  • you can say stand right up on the mic if your mic is cardiod people don't stand that close especially singers u get proximity effect(bass) witch will be very hard to remove in your mixing process

  • Great tips but sometimes (in my case) you have a powerful voice when rapping that you should stand a couple of inches away... in my case I stand about 10 inches away.

  • actually, you can get that out !

  • THANKS FOR LETTING ME KNOW NOT TO STAND SIX FEET AWAY FROM THE MIC, THATS WHAT IVE BEEN DOING THIS WHOLE TIME WHICH IS WHY I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING RECORDED, I WAS WONDERING. THANKS ( this comment is use of sarcasm)

  • For those watching this misinformation. As an audio engineer of strictly rap for 10+ years...Do not stand as close as you can to the mic...u want to use the proximity effect and back off the mic about a 6 to 8 inches otherwise you will increase the low frequency as you get closer to the mic which you will ultimately remove in the master anyways. Thats why most mics have a bass roll off. There is not much to be gained recording frequencies below 100hz with vocals. StixxBeats

  • thts some good tips

  • I never get that close to the mic unless I'm speaking an intro to the song. And this could have been shorter if he didn't spend all that time trying to make his point about the noises lol.

  • i know a lot of people can agree that it depends on what kind of mic you have, what pattern type you set it to and most of the time u will have to be 3-4 inches away when u are regular rappin and 5-7 inches away when shouting, and its called plosives not words like a p, and those sound do get picked up by the mic the air is what doesn't get picked up by it cmon..expert!

  • no, you don't get THAT close to the microphone...durrr

  • waka flocka dont even stand that close

  • good tips I'm a fuck wit it when I get in da booth....real talk

  • soooo, if you're an expert and all. why aren't you an artist?

  • Standing that close even with a pop filter causes it to sound bassy, you need to use a de-esser and use it the hell out of your track standing that close. 6 inches away at least!

  • Those damn Russian wind sounds...

  • mario chalmers raps?

  • When I record a track, I do have to stand close to the mic cuz if i dont, it doesnt sound loud enough. So I guess it depends on wut type of mic u use. But if u have a condenser mic with a popfilter and everything, ur good to go!

  • Comment removed

  • i laugh to much at these vids.. expert village the new russel peters comedian channel lmao

  • WHEN EVER YOU RAP LIKE YOU SAY WORDS LIKE A P FOR PUSSY!!

  • @98johnnny are u serious? i take it u never recorded in a studio before? he may have exaggerated a little but if anything 2 or 3 inches back is how far your suppose to be

  • @98johnnny Um, Apparently you don't know. You have to stand that close to the mic so that you don't get a lot of reverb. Why don't you do some research before you open your mouth.

Oh, And while you're at it, Learn how to spell.

  • @dshiznets95 sorry dude, ur wrong!

its called a vocal booth! looks like u gotta google "Studio Recording Tactics"

and p.s we both guinea do spelling lessens together!

so how bout u do some research before being a total tool!!!

  • @Kid123Aus I do not have to do research. I'm not an ignorant little kid, I have been producing music for 8 years.

I love when kids think they know everything.

  • plosives

  • if he uses the pop filter then he's not that close to the mic now is he?

  • pop filter

  • great tips man , thanks!

  • you need to be at a hand's distance when u record. I don't know wtf he's talkin bout

  • that pop filter is so high. he's getting pops no matter what

  • I hate it when mike's are uncomfortably low or high... they gotta be at mouth level.

    Cover the Basics first.

  • @98johnnny You* dick* I'm* I* don't* that* fucking* mic*

...dumbass. You type like a 6 year old. I don't understand why you're using that language when your balls haven't even dropped yet. I don't even think you know what it means. But whatever... You can be the next Rebecca Black, 13 and recording pop songs. Good luck with your rap career. I'm sure someone out there is ignorant enough to appreciate your music.

  • @shaneblackie hahah you got to him before i got the chance to...

  • Ay look, its Jay-Z

  • Ay look, its Jay-Z

  • 0:00-2:04 Thats why you ain't got a deal bruh. LOL

  • everything, and i mean EVERYTHING depends on what type of microphone your'e using, what kind of voice you have, the size of the room your'e in, and if you wanna get real deep it could even depend on for exaple what kind of wood your floor is made of. everything is relative, but you wouldn't wanna get to close to the mic if it's a condenser mic though. you'd probably wouldn't even want to speak straight into the mic. everything is relative to the situation. trial and error is key.

  • lol gotta be a average dicks distance dumbshit. 6 inches motherfucker. this guy is dumb

  • lol im enrolled in audio institute of america n yea he is wrong 6 inches is the best way to go

  • @98johnnny yea but you dont know how to spell haha

  • im really gona stand 6 feet away from the mic

  • 6 to 12 inches is how far ur spit screen or pop filter SHOULD BE =) ....rappin engineers remeber it also depends on the mic you use

  • Honestly... it depends on what ur looking for... if ur yelling... stand away from it and the mic will pik up your loud vocals nicely.... but if u want a chilled out sort of vocal and ur not rappping loud... stand close to the mic... but standing tooo close to the mic can cause distortion in ur pop filter everytime u pop into it... though it does not sound bad.... this guy is not wrong.... its just what sort of sound u are looking for :P

  • @98johnnny

I can tell by your spelling... dik? mike?

  • noobvillage

  • Ladies and Gentleman, PLEASE DONT LISTEN TO THIS GUY!!! He is totally wrong... YOU NEVER WANNA GET THAT CLOSE TO A MICROPHONE.

  • i thought you blow job the mic!

  • thought he said some russian wind sounds i was like WHAT LOL

  • wind from P sounds and such are called "Plosives"

  • It really don't matter how far the mic is from your mouth.. "it should be this close" "it has to 6 inches away" NO, that don't matter what so ever!! It all depends on the facts of what kind of voice do you have, how loud are you, what kind of a mic, what is the state of mind you're in!

Here are names and non of them keep the same distance (DMX / Tech N9ne / Ice Cube / Gorilla Zoe)

another thing, studio mics stay a lil farther than Mc mics, so it all depends!

  • Rap this. This Jay-Z look a like is totally wrong. Next year this fool will be getting an award on MTV.

  • Rap this.

  • Starting point: Hand distance

    Deeper point: Close

    Thiner point: Two-Three hand distance

  • lol at the first time that I watched this your face loked like Jay-Z 0_0

  • This is common sense.

  • Amaturevillage! thats wrooooooooooong! Need atleast 6inches between mic and popblocker!

  • WRONG!!!!!!! BUT THE POPFILTER PART IS RIGHT BUT YOU SHOULDNT STAND THAT CLSE TO THE MIC

  • how da hell did i end up right back at expert village

  • how did da hell i end up back at expertvillage

  • I appreciate this dude trying to explain "proper procedures" but he doesn't know what he's talking about. It is important to find the distance that works for your voice. This dude can't even explain plosives right.

  • eey guy please check this song : /watch?v=kjo5Gb9MA2Q please ! and send this song all your Friends

  • WTF

  • lol this video fails

  • Good tips one thing you forgot though... Raise the mic to the right hight level so you don't need to slouch then sall good

p.s i whant ya mic dawgggzzz

  • @pimp1pimc your a fucking idiot dude wtf are u talking about ur supposed to be that close to a mic like that if u have a handhelp mic ur 6 inches away that type of mic is meant to be close up why u think that filter is there to not have muffled sound

  • his wrong about the mic you need atleast 8'' away from the mic

  • @DoctorDragoMusic it doesn't if its rap, singing, or whatever. Its still audio. Distance, enviorment, and the vocalist determine the distance. But not how close he was.. Since your so smart then what is the proximity effect? Once you google that or know the answer then you'll know why vocals don't stand that close to it....

  • What mic is that?

  • Expert Retard. lol hahahaha

  • Stupid azz they say about being close he have a good studio you can be that close. He might have compressor to his mic that dont make it peek when a artist spit.... Good engineers can record any kind of artist..

  • Rap Song Recording Tips : Recording a Rap Song: how to eat a microphone while saying words like p

  • @lilbeatch haha

  • I agree with pimp1pimpc, JPAPERZ, and others, If you see any professional concerts live, you'll most likely never see someone that close to the mic.

  • "lots of times when your recording, you say words with P's in it"

  • u suck

  • u suck!! thanks for waisting 2 minutes of my life

  • @tinycominup learn to spell

  • Lol that is too dern close... what the heck!

  • he wants you t f up your

  • Hahaha....he said "Pee" crappy tips anyway...:(

  • This guy is really one of the worst of all the so called experts from this amateur outfit called "expertvillage".

He talks so much and repeats himself boringly, and ultimately his shaky advice is irrelevant - a bit like all that hot air he talks about.

Go and learn from real experts please.

  • lol this is JAY-Z i think he knows what he's talkin bout jp. i dont want mafuckas on here gettin mad at me as if i dont know this nigga isnt jay-z

  • you don't want to be hunched over the microphone like that

  • he means right next to tha POP FILTER not da microphone

    he's jus stupid

  • he says get one of those things...what is it called tho

  • to have good quality sound in a rap, can you just use a proper mic or do u have to get all the other electronic stuff ?

  • wats a good mic to use im new at this

  • @TheMCMT try to get the samson co1u, pretty inexpensive but amazing quality. I got one at best buy for 100.

  • @ccbcashmoney thanx for the advice bro means alot :) cheers

  • @TheMCMT CAD MIC GXL2200

  • you shouldnt be that close to the microphoone. Through my experience I learned that when youre rapping really close to the mic your voice sounds very monotonous, itll be so clear that you can hear all the spitting and breathing and there wont be any emotion in the vocals You should stand 6 inches (minimum) to 1.5 feet (maximum) and rap as loud as you can to get all the emotion and make the vocal sound clear n crisp. if it isnt loud enough then double or triple the tracks. thumbs up if u agree

  • I got a question. Should my condenser mic be upside down or right side up. I'm a little short anyways to reach the stand straight up, so should I flip the mic?

  • @1996ZBACK It really shouldn't matter which way the XLR plug is facing on a side address condenser mic. What does matter is which way the capsule is facing make sure its pointed right at your source (mouth, guitar, piano etc.) Also know what polar pattern your mic is (hyper-, super-, cardioid, shotgun etc.) so you get the best out of the placement.

  • I keep more distance than that, Thats not a proper micing technique, but I've seen jadakiss, lil wayne, the game, eminem, and vinny paz all record like that.

  • expertvillage isnt so expert anymore

  • Why people hate on this vid. Sometimes you can get a lil close, or just a lil far. Dont hate on him cause he's the one giving the lesson. Not you apparently! So just enjoy and (if he's wrong) you should know by now that you can learn from peoples mistakes! Simple as that.

  • wow what about proximity effect.. this tottally messes up vocal recordings. How is this guy working??

  • Line the fuking letters up!

  • "whooo what's that?" hehe... XD

  • what mic does he have

  • It all depends on the person and the type of mic you have. this guy is giving an example but you never ALWAYS do this u always need to mess around first to get the best quality

  • I was looking at a Shure KSM27 Condenser Mic. Any other Suggestions? I record rap, not to much singing.

  • dope ass mic i got one

  • Is it better to use a condensor mic or dynamic mic for recording rap? which ones would anyone recommend

  • @cologero1989 condenser mic!!!!! Use a dynamic for a show!

  • proximity effect good yeah but there is a thin line between that and distortion. I guess it depend on the type mic you are using . I use a BEYERDYNAMIC MC 834 which is bright as hell so I alway tell my artist to stay atleast 6' away. thats what the pros suggests anyway.

  • Yu need like a shure mic. i hear thats best

  • what type of mic is best for rap / hip hop songs

  • you shouldnt be that close. you need about 3 inches between each, the mic, the filter, and your mouth. it works best like that for me. also, some studios have pop filters made of some type of metal. those look cool but they dont work at all, you should ask if they have another or, like he said.... leave right away to the next studio.

  • i have a metal pop filter and it really works!! it blocks the same way my plastic pop filter does!

  • theres plastic pop filters too? i never seen those. i went to a home studio once where this guy had all this cool expensive @ss equipment and he had a metal pop filter and you could hear all the air every time i said a P, and if I backed up you could hear the echo from the booth. I have that "panty hose" material pop filter and it works perfect.

  • yeah i meant the panty hose one when I said "plastic"

  • He really is not a great instructor for recording techniques. As a recording and mixing engineer it scares me what lack of technique the future of recording is taking on.

  • this guy's videos kinda suck lol

  • I cant get that close when recording because my sensitive condensor mic will catch all the Plosives.. So I have a pop filter close to the mic and I'm basically about 5 inches away with another Popfilter and I get clear vocals.. After some Eq and compression with a touch of reverb I'm ready to ride.

  • This guy knows what he's talking about; clearly he's a professional that records a lot of rappers.

Sometimes you WANT proximity effect, created by close miking -- especially in recording rap vocals (which is what this video is about).

I think close miking + bassy proximity effect is great for most rappers, and most DO spit right up on the mic. For singing, i.e. R&B vocals? Obviously you wouldn't be close miking.

  • wrooooongggg. you never want to be that close. where you get that from. you should be about 6 inches away from mic homie. this guy is soo wrong

  • @pimp1pimpc yoo i was thinking the same thing yo i thought i was going crazy word lol

  • well everyone has they own way. he is just showing how he do. if his mix sounds better then yours stfu and listen.

  • @pimp1pimpc hes not wrong on that, i mean its not suggested, but all you do is turn the preamp down when the artist is close and it makes the quality much betta

  • @pimp1pimpc it depends on how you rap and the mic you've got

  • @pimp1pimpc Very true most vocalists of any type shouldn't damn near eat the mic.

However I wouldn't say never because when you get that close to a cardioid mic you going to start getting what is called "proximity effect" in your vocals. Proximity effect is a boost in the lower frequencies. So, say if you know the vocalists voice is lacking in the low end, moving closer to the mic may make their vocals fuller. But I wouldn't start them out that close.

  • @pimp1pimpc that's right. The pop filter should be about 3 inches from the mic. For me that is about the length of my index finger. so about a finger length apart of the mic the pop filter should be. You should be about three inches from the pop filter which is a total of six inches from the mic. I have a double pop filter and I still have to deal with plosives or clipping( aka distortion) if my program or controls are not configured right. Talking to loud can be problematic also. stay up yall

  • @pimp1pimpc this is recording RAP, not singing, but yeah for for singing, you're right

  • I know from experience that it depends on your voice and how loud or how soft your voice is. If your going to be real loud in the mic, of course you are going to need to be further from the mic than if you wur going to speak softly into it... Come on people, dont you have a thinking tank in your head. Or did you smoke it away!! GMB 863 Florida

  • you're too close homie. go do research...

  • u need to higher the mic to nose level!

  • man you waste my time.I knew that and I'm not a sound engineer or an artist. It's obvious.a 10 year old could figure that one out

  • A good mic will fix the spike in volume levels automatically ....the screen is a spit screen to keep humidity from the mic

  • Dont Listen to this guy cuz he obviously Doesnt know about mic'ing... Its always needed to stand 6 to 8 inches away from the mic to reduce the proximity effect.

Whenever you record to close you'll have perminent bass in your recording that you cant reduce or eliminate. Plus you also have to know if you need the mic lower than their nose or high to give you a certain sound from the artist. More chesty or nasaly. Thats why b4 recording they have something call mic check or rehersal.

  • that and sometimes if you have a strong enough mic you can peek horribly!

  • the pop filter will not stop plosives if you are that close. this guy is wrong .i learned this the hard way. you will have horrible vocal tracks. stay 6 to 8 away

  • I know from experience that it depends on your voice and how loud or how soft your voice are. If your going to be real loud in the mic, of course you are going to need to be further from the mic than if you wur going to speak softly into it... I think you already know this but I'm just making conversation lol

  • @JPAPERZ I'll say about a hands length away from the pop filter

    d-_-b DKS

  • @JPAPERZ this is for RAP, not for singing

  • @JPAPERZ You obviously know what your talkin' about I also thought you turn up the attack some more when rapping or spoken word

  • man! would you believe me if i tell you that i knew you were gonna say 'tornado'! lmao thanx for all your tips. peace

  • ahhhhhh DUHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • OKAY

  • Sometimes you want to get up close and personal with the mic. The closer you are, the more proximity effect, or bass you get. This could sound great on someone that has a high voice. Recording on a mic that is omni-directional or bi-directional can cancel this out as well as stepping back. By the way those pops he's talking about are called plosives.

  • theyre called pops you dumb ass

    not "plosives"

    wtf are plosives?

  • its called plosives dont ask why

  • no they are called plosives lol

wow haha yes they are plosives and any P's or T's or S's make em along with some other loud enunciations. no really. plosives. look it up.

  • thts technical shit

  • ur dumb then cuz this is simpiler thantaking a shit

  • ???

  • i dont have dah pop filter and i nevr Had dar WIND OR AIR SOUND DAT HE TALKING BOUT LMAO it still sounds good wit out ah pop filter

  • i made a pop filter out of a thin black sock and a wire hanger

  • Yeah...

Just a suggestion, go to the beauty supply store and grab a stocking cap, it's thinner. The sock (depending on the thickness) can muzzle your sound.

Simply pull it around tightly, and tie a knot on the end.

  • that works believe it or not XD. good job.

  • Yeah...see my thing above. Just by a stocking cap from the beauty supply store and wrap it around something circular and/or durable.

Those "Ps" can get in there. Not only that, it also helps you with distance. Ex., when you go into a larger studio, you kind of get acclimated to where you are used to stand or the distance. It helps a lot

  • the difficulty level ultimately differs from person to person according to their talent and ability what is easier for some may be harder for others both are equally respectable talents and if a person can demonstrate and combine both then that makes their talent more enjoyable

  • puh puh pussy

    lol ROFLMAO

  • LOL

    ;D

  • ignorant fuck

  • lmfaoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

    lmaooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

yea...alot of rappers do that but i dnt follow them mainstream sell outs. i love listening to underground rappers like Temperamento. He dnt do drugs n stuff...i say that so u see that although thats what its glorified as thats not what it has to be about. u can do rap for anything...just speak ur mind and always have love in ur music cuz if not theres no passion in it. God Bless ya homey =)

  • uh thanx i guess. but i hate all rap in general.

  • oh so ur a singer? it takes alot of talent to sing and hit the right notes not many can do it as elegantly as few can. it must be cool knowing how to sing thats great cuz rap is just basically like talking with or talking in rhythim over a beat. :)

  • no i dont sing but I do know a lot about music and what talent is, and I dont see that in rap. there is no melody that a singer would follow, so its hard to even call it music.

  • i guess alot of ppl think singing and rap is the same lol but its not. Just singing is harder o.o

rapping is like just talking rhymes or going in rhymes with rhythim over a beat while singing is like ppl going on notes, high notes, low notes changing pitches and so much other stuff. I think both can come from the soul tho just depends on an individuals taste.

  • There's no harder or easier! Stop saying this. Im an artist.

Is that what you think rap is???

Think about how many words a rapper has to write, verses you harmonizing your syllables. So ultimately the rapper is writing more. Now think of a TWISTA and breath control. Mystikal and his yelling, etc.

Rhyming words take a lot of time. So don't think it's easier. Not at all.

For someone to tell a story, make it rhyme, and make sense... Yeah right!

  • well read it again homey i was talking abt the actual act of rapping vs. singing.... i wasnt writing abt writting lyrics dude i was commenting on the actual act of opening ur mouth to sing in harmony taking alot of skill vs. rapping just being out spoken words. i didnt bash any genere of music...the lyric process is equally hard for both rappers and singers o.o

  • Let me say this MasergioMusica. Not to debate...but, I knew what you meant...and I can't agree.

There's no school for Hip Hop. There is for voice. Most kids were in the choir in elementary or so.

Now...saying the words is easy. For example. If a comedian says his lines and everyone laughs, and I say the same lines, and no one laughs...why? It's delivery. That's what seps Biggie, Tech9ne, Twista, Wayne, etc from each other. Breathe control. It's way way way harder than it looks. Trust me.

  • fuck off nobody cares about your senseless rambling about shitty so called muscians.

  • Yeah...and let me guess. You're the pressed guy that negatived my statement.

  • dawg writing a rap is very hard. you have to be in rap to know rap and what it takes to rap. i love singing and rapping. it takes alot of skill to rap and be good at it.
