@killerkoala79 They are one of the most easy and effective ways to create or especially improvise a solo (rock, hard rock, blues). Root note is used to identify the key of the scale. For example, if the root is A, then the scale will be the A minor pentatonic. Connecting the penta scales together can be done with the musical modes. There are different patterns with the same notes of the Diatonic (main) scale.

I suggest you to use for now the main scale and try to improvise over backing tracks.

Let's say there is a song that starts off with a G chord. Does that mean the song is in the key of G?

And if it is, does that mean you play a G scale trough the whole song or do you switch between scales, like chords?

@Gwuba you need more then one chord to decide the key. but yes you can either use one scale that relates to all or use diiferent scales over each chord

@XIIdmb53IIX Listen to the music and spend some time with the Minor Pentatonic. For example... try a couple of Black Sabbath songs with the A Minor and some Judas Priest in E Minor, sooner or later you'll find a lick that sounds good or from a solo you remember well. The Pentatonic Scales are pretty much universal, just experiment.
