Like said. Good white belt can choke decent blue belt. I'm white belt atm. training for some time. I can handle most of the blue belt on our gym, but there is one white belt who almost dominates all blue belts. He won under 88,3 kg's nationals whitout giving a sigle point to anyone. He somekind of God's wonder :P
I don't know, I'm no expert; but I would think that I would show respect and wear a purple belt if I were to compete in a purple belt bracket. If you're a blue-belt and you enter a purple belt bracket, you''re basically saying that you think you're a purple belt. Even if I were a blue-belt, I would still put on a purple belt. I would take it off as soon as the tournament was over, and wear the blue until my promotion, but would prob wear whatever belt that I was competing in.
to me its more disrespectful to put on a purple belt if you NEVER were given one. Its disrespectful to your competitors, your gym, and the people hosting the tournament. A purple belt is a huge deal, a huge honor, you can't just lie and fake that you have one.
That would be like applying for a job and having a fake masters degree.
@RyanMinaker Like I said: it probobly just depends on your gym/instructor's value-system. I train with Damian Hertz: He's always expressed to us that if we think we're good enough to compete in a higher-belt level, then that means we must think that we're good enough to wear that belt - and he requires us to do that. No two instructors are going to think the same way; that's just what I was told.
I'm a blue and some of my best white belt students can tap me (especially the ones that weigh 40-50 lbs more!) so its not unusual. I think this guy was obviously purple belt level and didn't show as much an overlap in belt levels as a person who was already purple belt level vs purple belts. Great video and congrats!
honestly, belts don't mean anything...when the okinawan's first tried out karate, there were only two belts...white and black. white meaning young and thriving for knowledge, black meaning old and full of knowledge. the color belts were invented later on in order to maintain a sense of accomplishment and a tool of motivation, nothing more. Once in judo, i beat out a purple belt and i was only yellow. that plus, i had more cardio than the other guy.
There's always going to be some overlap in skill at all belt levels. The top blue belts at any given tournament can win against some purple belts. The same can be said at the white belt level on up. Some people have the talent to progress quick at jiu-jitsu and or have very good instructors or train a lot more than others. The color of your belt doesn't define the person.
damn tht man deserves his purple belt, those were some beautiful transitions and amazing counters, he was perfect, he had me cheering after he won tht last fight lol, i laughed cause i jumped outta my seat the same time the croud did lol, congrads man :D

I guess it depends on your gym's value-system. That's just what I was told.

@shamantics lol no its far worse to put on a belt you were never given then just to deside you want to compete against higher level guys

At my school No purple belt is going to have his guard passed by a high Blue belt. That school was handing out purples
yeee941 1 year ago
@yeee941 lol yeah right or your school is handing out blues. A highblue is almost a purple anyways so makes no sence.

There's also a problem promoting guys based on how well they do in tournaments.

KantFadeMe555 2 years ago
@KantFadeMe555 when ppl have the same color gi they give one a diff. color belt for scoring.
foornaa 2 years ago 2
the orange belts are for indentifying the different participants in the events. Such as red for one fighter and orange for the other.
kingb8386 2 years ago
That's just the marker belt for the ref to give points.

A blue belt getting 1st place in a purple belt tournament? Impressive. They should have let him skip purple and go right to being a brown belt. :-)

i would have been quite upset had it said at the end of the video "..he was not promoted to purple belt" hah
