Serious question, and perhaps this is well known, but I have just begun researching your (Swiss) army. How does your army prepare for potential hostilities with no combat experience? Do you bring in trainers from other armies? Thanks!

"To defend your own country is much more "easier" than invading another" is what the Swiss military thinks of course, so Swiss soldiers are trained in fighting and surviving on the Alps, and the strategic points (for example the valleys where tanks and other heavy vehicles can go through) are already engaged by the Military. The Alps are full of weird shit such as nuclear bunkers where 1/3 of the
Swiss population can hide or even jets can take off or missiles can be launched and so much more. That is not only inside the Alps, but even under the lakes. You may think that I watched too many sci-fi movie, but I know well about the country I live in.

I saw two army reform and at the actual status of the swiss armed forced I came on that conclution: army is outdated, unmotivated, no more purpose, too young officers who should never lead and bad general staff! @SubRosaSpear For serving in the swiss army you need to be first of all a Swiss citizen by law and be under 25 years old. For being a swiss citizen you need to live at least 10 years in the country, know at least 1 of our national languages. You must not have any heavy criminal records or other things like that! And even then it will be hard for you to join because the recruitement is usually at the age of 18! Note that the swiss army is not a professional army like in UK. Be proud of your army!

Our laws concerning foreigners are quite restrictive, and you'll have to live almost 10 years in our country before becoming a Swiss citizen. Therefore, you have to know at least one national language (french, german or italian). And joining the Swiss army is an obligation for every Swiss-born citizen, but I don't know the law concerning naturalised people, if they have a military duty or not...

Switzerland was totally surrounded by the Axis Forces (France, Belgium, Italy, Germany and Austria) and yet not overtaken. Ich habe die RS als Panzergrenadier 1996 gemacht. Es kommen viele schöne Erinnerungen hoch. Was wir in 3 Wochen Grundausbildung lernten, dass können Soldaten von anderen Ländern in 3 Monaten nicht. Wir Schweizer haben das im Blut, zumindest die Einheit, in welcher ich war. Geniesst die Zeit in der Armee. Es bleiben nur die schönen Erinnerungen.
vielleicht lebt die schweiz nur deshalb so lange in frieden weil sich keiner den stress im hochgebirge antun will :D

the swiss were reputed to be the best soldiers in europe. during the middle ages we sold ourselves as mercenaries, hence "no silver, no swiss". Even Napoleon had a swiss regiment of troops, calling them "as good as the old guard" his personal bodyguards. the pope had and still has us as his protectors and we have an intricate system of tunnel networks in the mountains. who ever invades, BRING IT!

@Hypastpist Yes, Switzerland would use the own country as a defense fence against the germans. Imagine the infantry in the mountains making such damage to the German army. The Germans would never enter in a war with us. Know why? Because we are neutral, we are a peacefull country. And one thing I can sure you. If any other european country invades Switzerland, as I said, they will find an incredible opposite force defending their own country.

@Hypastpist oh trust me, we aint out of practise. in ww2 the swiss luftwaffe was in combat with the german luftwaffe, one battle included 27 german me-109s vs 15 swiss me-109s, resulting in 4 german and 1 swiss loss.

I don't really imagine our neighbours being scared to death by an army where soldiers are unable to communicate in their national language and prefer english to do so. What's more, our brave soldiers mostly play cards since 9 am. And they're barely sober for lunchtime. What a threat, I can hear our neighbours shiver. And no one attacks its own safe.

@joesoap81 Great Britian is not part per se of the continent of Europe (Eurasia) it is separated by the English Channel. Switzerland was totally surrounded by the Axis Forces (France, Belgium, Italy, Germany and Austria) and yet not overtaken. Credit must be given when it is earned and the people of Switzerland withstood together against the Nazis and that must be recognized.

@Patafanoia From my studies of the Swiss, they'd do well. However, they would need - and they expect - help from other Western states. As the Swiss military attache once pointed out to me, Switzerland is neutral, but it's still a Western country. In the 1980s we counted on the Swiss to anchor one defensive line while the Swedes anchored it in the north.

Btw, Swiss army is really impressive for such a small country, i live now in swiss about a year, and every village, has its own shooting range ^^, every year, who has a gun, MUST go for a few days practice to the shooting range, and a lot of people don't just have pistols, they have real assault rifles

They have the perfect army. They don't get deployed to other parts of the world for nation building, and they are so huge in number that they have enjoyed centuries of nobody fucking with them. Their rifles are pretty much superior to the other crap floating around out there and they are a nation of riflemen, enjoying marksmanship as sport, so many of these guys are good shots, even the young generation. They make Switzerland an unbeatable castle.

@1anaken if i would see Europe as one country, than europe has good tech as well, winning a war is not only about good technical stuff, its also about good strategy, atacking is more difficult than defending so i don't think the Americans can win a war against switzerland. everyone who has served in the swiss army has a kit bag with a rifle at home, so theire ready to fight if its needed
the americans can't even control Afghanistan with all their equipment, and also Iraq is still a big mess.

All communications down, no more electricity at some places, banking system doesn't work anymore, all lights are red on the streets, everything is off. We have almost no counter messures against it! Beside that our army is based on defence inside the country. You can bomb Switzerland from outside the country with the current tech and we won't even be able to counter attack it!

@crosniper1 Nein, sind wir nicht. Ich meinte nur, dass wir in der ganzen Armee ein hohes Level haben im Vergleich zum Ausland. Es gibt viele gute Einheiten in der Armee: Aufklärer, Grenadiere, Fallschirmaufklärer, Panzergrenadiere und was weiss ich noch...

Ich habe die RS als Panzergrenadier 1996 gemacht. Es kommen viele schöne Erinnerungen hoch. Was wir in 3 Wochen Grundausbildung lernten, dass können Soldaten von anderen Ländern in 3 Monaten nicht. Wir Schweizer haben das im Blut, zumindest die Einheit, in welcher ich war. Geniesst die Zeit in der Armee. Es bleiben nur die schönen Erinnerungen.
