  • Microbursts are scary because they're completely unpredictable and can be as powerful as a high-end EF2/low-end EF3 tornado. there's no way to know when or where they'll strike. Tornadoes, at least, are somewhat predictable. We usually have a pretty good idea about where they'll form and when.

The NWS will sometimes tornado warn the front of a derecho (fast-moving storm with multiple downbursts that produce straight line ground winds), because the winds are that dangerous.

  • whats so micro about that!?! :O

  • I lived at 11th and New York when that microburst hit. My wife and I were woken up by debris hitting the side of the house. My wife turned on the Weather Channel and it said we were in a tornado warning. I was looking outside when she turned on the TV and saw crap blowing around in a circular motion. We thought for sure it was a tornado.

That was a pretty intense morning. Our house had minor damage. A great way to be woken up on a Sunday morning!

  • I think the chick summed it up

"the fuck is going on here?"

  • I woke up and it was bright outside, and then it suddenly became dark and being the poor college student I was didn't have cable, so I called my mom across town to see what the weather was doing and she said to take shelter and the wind started whipping around, she couldn't see across the street due to the wind and debris...I would have SWORN it was a tornado, and then they said it was a microburst.

  • I was at Haskell University and the wind was SO loud, it woke me up! I looked outside and saw debris flying everywhere and hitting cars in the parking lot near my dorm...It was...unforgettable

  • when you saw the usbank sign at 3:00 i was across the street hiding in a building it was scary.

  • Has anyone seen the car that was cut in half by a tree in this storm?

  • i don't think this is called a microburst if the whole of the town was "leveled" i think they call it a Derecho look it up on wikipedia it sounds alot like wt this has done.

  • dude i was on a campout wen this happened and when i woke up the the hole place was trashed. my nieghbors basketball goal was totaly gone. and on the way home i saw a hugebrick wall on a building fall down it was so crazy

  • I live in Lawrence and remember that. What I was amazed by was the wide spread damage, it wasnt just one little part of town that got damaged but the whole city was damaged! somw bad other parts less severly

  • i was a sleep when it happen i didnt wake up once but it was scarry to walk out side and see my tree over on the ground next to my car

  • If I can find it, I'll post the Checker's security camera of the micro burst. Shopping carts take off in every direction!

  • i woke up and then i saw a dark gray cloud and i was scared

  • I was at my apartment and then my cousin woke me up i was like woah what happend

  • it was strange 2 see it on the news... cuz i live over in west lawrence and there wasnt a microburst over there... so yea

  • I went to sleep with my window open. when i woke up, the blinds where flapping like crazy and the tree outside my window was practically touching the ground. I freaked out and thought it was a tornado and ran for the storm cellar. I tried to wake my roommate, but he didn't wake up. i left him there.

  • funny

  • I had just woken up, and looked out the window to gray skies, and then as I was putting on my shirt, the trees in about 4 seconds I wasnt looking, they were completely horizontal.

  • i was at a friends house when this happened, we all thought it was a tornado

  • Are microbursts really that dangerous?

  • All Kansas Weather is dangerous.. are you kidding me? look it up in wikipedia if you doubt thee claim.

  • hahahaha i remember this i lived at Naismith my car got fucked up from this thing that fell of the roof...it was really tight though because the hawk lost power which means no frigdes which means free beer that day

  • After that happened the people with no damage to them or their houses just walked and drove around....a tree fell on my porch, I think everyone was just in Awe (or however you spell it) all day.

  • what's a microburst? I'm from NY so I dont know these things

  • I was driving when this hit and a BBQ flew through my drivers window and hit me while I was on Mississippi street... Good times!

  • I remember living at Templin, and the huge AC generator at the top fell down. And all the cars in the parking lot had their windows blown out. It was crazy.

  • Thanks for this video. I live in Lawrence and remember that day all too well. We were spared the worst of the damage, but my oldest son still describes what it looked like, "Everything was horizontal"

  • oh dear todays friday the 13th be ware and karefull

  • TORNADO BLACKOUT DAY haha when people found out there were no classes the next day there were parties everywhere

  • I live in TX now, but I lived in Lawrence at that time. I used to own Big Daddy Cadillac's Tattoos. We were out that morning to check damage. We got lucky. Not a scratch. The Replay got smacked pretty good, just two doors down from us. Those bleachers at the beginning were just a block from my house. What a mess! Thanks for the footage.

  • It was kind of mess - but leave it up to lawrence to wake up survey the damage, crack open a beer and take it all in stride. Thanks for the feed back.

  • i can see my old house from here!
