had to pick it up. Besides, I wanna get into the DQ world before DQ VI hits on the DS.
I don't say this often enough but I do believe dragon quest is better than ff but the let down is that there aren't too many dq games but it is way better than the ff games but I'll say this ff7 is the best and ff4 was good but I like all dq and ff games but I just believe dq is way better in every way.
i love that they made these remakes especially 5 and 6 since we never officially got them, but that they use the engine from dragon quest 7 from the ps1 which is one of my all time fave console rpg's. i cant wait until dq 6 comes out. i always wanted a gba cart that had dq 5 and 6 on it but we never got it.
its a mazing game, not to much fancy shit, but the whole feling, the music the humor, the ennemys breaht the Dragon Quest style.The story is also quit enttertaining. lots of items. i realy like DQ great games, and far more poplair in Japan than FF.
I've got 9 and 6, love them both! So much to do in 9, with 6 being a challenge along with the fun monster party members

Hand of the Heavenly bride story is great and somewhat tragic for most of time.
For sure the most mature DQ ever released (you even get married,have children,etc)and very funny too,but I can't help to like DQVI,VII and VIII more.
IX and IV are damn good too.

@SHIBBYiPANDA Id say it's okay, but the single play is not nearly as good as in other Rpgs. You can really feel that the Multiplayer aspect took a big part in the game, for example with the not so good developed or character based storyline, lots of lots of grinding, many looting, collecting and Crafting . It feels like an MMorpg sometimes. If you like that kinda stuff, it's worth playing. If you are more interested in Story and Characters better get one of the other DQ's

I love the first 9 Final Fantasy games because they are traditional RPG's, you know, random encounters and a lot of grinding... I loved that about them. I've wanted to try Dragon Quest for years, but with me living in England they weren't released originally. I'm planning on getting the DS remakes and number 9. I have got Dragon Quest VIII, but I;ve not got around to playing it yet.

@widdowson91 If you haven't played DQVIII yet, you'll be pleasantly surprised how rich and delightfully old-school the game is. Level-5 knows how to make expansive worlds in their rpgs.

@widdowson91 you need to play dragon quest 5. it has a fantastic story. dragon quest 9 was fun to play but was rly lacking on the story :/ like rly badly. dragon quest 4 but its too similiar to every other rpg game. go collect party and save the world. dragon quest 5 was awsome cuz its not like most rpg games. I RLY RLY SUGGEST EVERYONE TO PLAY THIS GAME!

@13nbui Well I agree on the post-X FFs being bad, but FFI-FF10 are great (possibly excluding FF: Mystic Quest, which is just decent, and maybe FFII which can be very frustrating for some people).

@Laurelindo I don't hate FF- it just doesn't hold a candle to the game mechanics, and it lacks the zoom spell. Plus, FF went all sci fi, and the FMVs look TOO real, almost alien-like. Plus, DQ sticks to turn based- far superior to ATB bars or limit breaks requiring specific button inputs or having to unearth an exact strategy to kill a boss or else you die in one round.

@DarknessD42 Dude, look into emulation. You can play this 3 ways- original SFC fan translated, PS2 translated, or get a copy of the FIXED DQ5 DS (fixed means a patch that overides the copyright protection and your ship ride in the beginning won't last forever). Are you old enough to have a checking account? If so, get a Visa check card- functions like a credit card, just instead drawing money from your account.

I've only just ordered this game from Amazon as I was looking at playing a good RPG on the DS. I've never played a DQ game before, but after reading so many positive things about it I just had to pick it up. Besides, I wanna get into the DQ world before DQ VI hits on the DS.

I don't say this often enough but I do believe dragon quest is better than ff but the let down is that there aren't too many dq games but it is way better than the ff games but I'll say this ff7 is the best and ff4 was good but I like all dq and ff games but I just believe dq is way better in every way.

i love that they made these remakes especially 5 and 6 since we never officially got them, but that they use the engine from dragon quest 7 from the ps1 which is one of my all time fave console rpg's. i cant wait until dq 6 comes out. i always wanted a gba cart that had dq 5 and 6 on it but we never got it.
