@GrayGhost2020 Yeah, he did. Randolph Carter was kind of Lovecraft's standin character for himself. In retrospect it would have been cool to have the character look like him.
We decided since we may or may not get to the other Randolph Carter stories that his dying would be a good way to wrap this one up. If we do get around to it, oh well, not too worried about the continuity :)
make a disc on short stoeies with this stryle its gona be way above the bar a weekly series who knows i would tune in people are mad with this kinda stuff now
Amazing job, one of my favorite Lovecraft stories, though it did feel rushed. Lovecraft slowly builds horror and an unsettling tone. Your animation style could attain this, you have the potential.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who loves this story. The first time I read it was right before I went to bed. You can imagine what a mistake that was
A brilliant idea, the style of animation plus the tone of your voice and the accent fit greatly into the atmosphere of the story. however, I feel it goes by too fast. It's a bit quiet and mumbly. let the words reverberate and let the images they bring linger in the mind of the listener/viewer. don't rush it. and enunciate.
I can't get over how awesome this is. I hope you're doing a bunch of these. It reminds me of the treatment Bernie Wrightson gave to 'Cool Air' in his old comic book.
I watched this one night before heading out to the movie theater. If you happen to live in a town that doesn't play a film unless it stars Nicholas Cage then you know where I'm at. I should have stayed home and watched this a few more times. High quality. Great editing. I'm rather chuffed about this.
@ShoggothLord Yeah, the thing is, there would not have been enough evidence to convict him anyway, no one saw what happened and there was no corpse, so yeah.
One of my favorite Lovecraft stories. This was an interesting take on it. My only nitpick is that I wish it would have been longer, allowing the viewer to savor the mood and horror of the various parts. Great job!
Addendum: Carter being on Death Row in the chair made it even more creepy; I just always imagined him in the interrogation room at a police headquarters.
Jesus. This story still chills my bones. It was only the second HPL story I read(after Dagon; I was suggested to read that first because it was so short), and the video is just as creepy as I imagined it in my head. I'd love to see more of these from you. =)
P.S.: This is just my opinion, but the nightmare fuel stories are the best, in my opinion, so if you get a chance, The Unnamable and Dreams in the Witch-House are two you should consider. =D =D =D
As a suggestion, "At The Mountains of Madness" would be the perfect choice for your next animation.
On a side note, I find ti somewhat disturbing that the voice at the end is missing when I play it on my iPod. The background noises, Randolph's voice, and everything else is there, except the "unknown"s voice. It's missing completely, while all other sounds (such as birds, etc etc) is still there. Is this happening to anyone else or is my iPod friggin' haunted?
@newgoblin36 You know, we uploaded this to another website and it had that problem there too. The voice is definitely the only part that doesn't show up, and we have no idea what the problem could be. I hope not too many people are having this issue- the end is kind of key!
@EldritchAnimation umm did you put the sound out of Phase with itself? cause that could be the problem. on a Stereo system it's no problem and this trick gives sounds a kind of eerie feeling like you can't place where the sound is coming from HOWEVER if you listen to the same sound in Mono you will hear absolutely nothing because the sounds are out of Phase. Check with your sound designer and see if he did this to "the Voice" lol. that could be why people don't hear it on certain systems.
yeah i did throw a phaser and a chorus on the unknown's voice. i didn't think about what would happen on a mono system. Still, I'm left wondering why it would be playing in mono on an ipod. i pods definitely play music in stereo...
I wonder if newgoblin36 downloaded the video and chose to create a file with mono audio without realizing it...?
@HistorianHimself well what i was talking about isn't an actual phaser per se. it involves making a duplicate of the voice and putting one of those sound files out of phase. pan those out left and right and you get the effect i'm talking about and the sound disappears in mono. i don't know if this is exactly what you did but i think that's what's happening
Awesome! I added 'The Terrible Old Man" to my favorites a year ago or so, and now this one. I simply love this short story - one of Lovecraft's most terrifying, in my opinion. Have you ever considered "The Color Out of Space" or "The Shunned House"?
I'm not one for Lovecraft, a master writer yes but a blithering idiot in my own personal opinion. He didn't like the Re-Animator...but that is just personal opinion iguess he was a mster of the craft and you do him more than justice with your animations as well as the acting.
hmmm...........I wonder........could you do the H.P. Lovecraft story "Dagon?" or did you already made plans for other animations, keep up the good work
@seanmatthewrosen@seanmatthewrosen I've been thinking on some ideas for the Outsider! I still haven't quite worked out how I'd do it though. Obviously you need to keep the only character hidden until the end, but I'm not sure I like a first person view for the whole film. Hm.
Perhaps the next logical step would be to do THE UNNAMABLE, another short with the character of Randolph Carter. Though you offed him in this incarnation you can set it up as a prequel (of which I'm certain Lovecraft had in mind anyway being that he is of sound mind during the beginning). Or perhaps THE TEMPLE? Much potential there.
MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS and INNSMOUTH are much more difficult to condense due to length. stick to shorts like THE HOUND or FROM BEYOND
Wow. Absolutely amazing job. I was a big fan of your "Terrible Old Man" video back when it came out, and this is even better. The voice at the end gave me shivers.

Damn! This IS better than The Terrible Old Man, not to say TTOM was bad, it was great! But this, this is really good, perfectly executed, great animation, nice atmosphere and once again, not a stone out of place in your adapting!
My only gripe is Warren's very first lines, they seemed a little rushed.
But other than that, I look forward to seeing a lot more of these!
Love the animation. Look forward to seeing more. The Colour Out of Space is one of my favorite HPL stories, but that would take a considerable effort to animate. But, it would be well worth it I'm sure.
@jlearys The Colour Out of Space is my favorite as well, and we're definitely going to do it at some point! It is long though, so we're holding off a little bit before tackling that one.

@MaxWriter I can definitely see where you're coming from. The problem is that lots of Lovecraft's work doesn't translate well to film (see pretty much any lovecraft movie made for proof). The "You Fool" line was an awesome end in the story, but in this it wasn't working out the same way on it's own, and having Randolph just go home was well... anticlimactic. We like to think that any changes we make to his work aren't as retarded as some of the ones I've seen in movies, haha.
@EldritchAnimation I can understand that. I'm a bit of a continuity nut and I hope you don't think this isn't the best adaptation of this story I've ever seen. It is. @cha5 - According to Joshi, DreamQuest happened before this. He studied with Warren after he had lost his ability to go to the dreamlands. The Silver Key is next.
@MaxWriter ~ I'd have to assume the governor's reprieve came through at the last second, or something eldritch happened. Or that this is just what Randolph is worried will happen, while he's giving his statement. Since they don't have a body, and there's no evidence Warren died, only that he's missing, Randolph cannot be charged with murder.
This may just be the moot ramblings of a Lovecraft fan but Carter doesn't die in this story. Infact, he went home to Boston and had a couple more adventures and eventually disappeared. Great animation though.
@ico3232 Agreed- during the planning stages for this one we found we had to make some kind of change. We found the short juuust didn't work with "and then Randolph went home".
So sweet Plz make more asap

This may just be the moot ramblings of a Lovecraft fan but Carter doesn't die in this story. Infact, he went home to Boston and had a couple more adventures and eventually disappeared. Great animation though.

@ico3232 Agreed- during the planning stages for this one we found we had to make some kind of change. We found the short juuust didn't work with "and then Randolph went home".
