This sounds an awful lot like "son of a preacher man" by Dusty Springfield which is a great song in itself. That being said, the changes in this song make it fantastic in its own right.
Ray, Idon't know-i doubt it-bu if you do ever check the comments on here, thank you so much forevery note that you play and every word thatyou sing you fill my soul with smiles and make my bad days good!!
@LeCutter i found him a coupla yrs ago and i couldnt blieve i hadnt heard of ray but i saw him at royal albertt hall fukin awsome and just gets better
I just wish he would take this and just fucking jam with it way longer. awesome. love the studio version just as much if not better but live is definately a treat!
R.e. the Otis Redding / Cocker comparisons, I love Otis Redding, have all his albums, live and otherwise, along with a very rare video of him. The first gig I saw Ray at was Bush Hall, absolutely tiny, and at the end of the acoustic version of this song that someone recorded (thankyou bootleggers!) someone shouted out "Otis Lives!"
And my mate who's just as into funk and soul thought he sounded like Joe Cocker. Are they right? Who cares, they're awesome singers, it's a compliment
i want to go see ray in concert, but i'm not that interested in the headliner he's playing with. i'd love to see him in a small club in the san francisco bay somewhere. he's the best since sliced bread.
If you have an opinion that's perfectly fine, but that doesn't mean you're right. and if you do some looking, I think you'll find that many more people have made the same comparisons to Cocker and Redding...
Holy Fuck......I get get goose bumps listening to this guy. I ain't gay either. But this guy can belt out a tune. WOW!!!! A+ Version for sure. A+ singer is more fucking like it.
Ray LaMontagne is by far one of the most talented and underrated artists out there. He has more talent than any of the mainstream artists that are engulfed in commercializing their music. I'm glad he's not a sell-out, so we can see and hear performances as pure and incredible as this!
I love how LaMontagne does amazing whether he has a band of 20 guys behind him or just him and an acoustic guitar and everywhere between. Now that's talent.
I believe this is his best piece, I say that because everytime this song starts, I uncontrollably close my eyes and start singing at the top of my lungs
I am very envious. Do you happen to know where this DVD can be purchased? I think this is one of the finest recordings I have ever seen and I thank the net for exposing me to it, but I sure would love to see the whole thing straight through.
that is what makes him so great. Otis Reading, Aurthur Alexander, Percey Sledge, Ray LaMontange, songs my dad listened too that were just soulful and wonderful, now someone as good in our generation
You got two negatives for this but I knocked you back up because trumpets take away from a lot of songs. Having said that, they managed to make me realize what it is I like about this guy...picture Otis Redding singing the songs Ray Lamontagne sings.
Oh I like this song alot. :) And the trumpets are not that bad in this either, although I don't think they fit particularly well with the mellow tones of the rest of the song.
But I don't know, I always think the trumpets are too loud and they overpower the other instruments.
I FINALLY found the entire BBC Four session and downloaded it. It's without a doubt the most amazing live video I've ever seen. Ray is awesome, but that ENTIRE BAND is just totally sick!
Ohhh, he has a level of eroticism that rivals anyone. He reminds me of the blues and rock-and-roll singers of the 1960s-1970s. That raspy voice, those lyrics, his passion...he just melts you.
@lucybells0 My sentiments exactly. "Gonna give it so you can't say no..." (!) Anyone else singing and this lyric might sound really crude, but he pulls it off with such raw passion-- it's indescribably seductive. *sigh* :)
I was expecting this live, but he hide to the side of the band, I was a tad let down. I loved the music, but I didn't witness him in his glory, living his music ,soul on sleeve. Guess all are due a bad day. He reminded me of how I like to perform. Hidden in the background .just singing and playing your soul,no lights/glory wanted. The sound will say it all . I wanted to experience this concert.but realize that it was a once in a life time event. Music Magic on stage,no feeling can compare.
you can't listen to this guy loud enough, very joe cocker-esque. i love to celebrate a big sale at work with ray lamontagne, joe cocker, and tom waits. I wish he would cover "sinnerman" by nina simone. i know he would bring real soul to that song and put a smile on nina's face
