the thumb is a roman (italian) sign; when 2 gladiators fought and one is down the imperator make this sign tumbs down - mean to kill the guy that is down if the tumbs is up it means that he is saved

I thought the sign "thumbs up" was given for the gladiator who is still standing as an approval to kill the gladiator who is down. So "Thumbs up" is GOOD for the AUDIENCE but bad for the gladiator on the ground :P.
