what i use, unlike most people, is my bow units as a "bufffer" i only bring bow ashigaru, and i found out a way to use them so taht i can beat most bow warrior monks. So when the enemy comes charging, the charge teh bows at the enemy kantanas, negating their charge. Then i charge with the rest of my army, and using the charge bonus and suprior numbers to kill the enemy.

@Amx2ar ignore GrizzlyTramp he is incorrect. Wedge formation is beneficial to cavalry charges that are looking to break through an enemy line and allow them to reach the ground behind it. For example, breaking through a line of yari samarai to attack a generals unit behind them.

@pedalpusher2008 Yes but the enourmous causalties suffered for doing that against veteran yari samurai with a bonus vs calvalry is 33, when you normally just get 2 kills isnt really worth it. You are normally better off in a stardard formation charge against the rear of a unit. Wedge formation is best used to squease through holes in a spear formation.

You've figured out a lot more about guard mode in Shogun than I ever knew. =)

A cool thing about guard mode in RTW: A Roman infantry unit, standing still, in guard mode, can take a head on cav charge from the front, without hardly any losses.

I haven't really tested it on other inf units, it might be partly due to how compact the Roman formation is, or the huge shields.

Maybe someone can test it out in Shogun with a Katana Samurai taking a charge from a Yari Cav? =)

I have, and after further review the guard mode didn't help at all, it was the standing still part that helped.

Cav charging still infantry unit with 103 men goes down to 96.

Cav charging counter charging infantry unit with 103 men goes down to 88.

So, when being charged by cav, it is better to just sit there and take it rather than counter charging. =)

@megawatcher2 Reload +2, Accuracy +2, then your choice of Fire by Rank or Rapid Volley. That's the most basic and reliable of options. Clan skills don't have as great an improvement as the basic, so whatever you do after is sort of personal preference.

Yes, missile units will stay in formation and continue firing, just like they did in Rome. Very useful tip to share. It was also useful for cavalry, say if you were skirmishing and you wanted to be sure units didn't turn around to fight if something caught them, but the effect was neutered in Shogun 2. And wedge is terrible; I only use it for precision (i.e. hitting a stand & fight general) and if I want to make a quick charge then withdraw (deals less damage, but takes very few casualties). (:
