  • Yes. Acually, they're saying 1.1 billion gallons now, I think. It's not a coal mine, but rather a coal PLANT, where they burn coal for electricity. Not really prcariously near by, it's right on the water. About five yards of dirt between the river and the coal ash pond. (They wet the fly ash to prevent it from getting the air.) Also, coal ash is the same thing as fly ash. It wasn't just a lot of rain, but really cold, too. About 23F right when it happened. And you got the date wrong.

  • @MusicallyMentalWings Ran out of room. I'm sorry, I feel like I'm trolling. I'm not, rather correcting you.

It occured at about 3am on Dec 23. And they did report it about 2 hours after it happenened. Nashville is a little far out for local news. Harriman is a little middle of nowhere town. It acually knocked over a couple of nearby houses too. I tested the water myself last October, and I found some interesting levels myself. It is fucking horrible. >3>'' I hate TVA. Always have, always will.

  • It is pronounced Harriman, TN. I was born there. TVA has been raping this area for years. My family is cancer stricken, and it seems that cancer is very predominant in this area. I've also seen studies that cancer in this area is well above the national average in this area.

  • I respect your feel for this,

    but keep in mind,

Industry is only 4% of pollution on the planet, MOST of our pollution is from cars. actually 78% of it, so you should create a video on that.

and when fly ash enters other substances, such as water, or even air, most of it evaporates, which is one of the thing's that causes acid rain, which happens A LOT in Seattle. So really, the water was probably ok, but, I respect your warning.

  • good lord get it right.. no one thinks about where they are gonna get their power if they shut down tva... better buy you some candles

  • You need to get your facts straight before you go saying things. You've got part of the story and a whole lot of what you said is bogus.

  • fucking tree hbuggers need to go fuck yourself and leave kingston alone.

  • thx did a report for school on this

  • This is one of the most falsified videos I have ever seen. I live about 15 minutes from where the ash spill happened and everyone is doing fine and the whole talk of cancer and sickness is retarded. Also you probably didn't find any information on it since you didn't even know the name of where it happened. This is typical from liberal hippies, never report any of the facts, just what you choose to believe. Good propaganda video though. Hippie douchebags.

  • joshill23 you have absolutely no clue what you are talking about. I lived downwind of a coal-fired paper mill while I was pregnant, and my son has Asperger's Syndrome. That was from the "normal" mercury pollution, not an industrial accident!

  • Umm...ok, thanks for your insight.

  • joshill23 Thanks for being receptive. Here is some more insight. If you have any loved ones and friends who are pregnant or are babies or small children please advise them to move away from that accident area permanently. The damage this industrial accident will do to them is irreversible.

  • joshill23 What has happened in the TVA area is a deadly serious catastrophe. Please watch what happened to babies/small children in the Minamata industrial accident of Japan in 1956:

    /watch?v=uDwhQU_EPLY

  • I have several friends who live around the area and they can do whatever they want. It is really awful that your child has a sickness, but are you able to know for a fact what it was caused from?

  • joshill23 Your friends are in danger for their health and their unborn babies could have birth defects if they stay in the area. Autism is caused by contact with mercury, especially when it makes contact with developing brains such as fetuses in the womb. Mercury is a neurotoxin by-product from the coal-fired plant and paper mill industries. A study in Canada's University of Calgary shows how mercury causes brain neurodegeneration:

  • Well it's their decision and if it was me living right by it I probably would not be too concerned about it either. Their hasn't been any reports from that area about kids becoming as long as I have lived here and I don't expect anything to change in the future.

  • joshill23 I doubt you really know actual statistics of birth defects in the area, it would be interesting to find out though. And its going to be much worse now that this coal ash disaster gets in the ground water. Its not "their decision" to live in an area now contaminated by a catastrophe to the land , water and air. No one "decides" to live in an area hit by this sort of thing, they just happen to be there when it occurs. Hopefully govt will condemn area & declare it uninhabitable.

  • OMG! Amazing video! Iwatched a few vids on this and this one by far is the best and most informative. Just the audio is way too low.Other than that 5 stars!

  • Okay you live in new york! Not Tennessee. We heard about the spill the next the people that live in tennessee was the the first people to find out. And as for you video, WE have NO mine. We have a Coal plant. And its Harriman, TN.... I feel really bad for the people that lost their homes and personal belongings. If I can help any of you in anyway I will. I live about 25 miles from the Kingston Coal plant. Girl, you live in NEW YORK!! Learn your stuff before you broadcase.......

  • I do find it amazing that we are having so many problems with these coal mines seeing as how there really isn't any in Harriman or Kingston. It's kind of odd that you say kids in West Va. are having teeth problems yet you said nothing about kids in Tennessee having those problems. Oh wait, probably because you're claim is unsubstantiated. Good try though. Go get some better info before posting again and making yourself look like a complete fool.

  • you have no clue what you are talking about. coal built america if you dont have coal you dont have steel period. so why would you bitch about something when you have no clue. tva gives people thousands of jobs so yea lets drop some law suits on them so they lay off hundreds of people to pay for those law suits. every one drink their water only people in roane county tn have to worry but im pretty sure we have breathed that shit in for 50+ years anyway so who gives a shit!!!

  • Continued from below:

    3) "Harrington, Tennessee"

    Is actually Harriman, Tennessee

    4) is a "huge caol mine"..there is no mine at the plant, much less a huge one. 5)"TVA is the coal miner's representative voice"

This is just flat out incorrect,.. The TVA owns and runs the Kingston coal plant. They do not work for "the coal miners" 7)"I know people who live around like Nashville, and they say it asn't been on the news"..It was on the news the next day, again, it was VERY poorly covered as usual

  • I do thank you for representing your concern with this video, and I am glad that you care. However, there are some facts in your video that are not corect.

    1) "nobody reported it"

It was, in fact reported on the local (knoxville, Tennessee) news the following morning. However, it was very poorly covered.

    2) "Coal ash is a naturally occuring waste product"

Coal ash is a waste from the burning of coal. Coal is not burned in nature, therefor, it is not natural. It is a man made product.

  • On the bright side of the situation, we now have three major creeks stopped up and it has flooded some good duck hunting ground. FORGET THE DEAD FISH, IM KILLING ME SOME DUCKS!!! By the way, its Harriman not Harrington and there are no coal mines here, just a power plant that supplies electricity to East Tn at a good rate, IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. Were going GREEN (green heads).

  • Another thing I'd like to point out is something that was referenced in this video: TVA is DEFINITELY taking advantage of the fact that Tennessee has one of the WORST education systems in the country, and is deluding its citizens-- members of my family included. Half of the people IN Roane County (where the spill happened, and also where I live) are only vaguely aware of the spill itself.

    Something is horribly wrong here.

  • I live here, too, drummerzx--not ten minutes from what used to be the pond. They're saying that our water's fine, but, like NeilSagan said, fish and wildlife are dying.

Some people from UT came to get some samples the other day and had to nearly fight off TVA reps to get at it. They REALLY didn't want the university to get those samples, which says enough for itself.

All I can say is: I'll be drinking bottled water for awhile. :(

  • They are also claiming the fish are dying because they were washed up on shore not because of toxic water. That claim stated on CBS news clip I watched on YouTube.

  • Thank You for the truth!!!!

Really how stupid do they think we are? They found no toxins in the water?

Don't trust the news Viacom owns CBS, General Electric own NBC and Disney owns ABC. The same corporations that own or are involved with the companies that are screwing the environment and people. It's all about the money.

  • Well i fucking live here and i get to see this shit everyday. Sludge everywhere. Guess i really did get coal for fucking christmas lo.

  • Hey there. Thank you for spreading this extremely relavent information. I'll be passing it on in a bulletin along with a news article tat Jack Here posted on Myspace.

  • Thanks for addressing this. We at United Mountain Defense have been fighting TVA on many issues for years. Sad to say, but we knew something like this was bound to happen. We will be continuously posting videos on our youtube channel: annebonnylives check often and spread the word!

  • Phytoremediation can be defined as the decontamination of soil, sediment or water using plant growth. Industrial hemp, Cannabis sativa L., is renowned for its ability to grow rapdily. In one growing season, fibre hemp can yield 250 to 400 plants per square metre, with each plant reaching up to 5 metres in height. As a result, hemp has been identified as a plant with the potential to serve as a phytoremediator.

  • Coal can never/will never be clean. I fucking hate the coal industry.

  • anti persperant is another toxic scandal

  • and Justice for All... "metallica"

  • This can not be tolerated, action needs to start now!!! Are we just going to wait until thousands of people get sick or die before something is done? Call your congressman, governors, preachers, pastors, family, water works,EPA ,etc.,Get the word out, cause there is a media blackout on this disaster and that is a shame."With liberty and justice for ALL!"

  • Thank you for speaking out on this! I first learned of it only hours ago when I got my daily Alternet bulletin...the only report I've seen about this. I kept asking myself, how did I miss this in the news!! Go to Alternet on-line to read the article, if you haven't already. Thanks again for your post!!!

  • Ah, there's also a small report on it on some lj communities online. And I'll check out the Alternet bulletin. Thanks.

  • yeah, i guess this is a big deal... Awesome Christmas present from humankind.
