Think of what was happening in America in the 1960s, and the opposite of that horror show was the voice of Joan Baez. But Joan didn't let people forget what was going on in Vietnam and Civil Rights. She used her great talent to motivate people to action. America needs to wake up and soon.

J'ai toujours senti une force extraordinaire dans la voix de Joan Baez, une force que j'ai rarement senti chez d'autres. Jacques Brel a ete comme cela, mais les chanteurs comme eux sont rare. Leur expression va vraiment dans le plus profond de l'ame, comme dans les gospels, mais en plus il y une force qui compelle a faire quelque chose pour changer le status quo, pour agir. Il n' y a rien de superficiel chez eux.

This song is an african america post civil war freedom song. It was written in the 19th century, Joan is only performing her own interpretation of it. I think people can appreciate both kinds of music. I really like this version.
