toknfan Thank you for this video I entered a ytube search for Christian Fliegner and this was the first video to come up. Lord Almighty this is stunning.
Wonderful. This is the way it would have been performed in Bach's time. The boy, Christian Fliegner, has a beautiful voice and delivers his interpretation in a stunning way. What a pleasure you brought us here. Thank you.
@TheMrpatyk I just needed to correct one thing you said. The lower wind instruments are oboi da caccia, i.e. "hunting oboes" . They have a curved wooden bodies wrapped in leather, and a brass bells. They were invented by a guy named Eichentopf in Leipzig, and Bach made extensive use of them in his cantatas and passions.
I don't think there is a conductor in such a small ensemble. The oboes suppose to be the basso continuo...I wouldn't blame the composer either - after all he is the genius of all times in music...
I'm certainly not blaming the composer!!! Perhaps there is no-one conducting the ensemble, but it is undoubtable that there was one deciding on the approach to the aria. The oboes make up part of a 'quartet' with the flute and voice. The lack of basso continuo in this aria is symbolic; Jesus not needing the 'support' that humanity does.
I believe in God, Mozart and Beethoven, and likewise their disciples and apostles; - I believe in the Holy Spirit and the truth of the one, indivisible Art; - I believe that this Art proceeds from God, and lives within the hearts of all illumined men; - I believe that he who once has bathed in the sublime delights of this high Art, is consecrate to Her for ever, and never can deny Her; - I believe that through Art all men are saved...
My God! Is this the Leonhardt as conductor? It is isn't? Bart Kuijen is just so good (traverso). Now, what is Phil Collins doing playing oboe da caccia? :-)
The instruments especially the german flute is a little much to loud, perhaps due to false sound mixing. But in spite Christian Fliegner shows that the concept of G. Schmidt-Gaden to entrain each boy in both singing as chorist and soloist carries great harvest in comparision to other boys choirs.
Honestly, I think the instrumental balance is pretty much spot on. The tension between the voice and flute is vital, and the force and movement from the aria is driven by the fantastic harmonic movement, which requires the instrumental lines not to be subordinate.
Oh danke! Gott, was für eine wunderschöne Stimme hatte der kleine Fliegner! rührend, dass er jetzt unterrichtet, was er gelernt hat, dass er sich gegenwärtig um die Jungen im Chor kümmert! Danke, Herr Fliegner!
One of the best -or even the best -Tölzer soloists ever...Of course there are others who became as good as him, but no one was able to sing everything from Opera to Oratorio and recorded as many CD's as him...Probably Allan Bergius did the same amount of recordings...He was the lead soloist of many Harnoncourt productions. Well, a lot of Tölzers are outstanding...Still, I just wanted to honor Fliegner, dedicated too music very early on.
The flautist Barthold Kuijken gives a wonderful performance - as ever.

There are no oboes in this performance! They are krumhorns or cornets. The kid is very good, if a little strident on the higher notes

I like the singing and the flute, but I wish the oboes didn't 'poke' at their notes so. I blame the conductor, rather than the performers though.

Just a matter of taste?
