  • Not every borderline has had a traumatic experience.

  • I can use telepathy - you want to make research on me. I am looking for someone to make research on my phenomena.

  • I have all of the qualifications for BPD. I have broken an arm and told family members that I did but they didn't belive I did because of my low key response to the pain.

  • The interpretation of todays society is enough to send some people into psychological trauma.

  • i was raped at 5 by two different people, and i always thought it was my fault growing up, i tryed telling my mum but she didnt believe me, but it never affected me about the whole being raped, just the guilt live on with me, and i suffer now with BPD and extreme social Anxiety , and i am over sexually active, doctors say its because of the rape, but it never bothered me, and im not close to my family, and i cant work or leave my room from anxiety is this make BPD worse?

  • It doesn't always have to be cutting, it could be hair pulling, punching yourself, or burning, my girl friend goes into a trance like state and bangs her head against walls or posts even. Of course I try and stop it.

  • I am bpd and I don't cut... I used to tho

  • This is one of the best more simple explanations of what happens in the brain that my therapist and I discuss. I find it very helpful.

  • It can be genetic, i was never abused and had a great life growing up, but the signs of me not being right started at about 5....i'm one of the lucky ones.

  • its not genetic, it comes from abuse in the first 3 years of the person's life.

instead of appriciate themselfs, they were forced to hate themselfs, feel unimportent that makes them disfunction and not develop like the other kids and see the world in a very negetive way.

  • @Vocod3r dont agree, my family history going back 3 generations, no, four says different.

  • Thank you firstly for putting your time into helping people like ourselves.....i was first diagnosed with manic depression then Bi-Polar....now regsistered disabled with bpd....very confusing

  • Is it ok to frequent prostitutes during these 8 weeks?

  • well your german is hopefully better, dr. schmaal!!! wenn sie interviews über so ein sensibles thema geben, dann bitte deutsch!!! sie könnten sachen sagen, die sie nicht so meinten....

  • I would love to study at Karolinska!

  • Not every borderline cuts.

  • yeah, it would be interestig to find out if the borderliners who don't self-harm also are less sensitiv to physical pain.

  • when I'm in what my nut nurse refers to as 'a heightened emotional state', I don't really feel pain, or rather I'm unaware of it at that time.

  • i have cutt a few times but the last frw years i have sleeved my arms with tattoes. i believe it is the same, i feel no pain i i sit in my brothers chai for 18 hours being drilled on. The sense of calm is like medication to m mind.

  • I'm a non-cutting BPD, and I have a huge pain tolerance. I don't know if it's from the USMC or just from the disorder, but I can with stand a masive amount of pain.

  • @bubb1etea lols tell that to a woman in labour, take care

  • @naemasufi I have 2 children ;)

  • @bubb1etea true say

  • @bubb1etea he knows that.. doctors in germany know that.. don´t worry..

  • Who are these people who infer that there is something intrinsically wrong with someone's personality 'personality disorder' is an extremely insulting concept.

What bullcrap 'reduced pain sensitivity' quite the opposite is true.

Please try to remember that Socrates had a 'disorder' and yet he gave us one of the best systems to deal with human conflict in the history of mankind.

What have you done Mr Psychiatrist - apart from make the drug companies rich?

  • Would your opinion be the same if it came from a neuroscientist? (genuinely curious)

  • I was replying to this little gem of wisdom.

bubb1etea - perhaps not every Borderline is really Borderline. Perhaps psychiatrists are full of shit sometimes.

  • As soon as you hear terms like psychiatry and neurobiology, you know all they will do is label and drug people.

They are in the business of making it biological and genetic. But "Borderline Personality Disorder" and other serious emotional disturbances result from trauma and abuse.

  • i have been told bpd is not an illness ? i dont get it if the brain is not working why is not called an illness?

  • I have BPD and even as a child I would hurt myself, I used to pull my own teeth out and smash my head into floors until I knocked myself out. I have dislocated my ankles and knees to get out of handcuffs, and it's true in my case, my pain tolerance is very high.

  • "strongly reduced pain sensitifity"

...mmmh, is there a study that analyses this on these monchs who are pulling their hands in glowing coal, or on sadhus, some of them do really straaaange and painful things.

i think this reduction of pain sensitifity can be trained!

and this would mean, that the brain is functioning totally healthy, but not "normal". or is it functioning normal, but isn't healthy.....XD

  • he is basing the decreased pain sensitivity on that ALL borderlines cut themsleves which is completely noy true, and even when it is the case it is not on a regular basis therefore would not be able to create an adaptation to the pain.

  • Not necessarily true that cutting or self-harm is on a non-regular basis. Some people self-harm multiple times a day. It is quite rare, but seems to be more common in those with BPD than without. Of course, it depends how you define "regular". Is a few times a day regular? A few times a week/month/year?

  • The pain threshold isn't lower. The pain is not as easy to deal with when you're miserable. It's that simple. If you're feeling good and you encounter a problem it is much easier to deal with. The part of the brain that regulates emotions is damaged by tramua or genetic defects.

  • lower sensitivity to pain most probably ( my theory) is due to the fact that the brain is on overdrive with specific overwhelming emotions.. so deep and intense so much so, that the brain does have "room" to fit this physical pain, because theres so many emotional pains already going on.. i hope that made as much sense as it does in my head.

  • i don't agree

  • I think the thing is that you can't really measure pain on a scale, so if you are experiencing very high pain, the normal pain value is going down compared to that. But a healthy person doesn't experience a mental pain that is as high will experience the same amount of pain much higher, even if they feel the same thing...

  • yeah, patients can be hopefull in Germany or Scandinavia - in Poland it will take ten years more. I'm thinking about therapeutic emigration.

  • what's therapeutic emigration?

  • I knew a borderline who was highly sensitive emotionally and was very aware of the world around her. It's a surprizing finding to me that borderlines would have a lower sensitivity to pain. Thanks for the video!

  • My interpretation of the interview is that individuals with BPD are less sensitive to physical pain, not emotional. From my own experiences I would say that someone with BPD is more sensitive to emotions, particularly "negative" emotions such as pain, depression, shame etc., whereas they are less sensitive than the average person to physical pain, such as a cut or a sprained ankle for example.
